This was once an ideal and very well kept military installation in Europe ♥ --I was there 88-92... Sportsfield Housing, husband was stationed Fliegerhorst and later reassigned to Pioneer Kaserne. I worked on Pioneer K at ACS, I loved it! This place was the best! Great opportunity for me and my family to have enjoyed being sationed, touring and traveling throughout Europe. Thank you for this!

This is very hard for me to watch because, I remember how beautiful we kept it and all the time and money spent on projects around the Post. I was a engineer assigned to DPW... oh look, I just saw the Flood Zone... I'm crying now.

I felt the same as you do about it when I looked at it. As an MP I was proud to serve there. I did'nt know it then but my eighteen months serving there would be the best thing I ever did. May God always remember those who served at Pioneer Kaserne.

I was stationed on Pioneer (19th Maintenance Co, 8th Maintenance Battalion from 1983 - 1986 and again in 1/1990 - 10/1991. Latter tour in Hanau, was shorter as with my second tour I was with a Hawk Maintenance unit that had deactivated and I had to finish the remainder of my tour elsewhere in Germany. I chose to return to Hanau (loved it that much). I lived in bldg. 9 and worked on Grossauheim. Party a lot at the Village (downtown Hanau) as well as in Sachsenhausen, Frankfurt. My memories of Hanau and Pioneer Kaserne were some of the best of my life. Met some great people who I'm still friends with since I separated from the Army. I'm really sad at seeing what it is today. The good times I had will always remain with me.

I was stationed about the pioneer concern in Hannah Germany and worked on grosselheim myself. I was there from 85 to 87. And was in a maintenance company myself. My wife and I went back there when my son got back from his third tour from Afghanistan in about 2012? It was kind of gut-wrenching to see, such a nice post turn into a wasteland.

My dad, as a U.S. Army Master Sgt., was stationed at Pioneer Kaserne, 1955-1958, and we lived in Cardwellstrasse housing - down the road. I have good memories of riding my bike to a very well-maintained Pioneer Kaserne. It was beautiful then, and I will always appreciate having had that experience as a child. My husband and I visited the area in 2016. Clearly, it hasn't been well cared for, but it's the German's now, and I hope they find a good use for it.

Stationed there and miss the bahnhof that was a short distance away. Great bier and lots of good times to be had. Looks like one of America's inner cities now. A couple times year Ray Charles would show up for a show in the EM club. Many good memories but sad seeing what has become of it.

Very Depressing to see the sad shape of Pioneer Kasserne.... I was there in 1967 - Jan. 68 before transferring (took a "short" for three) to VN. I was with the 97th Qtr masters - hauling jet fuel, Av Gas, Diesel & automotive gas for the EES service stations all over Germany. Really breaks my heart to see how run down and over-grown with weeds, shrubbery, etc, etc.... was beautiful back in the 1960s... but had to be Very Careful where you went off - post.... there was still a LOT of anger and hostilities towards Americans at that time, even though the war had been over for 22 years when I arrived in Hanau.... but still had great memories from there, and trucked all over the country (well.. the western half, anyway) hauling various fuels to all the different bases and airfields.

Behind our two story red brick barracks (507th. HEM Co.) there was a little block building, run by a German, called The Sugar Shack. After our work day in that German railroad repair shop, across the street we guys would go to it for refreshments, beer and a variety of hard stuff. 1967. Yep. sp-4 Irving Parker.

568 Engineer Co (CSE) Second building to the right of the main gate. The 814th bridging Co. was on the North end, we were on the South end of the building. We worked hard and trained hard. Arrived in March 1984. Three weeks later we headed to Grafenvohr to work on range 79. Combine arm live fire range. TDY 9 month. PCS August 1985. I was a 62F Lifting and Loading Equipment operator. But was assigned a motor grader. Going to the 75 anniversary of D Day this June. Tour raps up in Frankfurt. I'm having second thoughts about going to Pioneer now. I guess Tony's is long gone. we spent a lot of Deutschmarks there.

Stationed there 1971-1972, Building 7, 814th engr, floating bridge. Didn't do a lot in downtown hanau, except for the swimbad.
Preferred to spend time with G.I. and german friends at a guest house in nearby Niederrodenbach. Kaserne life could be boring at times, but did enjoy the movie theater, the "Evening Star".
EM club was just across the cobble stone street, and had good meals to go. Had friends with cars, so a lot of weekends were spent on the road.
Use to think about the pounding Hanau got in the latter part of ww2, seeing the dozens of craters from British bombings, behind our motor pool.
Bitter/Sweet would be the outcome of the end of the Cold War, Can't imagine the income loss to Hanau, with the Kaserne's closing.
Very sad to see video clips of whats left.
    Pioneer Kaserne, RIP !!!!!!!!!!

Stationed with 559th Engr Bn (Whatever the Job!). (516th, 567th, 568th, and 814th companies) from 83-85. Some great memories with the composite battalion HQ. Got to participate in several community theater productions (Hello Dolly, Diary of Anne Frank, Play it Again Sam, King and I, others) at Old Argonner Kaserne. I remember the night the 814th placed floating ribbon bridge pieces to block access to the family housing/BOQ area due to Red Army Faction terrorist activities. The 559th HQ (small detachment) was across the street from the 130th Bde. HQ. Cold war was still on, and the Engineer battalion supported the 3rd Armoured Division throughout. Remember one exercise on the border by the Fulda gap with US having empty weapons and the Russians/East Germans only a few hundred yards away locked and loaded. So many great fests, German friends, historic sites to visit, etc. I miss Germany (protestors in the spring and all). Mark Keegan--probably saw you at Tony's--great place--loved the Weitzen Bier. Shovel Junk-I remember the work the 568th did at Grafenwehr--those huge graders made the earth shake 2 miles away. I was the Bn Signal Officer (83-85). Bn Cdr. Billy J. Ricks was the best, and Maj. Mike Taylor (Bn. S-4) was awesome. Best change of command ever was when the 814th constructed a floating ribbon bridge crossing, the outgoing commander marched the company out the the center of the bridge, the new commander came in by boat, and they exchanged the guidon. Then the old commander got on the boat heading up stream never to be seen again. (Actually I ran into him later and he was doing fine.) During one summer exercise, I remember escorting an Engineer officer from a Michigan unit around the area and we stopped to check on one of my retransmission sites located near a ski resort. The ski resort had a metal slide run down the hill, and I remember going down the ride in full field combat outfit with weapon, gas mask, and camos. Gotta go back just for the fun of it.

    • @johnbarton7516
      @johnbarton7516 Год назад +1

The mess was just across the street and up a half block or so from the MP barracks where was bivouacked. There was usually a long line as you can guess. MPs were on duty during meals so could cut the line and go directly in. This was not a popular prectice. So a few epithets were dished out by some in line outside. All in good fun to be sure. Breakfast was excellent with eggs made to order pancakes cereal fresh fruit and my favorite shi..I mean chipped beef on toast...with pancake syrup. On the way out Turkish dishwashers cheerfully greeted you and took your trays. You could probably hear me yelling back once outside.."Short.". God Bless one and all.

Why are they conducting tours of closed down kasernes? Yes they were occupied by the USA military and I spent 2 1/2 years there. We paid the German government rent and also paid for the maintenance and updating of their WWII facilities. Private German run companies did the work our government paid for. My experience in Europe was amazing including travel opportunities. It sure beat having to go to Vietnam.

I was there in 1964 to 65. For me it was a real hellhole. Not so much because of Pioneer Kaserne but they way you were treated by lifers. Most army bases were bad. You have to give the army its due, they were the world's best at selecting real pits to build bases on. I hope the army has changed since those days because back then there was a very high percentage of people getting out with undesirable discharges who gladly took that over spending years in that place. Very low moral and my time was much like a prison sentence.

I got out early for two reasons, I wrote this letter addressed Dear Sir as its starting point that explained how the only way to be free in this country was the feel of capital in your hand and the right drug.in the other. It was a lark, a spontaneous paper I wrote to myself on a day I was feeling lonely and never intended for anyone to see it. The other reason was I almost od'ed on China White heroin and had to be talked down by my Platoon Leader who then sent me to the showers and told me not to even get dressed tomorrow. A gay tropper friend who had a crush on me came to my room to check on me, he read the letter I wrote and asked me if I wanted him to give it to the 2nd lieutenant who talked me down the night before. I said sure not really thinking. About 4 hours later I was told to get dressed and report to my Company Commander. Got dressed, got to the Captain's outer office and when they opened the door every officer and enlisted man all the way up to the Command Sargent Major were standing there. I think I shit my pants about then. I walked in to the actual Captains office and he held up my letter and asked me if this was how I felt, and I said yes. He told me he knew of my overdose and because off these 2 reasons they were giving me a General Discharge, a drug and alcohol discharge and I'd be out in 30 days just sign here. Just before I did sign something hit me, I thought that after serving my tour honorably up till now there was no way I was going to go through the rest of my life with that hanging over my head. He sent me back to my room, an hour later I got called back down a second time. He told me that he talked to the Brigadier General our Post Commander and he said to offer me a Unable to Adjust to Military Life discharge, which was an Honorable Discharge with one stipulation, I could not reenlist for the next two tears. With out blinking an eye I signed it, he shook my hand and said good luck. In less than 30 days I was back home after processing out at Fort Dix N.J. So all in a span of 23 hours I went from living a good life at the beautiful Pioneer Kasen to coming to a place I felt like a stranger, I felt like I left my home behind. I got over that in a few days. I'm not proud of what I did, but my only regrets I have is ;leaving my friends and honour behind.
