Responding to God's Call with Faith and Courage
The readings for the 15th Sunday in Ordinary time year B, invite us to reflect on the nature of God's call and our response to it. Each of these readings underscores the importance of recognizing and faithfully responding to God's call.
In the first reading, we hear the prophet Amos being confronted by Amaziah, the priest of Bethel. Amaziah tells Amos to go back to Judah and prophesy there, suggesting that his words are unwelcome and disruptive. Amos responds with humility and clarity about his divine mission: "I was no prophet, nor a prophet's son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore trees, and the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'" Amos's response highlights the often surprising and humble origins of those God calls, and it emphasizes that it is God's initiative and not human ambition that leads one to a prophetic mission.
