Thanks for this visit to my first duty station, 1977-79. I was an avionics technician in 173rd Aviation Company (Hueys). Later in 205th Transportation Bn. I believe you stuck your head into the basement of my old barracks, Bldg 1324 at 7:10 into the video. Lots of time spent in that basement hallway cleaning weapons after the range. Our barrack was directly across from the PX, Snackbar. Yes, all those buildings gone now. The tall skinny building with the framework on top was the rotating beacon for the airfield. I would ride my bicycle to Pioneer Kaserne to take college courses. Yes, many posts in the Hanau area! Thanks again!❤
Hanau is missing you GI`s a lot! Thanx for those great Times with all of you here in our Hometown Hanau! Remember my first Nike Air from the PX ...gosh i miss this time. God bless you !
I was at Fleigerhorst 80 - 82,, ..Anyone here from that time frame ? i was 63 D Track Mechanic B 2nd 75th F A .. I remember a E5 Staff Sargent Wilson ..Black dude ..
Lived there in 1962'/'63 at 7 years old, had a crush on the sweetest girl named Rita and would be terrified when her mom would send me home, knowing I had to walk home in the dark. Her mom's gentle "What are you, a man or a mouse?" didn't help one bit! We were there for JFK's visit in June of '63 and got to see him, along with Hanau streets lined with German citizens who cheered him to no end. WONDERFUL memories even at that age, of school and football games, tons of snow and soldiers who became my admired role models all through life. Thank you so much for this video.
I was at Fligerhorst from 78 to 80. Best time of my life. C503rd aviation. What great memories, and sadness at the same time. Im old now, my best friend from 2/75 artillery passed away a few months ago. Its been a dream of mine to visit Germany again. We had Heuys and Cobras..
Lived on Fliegerhorst as a kid. Buildings 1415 and 1418. Incredibly wonderful memories. Loved the woods behind housing full of WWII bomb craters (and we were well aware to not go in the craters). Went to a German school in Erlensee before they built the Soortsfield school. Really sad to see that the family housing is all gone. Taking my kids there this summer and wondering if I can remember anything.

1986-1992 Fliegerhorst, Pioneer, Groß Auheim, Babenhausen Kasernes. I was assigned to a Patriot Missile battalion (2/34 ADA). Thanks for the memories and video!
spend many days im Fliegerhorst. As a young Apprentice for a Co. in Hanau we installed curtains and refurbished furniture for the housing and clubs. My first love was stationed here. I am German but my Stepfather was a GI. We lived in Gross-Auheim and Wolfgang.. late 50 yrs till we got stationed in Bad Kssingen Thank you for making this Video...many memories.
I visited in July 2020 and you walked past my building. I went into my building and went upstairs to my room and my mind went back. I was also in that hanger but my hanger was demolished. I was stationed on Fliegerdump from 80-83 173rd Aviation Attack helicopter company 5th Corp. Was UH-1H Huey helicopter crewchief. I recently found my Ole girl (72-21634) in Hampton, Georgia. Sad to see her in her condition but I got to spend time with her again. This is 40 years since I saw her last. Quite emotional 😢.
Our father was stationed at Pioneer Kaserne but way back in the 1960s. I still remember all the fixtures and architecture of the housing. Loved the doorknobs and window openers, handrails and stairwells. It was much newer then. When you were walking downtown first shot, all I could think it how much older and run down the city looked. Kept expecting it to look like it did 60 yrs ago. I learned how to roller skate on steel wheels, adjustable skates on the cobblestone in Hanau and Fulda. Still have my skate key. Thank you for your time and effort to make this video!
Our barracks were on Pioneer and we worked at Grossauhiem. Loved Hanau. I am glad to see Hanau recovering, I am sure it put a hurt on the economy. Nice video ! !
Awesome video. I was there also, from April 2000 to June 2005, but have never been back. Looks totally different. I was a crew chief on the AH-64A, in the 1/501st Alpha Company Assassins. Spent many nights at the International, as it was right across the street and way too convenient for somebody in their young 20’s to have fun. Was in Iraq from April 2003 to June 2004. I spent my last year there at brigade, when the rest of 1/501st went to Fort Hood to get trained on the AH-64D and I knew I wasn’t going to re-enlist. I had an office on the second floor of the building on the right as soon as you entered the main gate, where I set up the cones for the running routes in the morning and took care of the registrations and maintenance of the gardenplatzes on the perimeter of the base. Thanks for sharing, have very fond memories of this place.
Thank you so much for this video! It's a nice childhood memory because I spent my childhood near Fliegerhorst. And I still remember the pioneer Kaserne... =D
Thank you for the walkthrough of everything. I was an MP in the building right across from the I-Club and was stationed there at the same time as you. So many good memories from this kaserne, city, and country. I'm glad the local economy is bouncing back.
Thanks for sharing this. I was just on google earth exploring areas I’ve been. This base was my first duty station. I was in 205th Aviation from 1985-1987. My absolute favorite assignment. Was assigned a second time in Hanau but was on Pioneer Kasern bank in 1991. The post looked nothing like it did back in the 80s but I could get a sense of where you were. Your video was great and I appreciate you filming and sharing.
Wow! What a great video. I was stationed there 1985-1988 with 503rd CAB (31V Commo) and a few years later they changed from Huey's and Cobra's over to Blackhawks and Apache's and became 2/227 Combat Aviation Battalion or maybe Brigade. I remember being assigned to a special detail for 2 months for those of us who had NATO TS clearances where another soldier and I would work in the basement of the HQ's building (or the top of the pyramid in Fliegerhorst Kaserne) and an EAM (Emergency Action Message) rang over the TA-312 and we had to individually decipher the message. Strangely it said to deploy nukes. I was scratching my head thinking "I didn't know we had nukes here." I had the other soldier decipher it and he came up with the same message. About the time we started dialing the post commanders phone number, the TA-312 rang louder than it had ever before. It was for a new message informing us not to act on the last message and that it was supposed to mention "For Training Only." That was crazy! Lots of good memories for a lot of us. I noticed when you walked around the left and or the right side of the pyramid the old fenced off areas that led downstairs to the underground airport was no longer there. Back in 1985, we were told they were flooded to keep everyone out and that they were also boobytrapped. Prior to 1985, quite a few people attempted to dive down there to find German treasures and the last one who returned died right after surfacing saying it was boobytrapped. Interesting story. Thanks for posting this video.
Thanks for the nostalgic tour. I was with the 3rd Armored Division, 122nd Maintenance Battalion from 1973-74. Worked in an electronic repair facility right up against the flight line. I was a Spec 4 in charge of repairing the searchlights that were on the M60 tanks. Memories of taking my 5 ton truck with a mobile repair shop up to Graf for live fire exercises in the deed of winter.
Thank you so much for this video! You did an incredible job narrating and loved that you walked and talked! My husband had a battalion on Fliegerhorst 1989- 1991. 3/20 FA. He took his whole battalion to Desert Storm and the battalion was deactivated after their return from the desert. Amazed at how the city of Hanau has modernized so much! We watched another video of Old and New Argonne and saw our quarters in the duplexes! We returned in about 2005 and couldn’t even get on Fliegerhorst and saw nothing but tumbleweeds. It was very sad. We so enjoyed your video of the improvements and you pointing out what we could not get in to see. Thanks, again!!❤❤❤
Thanks for the memories. But how different it is. Wow. Was there 78-80. Small Air Force unit providing weather support. Lived off-base about a mile in Erlensee.
Thanks for posting this great video. I learned more watching this video than the month I spent at Fliegerhorst. I was with the 42 air transport unit but was transferred to Pioneer Kaserne, HD Q & A Company and served as company armorer there. Time frame 1968 - 69.
I was stationed there 97-98 1st AD 1-501 Aviation Dco shop plt , was on the 3rd floor bldg 1369 , and was an eng mech on Ah64s ..worked in that hangar & was deployed to Bosnia , wild memories..great video !!
Whoa!!!! I was there same time as you!!!!! 127th ASB HSC. You most likely got fuel from me on base!!!! If you heard about the soldier who got into an accident with a fuel truck vs German civilian company car to my shame that was me.
I lived on Fliegerhorst base from 1970-1972 (army brat) when it was still a functioning airfield. We lived in one of the duplex bungaloes bordering german land back by the baseball field. It's barely recognizable now... I think I went to school on Pioneer Kaserne for 6th and 7th grades. Thanks for the video! I think the aircraft back then were mostly Hueys, Cobras, and Mohawks.
@@midwesttraveler2485 Didn't recognize much since the housing area was torn down. The rest of the buildings mostly look alike. We attended the church on base, but it didn't look familiar. There was also a movie theater, but that's probably gone now, too.
Thanks for the tour. I was stationed there 88-90. 3/227th AVN. Lived in Building 1368. Worked in the same hanger you toured. I also worked on base as a civilian 91-93.
Thank for the nostalgic trip. I was actually in the same barracks you were in 1981-82. The second and third floor belonged to the 122d Maintenance Battalion back then and the MP’s had most of the first floor. The I club you showed us was a tennis court and a dirt parking lot. Never knew there were 13 kasernes in Hanau. We used to hang out a lot at lake Erlensee during the summer.
Cool video, thanks! Fliegerhorst was also my first duty station, I arrived in December 1980, extended and stayed till July 84. I was back to Hanau in the summer of 2019 and did catch a bus out to visit Erlansee and Fliegerhorst. Hanau and the area is nothing like it was in the 80's, I'm really happy to have been there back in the day. My unit was 205th AVIUM. Cobra, OH58 and Huey birds. You mentioned Illesheim, my second tour started in Illesheim with 10th AHB. We combinded out helicopters with the tanks of 1/1 CAV 1AD and moved to Ansbach. This was all between 86-89. That tour was not so fun. I did not get back to Ansback when I went to Germany in 2019.
What a great video thank you for walking around every area and sharing the video. was stationed at 8/158th aviation battalion . I worked for Mr Peckham, SFC Barttleson and SSG Harshbarger, we were the best team. Kept the helicopters ready for action. Remember Armando’s Italian restaurant right off Fliegerhorst Kasern.
I was in your building, second floor above your room 84-89 building #1369. 122nd. The community center wasn't there. It was a big parking lot with tennis courts in the middle. It was the best duty station. Very busy with the height of the Cold War going on. Constant helicopters, tanks, trucks, marching. You had to go off post on a Sunday to get peace and quiet. I loved it there and made so many great friends.
Thanks for sharing that!!! '82-'83 ...A Btry 2/75th FA. Also my 1st duty station. I loved it...didn't really know anything else. Three days in country ...put my butt on the back of a truck and of to Graf we went for 27 days. Very fond memories at Fliegerhorst and like anything else in life...some not so fond memories. But I wouldn't change a thing. Retired 1SG after 21years 4 months in Mar 2003.
My father was stationed there. We lived in the apartment buildings in erlinsee (sorry if I misspelled it) on the 12th floor I remember seeing the base from across the freeway and going to sports field elementary school. Playing at the Indian park. '82-86
My ex wife still works in one of those buildings. BOS GMBH, I think they're still there. The are the people responsible for moving soldiers housing. The fact of the matter is the Germans required the U.S. to upgrade, and improve the WWII barracks before we returned them from our leases. And when we were late making the improvements we got fined crazy amounts per day, per incomplete projects. Uncle Sam made those places like brand new. Once we turned them back over, they let them go to shit. They had all sorts of plans, but mostly failed.
I was an an air traffic controller in the 66th Avn Co (62nd attached when they reactivated the 11th AVN BN) 73-75. Our company was the first bldg, on the left as you came in the gate. Too many great memories to mention. Preston W.
Thanks for doing this, I miss Germany so much and would love to revisit. We were at Fliegerhorst from 1985 to 1989 with 4th Aviation Brigade. Col. Guinn, Captain Wojas and for some reason I can’t remember the CMS’s name for any! Getting old sucks!
Nice, Col Guinn had been my Company Commander as a Major on Fiegerhorst, 173rd Avn Co. in 1979. He sent me to flight school. Got to see him again on Fliegerhorst in the late 80’s when I flew in to use the UH-60 simulator as an instructor pilot. I saw his name posted outside so I just walked into his office and introduced myself. Fun times!
@@kentharrington5395 I sure miss those times. I am still in touch with a few people who were there with me. Funny things was, it was like a group of us went from Hood to Hanau, then to Bragg!!
Memories! I live in town close to Hanau. And I remember those days having all the GIs living side by side. And in Autumn lots of maneuvers in the woods here took place. …btw. Colin Powell started his military career in Gelnhausen.
@@midwesttraveler2485 I saw him in an interview on TV. He mentioned strong winters in Fulda, when he and the crew were sitting in an icecold tank. They were suprised when a farmer knocks at their tank serving hot coffee in one of those super cold nights… And in wikipedia there is a sentence or two about this part of his live in GER. …must have been around 62-63
I was there '95-'98 with the 127th ASB part of 1AD. When I was there we ran the on base fuel station. The barracks you mentioned that had the 2 rooms and a shared bathroom was around during my time. In fact I stayed in one before my first Bosnia deployment. In fact my last set of barracks I stayed in was across the street from the mess hall.
Thanks. I was stationed in Gelnhausen~Coleman Kaserne, 2 been. 3AD. from 2/87-90. Great post best Unit I ever served. Blood & Guts!!! 1-48th Inf/4th-18th Inf.
I was there 1963/64, saw Kennedy troop the line the day before he declared himself a pastry in Berlin and when the news of his death reached us. The I club used to be the E club. I crewed UH-1's in the 503rd Aviation Battalion. My barracks was the last on the left looking toward the control tower. Later went to Drake/Edwards
The buildings on the left at 6:10 were originally the aviation unit barracks until they finished the new barracks which you pointed out as you entered the base. When the new barracks were finished the aviation unit moved into them and we (2/75th FA, later redesignated 1/32nd FA) took over those barracks so that we could spread out.
@@midwesttraveler2485 happy to be of help. I was stationed at Fliegerhorst from 1988 to 1990. I met a lot of good people and had some good times there. When I was there the post club was called the Modernaire club, not the International and if we walked down the road into town there was a GREAT little place to eat called Pepe's, the best tortellini that I have ever had, and his (as I understand it) authentic Italian version of pizza was exceptional. Sad to see the condition that everything is in now but I guess that nothing lasts forever and you can never go home.
Was there two years 76/78 lived in Erlensee Thanks for the video I was 16 my husband was 18 he was in the army. From Missouri . I worked in the px. Memories
Underwood lol is where I was stationed but worked at fleig. First got to Hanau everything was open all the kaserns. When I Was getting out in 08 there was nothing left really. I was I think the Last family to live at gelnhousen. I was forced to live on the economy, which was awesome Three-story house And I can see budigen castle from my third floor. They closed half of the commissary while I was there, so I saw the best of Hanau But quickly became a ghost town. I remember all you could eat on Thursdays at Chi Chi’s. I am going back this summer and can’t wait. I still have a lot of family that lives over there and friends I served with that retired there.
Oh thank you! I was there in the 85-87. Back then it was the 3rd AD. I was in the 503rd (which changed form Company to BN to BDE while I was there). We still had hueys, cobras, and 58s when i got there, just getting blackhawks. I was in commo, we had a basement shop and a vault from when the Germans were there in WWII where we stored our comsec. I loved the flight line snack bar 😂! Soon after my 1st run on perimeter rd I learned we had hawk missiles, and why we had protesters. After a break in service my career is coming to an end, and I really appreciate this post. Thanks lil bro! ❤
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I like hearing all the stories from people who were posted there throughout the years. It has definitely left some fond memories in the lives of many people. Good luck with the rest of your career.
I was there from 89-91 F TAb 333, my barracks were across the street from the Modernaire Club. Every morning we would go through and police up the grounds.
It was 3d Armored Division when I was there in the 80s. Pioneer had the PX and Commissary back then. There were Air Force personnel there too, I was in the AF as a weather forecaster.
I was station here in 1957 /1958/ 59 In a 8 inch howitzer BN If i remember correctly it was the 75th FA BN Great time in my life Roy Hammock age 85yrs old
Wow brings back old memories. Funny you mentioned Fliegeldump as your first duty station, Budingen was my first. I was a 15J with F Trp, 1/1 Cav at Budingen from 2004-05. Used to make trips to Fliegerhorst to pick up parts for the helicopter we worked on. The dry cleaner/insurance place you talked about at the front gate also had a used car lot if I remember right was part of the same business. Us aircav guys deactivated in May of 2005, 15J/S’s got sent back state side wile the rest went to fliegeldump and boy were they mad. The tankers and scouts stayed for a few months more while the rest of the base shutdown. I know the town was sad to see use leave since their economy took a major hit afterwards. I go on google maps every once and a while to look things over, for most parts everything is still there. Airfield has been leveled, but you can still see the outline of the runway.
That's awesome. I just wish I had taken my drone with me. I sent back in 2006 when I got stationed at Illesheim. They were using Pioneer as the replacement center after Rhein Main and the USO in the airport closed. I just wished that I had spent more time there, but the deployment and deactivation had other plans for me.
1982 3/59 ADA, then we moved the company down to no-nookie Neubrücke. Came back in 85 and assigned to me old building again, but it then was 503CAB. I was so sad Peppi had left his restaurant in Erlensee to someone who served me some stuff that tasted like it was out of a CAN!
Wolfgang Kaserne had the new PX/Commissary but also housed the freezers for the food that went out to the Kasernes and the Brigade maintenance where major refurbishing/repairs for vehicles and etcetera were made. Yorkoff Kaserne (across and up a side street from Hutier Kaserne) was headquarters to the Commanding General, the staff, and operations.
Stationed there 65-66 with the 4th Trans, CH 37B company before they moved us down south. They were telling the underground hangar story back then. Amazing how those stories lived on.
I was in B Co 205th trans Bn. Cobra Armament, 1976-79. we were in the 3 story barracks, from the movie theater and small snack shack, look to the left... the theater/snack shack burnt down several years ago.
was stationed at pioneer kaserne in hanau germany back in mis 80s best time of my life they goin green and refurbishing alot of the old barracks mine are still up i think appartments they makn them
1981 to 1983 July. HHC 503 CAB. then transfer to B Company in Budingen. There was happy times and other field stuff that almost cooked my bacon. Enjoyed my service time there.
Are you kidding me. Love you dude. '87 - '89 long lost (lance) Battery. Thank you Bro wish I had the sense to learn the language as yourself. Some people say "I don't want any do overs in life." This is where most of mine lie. 3:21 is the back or side entrance to HHC 1/32 FA (lance) dude I will buy you a beer or coffee anytime!
Ha ha. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. My only regret is that I didn't have my drone with me. I would have liked to get some aerial footage while I was there.
I spent many a day on Pioneer as well. I was transitioning back to Illesheim from the states in 2006, and it was being used as the replacement company since the USO closed down in the airport. I showed up and signed in on Friday, the E4 told me that we weren't allowed to leave base. I told her that I had already rented a car for the weekend. She said that was impossible without a USAREUR driver's license. I showed her my license and said I had just left Hanau 11 months before.
@@midwesttraveler2485 Man! we were there about the same time. thanks for bringing back memories. the couple times i went on Fliegerhorst we ate at a Chinese imbiss close to it.

thanks for sharing Midwest Traveler, my Ma works 1950 in the "Deutsche Kantine" in Fliegerhorst and i am 64 now. Cant forget the facilities were ive been in as german Telekom worker, for me it was a new world within my world. My grandma rented allways a apartment for gi.s. Now i miss you americans so much, that time was cultural enrichment for me. Here in and around Hanau we had 35 000 soldiers and AFN, damn good times...
Thank you for sharing. I can't imagine the changes you must have seen to the area through the years. Also thank you for posting the number of troops there. I looked but couldn't find it. So much information on the area has already been erased from the military websites. It's almost like it never existed.

Im from the UK and born in 79 so have nothing to do with this; but being from a military family and having lived in Germany many years on and off I really enjoyed this video. Its shame it all went to crap after so much effort was put in. Feel sorry for you all and General Sadler. Its really a shame. Should be kept as a museum, but like you say money talks.....thats really a shame.
Thank you for watching and commenting. The US has military bases in UK and I've visited the Churchill war rooms and British military museum in London. I have also been in a naval exercise in Scotland. So, it seems that we are not that far apart after all.
@@josephweaver5385 Bullshit! That's just a fact! American families lived in our house in the 80s and 90s. We have always had friendly relations with them. I don't like the American government! But that has nothing to do with the population.

Wow! That is awesome. Congrats on the reunion 😁
That's great! Thanks for the memories and for watching.
I was down range with you. I was in C Co. I'm still in contact with some Assassins from back then.
When I was there in 94 the Community center was the Modernaire Club. Spent a lot time partying in that building
Great look back- I was there from 2/77 to 6/79 and it was such a great place for first posting. Very fond memories. Thanks for pointing!
Thank you so much for this video! It's a nice childhood memory because I spent my childhood near Fliegerhorst. And I still remember the pioneer Kaserne... =D
Thank you for watching?
Thank you for the walkthrough of everything. I was an MP in the building right across from the I-Club and was stationed there at the same time as you. So many good memories from this kaserne, city, and country. I'm glad the local economy is bouncing back.
Yes, agreed; they were good times
gibbydat! Smitty here! Love it when people put video's up like this! Hope all is well with you!
Thanks for posting this. I was stationed there in the late 90’s and made lifelong friend there.
It was bittersweet seeing it all again. Thanks for watching.
My Dad was stationed same time there
I was in the area from 98-01. Lived on Pioneer and worked on Grossauhiem. It is good to see the are flourish after our departure.
In 73 I was -1 😂🤣
Steve , Did you happen to know Boyd " Kid " Needham from 30th Trans.??
66 Aviation Company first barracks on the left as you came in the gate. 70 /71. Worked in the control tower at the airfield.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I just wish I had my drone with me when I was filming.
Glad you enjoyed it
I was stationed there 97-98 1st AD 1-501 Aviation Dco shop plt , was on the 3rd floor bldg 1369 , and was an eng mech on Ah64s ..worked in that hangar & was deployed to Bosnia , wild memories..great video !!

That's awesome. Did you recognize any of it from the video?
@@midwesttraveler2485 Didn't recognize much since the housing area was torn down. The rest of the buildings mostly look alike. We attended the church on base, but it didn't look familiar. There was also a movie theater, but that's probably gone now, too.
I jumped out of one of those window after a fun night at Fliegerhorst. I lived on Pioneer and worked on Großauheim.
I too lived in Pioneer and worked at Grossauheim, 19th Maint Co, 8th Maint Bn. DS/GS rebuild facility.
Thanks for the tour. I was stationed there 88-90. 3/227th AVN. Lived in Building 1368. Worked in the same hanger you toured. I also worked on base as a civilian 91-93.
I was also in 1368 2nd floor 66-67 with 2/73 arty.
Did you know Steve Rule?
I was also there from 88 to 90 with the 2/75th FA.
@@strivingforheaven I was in C 3/20th from 89-91. I'm surprised I don't recognize your name.
The 122nd Maintenance Battalion was part of the 3rd Armor Division.
Thank you for watching
I was there in 1954 with the engineer supply control unit

I worked
for Mr Peckham, SFC Barttleson and SSG Harshbarger, we were the best team.
Thanks for showing this! Was there from 94-98 in 2/227th and 127th…….. Good times.
I'm happy you enjoyed it
I was in A battery second of the 75th in 72 and 3 w0w man what a great memory

Thanks for the tour. I was with the 3rd Armored Division, 122nd Maintenance Battalion from 1976-79.
Awesome video, I was stationed there in 77-78 Believe it or not good memories.
Thanks for the tour. I worked on Pioneer Kaserne at the library 95-96. I want to return one day.
Many 70's buildings were contaminated with PCB

Thanks for the great video. Stationed there from 73till75, I went back 3yrs ago got as far as that front gate but couldnt get in.
Thanks for the info. I can't keep track of all the units that moved through there. ha ha
@@midwesttraveler2485 happy to be of help. I was stationed at Fliegerhorst from 1988 to 1990. I met a lot of good people and had some good times there.

Loved the 25 cent drinks and 17 cent packs of smokes even our C-RATS. They treated all like men back then. God bless us all.
Bco 122nd maint bn , 79-81 sure looks different
We never called it fliegerdump in the 1970's A beautiful duty station for any body who served in the Army in Europe!
