DIY: $1 AUX Stereo Input Hack

- Here's how to tap into your car's stereo and add an auxiliary input to connect your phone or MP3 player. This mod will only cost $1 for the cable.

A 3.5mm auxiliary input jack or plug will allow any device player to stream sound through your vehicle's stock sound system.
This video details the disassembly of the radio down to the motherboard. Extension wires are then soldered to the three possible inputs that can be tapped into - CD player, Cassette player and AM/FM radio tuner. All three of these inputs are clearly labeled on the bottom of the board as "L" "R" and "GND" for left, right and ground connections to the 3.5mm plug.
This hack will work on most stereos that use an analog audio input to the equalizer chip. In some cases, it is necessary to use a silent CD or cassette to trick the radio into reading sound from that respective input. For the best sound quality, a silent CD with the AUX connected to the analog CD lines is preferred, though modern radios use a digital CD signal which won't work.
The three methods are then tested in the vehicle after the radio is put back together and proved to work. The analog input of the phone/music player overrides the sound coming through the CD, radio or cassette. Some phones that feature headphone detection may not detect the cassette player due to the impedance.
This video was demonstrated on an Infiniti G35 with an OEM stock head unit with navigation.

The problem with the phone volume all the way up is it will inject distortion from the output circuitry on the phone.
The best volume level on a phone is about 80% where it will be below clipping levels but still above levels where any loudness circuitry will be overridden.
Good tip, it depends how sensitive you are to distortion and what you listen to as well, most aux hacks I have done I usually feed the highest phone volume and then control the final output from the cars stereon

Brilliant ! a fantastic guide thank you for making this excellent video and posting it for us. I knew there had to have been someone who had added an Aux input to an old cassette radio head unit . This is the perfect solution to enable classic car owners to retain their OEM head units and add music from a phone or tablet .

This was my 1st and only mód to my old Mazda 6 which i bought 2 years Ago , after i burnt a bluetooth device with 16 pin conector to my radio homemade by some german guy selling IT on ebay by messing Up the wires (IT cost 30 Euros) i found a manual how to do this on old Mazda forum from 2004 , IT took 3 days, lots od cursing, 2 failed attempts, as i have never ever done anything with electric wiring or soldering, ale after i rebuilt the radio i was left with 10 screws , but it works after 2 years and i never gave Up, i Can finally say i have done something as good as speedkar99 did, car related :D (i didnt know anything about cars back then and now after All problems my old Mazda has encounterd through out that time i learned a lot, but your YT channel explains almost everything in the best and most simple ways car newbie like me could imagine)

It would be good to route your internal CD input wires to a female 3.5mm jack, so you can use (and replace easily, if need be) a cheap and widely available 3.5 mm male-to-3.5 mm male patch cord. You can crib a jack from anything, and maybe secure it with epoxy or even silly-cone.

Big thanks for the video! I have a 2006 G35 Coupe, so mine was a lil different. Plus IDK ANYTHING about electrical work, so small learning curve but ultimately I had to tap into the RCH-OUT and LCH-OUT then GROUND. Works great.

@@speedkar99 2003 CRV. The only thing is that I have to turn off the radio before plugging in the aux into the phone, similar to what you did in this video. With the aux hooked into the Bluetooth adapter, the audio is very low and staticky so I don't use that adapter. Still cool mod and it's all thanks to your videos. Keep them up!!

This worked like a charm on my 2005 Pathfinder. I used the fm modulator inputs and it works great! I had purchased an after market iSimple bypass and it sounded terrible. Thank you so much!

-Pro tip: The G35 clock bezels pull straight out, rather than upward. It's pretty easy to break the tabs off removing them.-

Unrelated: I sell those bezels on ebay to people who break a tab for around C$100, shipped anywhere in N. America. ;-)

@@speedkar99 Yes, but it's best to pop from the top! If you look at the bezel, you'll find the tabs aligned longitudinally. Best way I've found is fingertips @ bottom of display and *_pull!_*

*MOST IMPORTANTLY! Get a cable with a SLIM connector. If your phone is in a case, a lot of these standard connectors won't fit with the case on!*
I would also recommend you get a cable that costs more than a dollar. A $5 cable from monoprice will have altogether better components, and it's worth it because this is not something you just want to redo when your cable shorts or gets crackly from age or weather.
One dollar only goes to the part(s), plus the labor is probably 80Cdn per hour multiply by 8 IF everything goes right, final total comes to a hefty $641! 80 dollars per hour is what any auto mechanic would charge these days and probably even more.
For me, I have often fancied buying a home-use soundbar and a subwoofer with bluetooth connectivity and just let it sit at the rear shelf, plus an inverter to power it. Now that is bang for the buck!
Nevertheless, have always enjoyed your videos dear speedkar99, it is quite amazing considering that you don't need to refer to the factory schematics.

A mechanic wouldn't touch this stuff, and frankly, most are unqualified. 120V home stereo stuff in the car seems like a good idea...until you get mad interference from your alternator through the inverter!

@speedkar99 Love your videos! I've seen a few now and I can really appreciate your expertise and how clearly you explain how to DIY some rad stuff! These yahoos putting you down for how complicated this would be have no idea what they're talking about. They think they can just buy a can of Fix-Me spray and apply as directed and all there problems will go away. If they would just put in a few hours of learning how to solder and actually apply themselves almost anyone could do this. You've done all the hard, time consuming stuff for us so we can just follow your instruction. Once again, thank you for these videos!
I'm sure it was fun but no way I'm doing all that. I had a company car many years ago that I could not mess with. I ended up buying a RF transmitter and a MP3 player. The RF transmitter needed batteries so I took a phone charger and did some dodgy connections to use that instead.
I will admit the quality was not the best but not a single screw or trim was harmed in the process.

I've tried soldering to 3 different pairs of Left and Right (plus ground) on the motherboard and nothing worked. In one instance the audio still came from my phone, in the other two times no audio played anywhere. This was with a 2002 civic's radio. Oh well. I had my hopes up for a cheap fix. Guess I'll have to buy a bright glowing head unit so I can use an aux cable. At least it was fun trying.

Subscribed. Interested in doing this, I’ve done it before by disconnecting the tape deck output and soldering a 3.5mm wire onto the input pins. I have a 2005 g35 with a different audio package, it has a cd changer but no tape deck so I will have to connect to changer or radio. Do you notice any interference from the input from the existing connections? How does it just override the CD/tape/radio? Also do you have to remove the gauge cluster to do this or did you that for another reason?
I didn't have any interference issues. Make sure you use a blank CD. The cluster was removed as part of a future video (maybe)
My 2005 G35 CD mechanism not functioning properly I can't use blank CD , so my only option is to use radio input?
5:55 I'm curious why you inserted the RCA cassette to 3.5mm adapter for silence when testing the cassette leads, why not just use the 3.5mm off the cassette as your aux and save the laborious task of taking everything apart.
From my experiences with foreign cars that include combo cassette/CD players is that they are the most future proof but I haven't found a cassette to 3.5mm adapter worth bragging about. Can you recommend the blank CD aux input method as having better quality than any cassette adapter that can be purchased?

Why does the CD hookup have better sound quality than the radio hookup? I would prefer to use the radio hookup to avoid having to keep a CD on hand to activate that input if it could be made to sound as good.
I tried to do that, checked the motherboard but i found no labels indicating right, left or ground .
Any advise ?

You'd have to start looking at the radio lines for inputs.
Or get the datasheet for the main chip

If you Google 3.5mm jack pinout you can use the continuity tester on your multimeter to find out which wires belong to left, right and ground.

Finally; a useful thing that can actually be of use as battery powered wireless surround speakers or what not and solar charging could be an option also but it is cool for free amps that could serve as tri-amps also maybe. Or whatever; hey bud; maybe show how to use them as cassette head adapted for guitar input and so on. But you all know that what would really be cool; would be a junction that would be added to the fm antenna coax and ............... well that made as much sense as something that made no sense. LOL There are cassettes that have a head that sits upon the cassette deck head and the motor could be disconnected to get rid of the disturbance and that could work also.

I feel like with all the work this takes an fm transmitter or better yet and FM modulator would pay for it self, be a safer option and not near as hard or complicated for the average person to install. Awesome fucking hack though bro!!
So followed the whole video, everything works(amazing video btw). When I put a cd in it plays my phones music. The problem is when I try a blank cd so there is no background noise, my radio says “Error” and ejects the cd. Does this mean I’m stuck with music cd’s or is there anyway to get the blank cd’s to work? Is it just the type of radio I have?

So I was hoping you could help me with something. I have an 06 Solara with an android head unit installed. I found a 4 wire aux port from an 07 solara at the junkyard and wanted to wire that into the aux input for the head unit. I bought an rca male to aux male adapter to connect to the red and white aux inputs on the head unit. I had used a continuity test on my multimeter to determine the ground left and right of my aux port. There are four wires, but the fourth one ended up not being connected to anything so I just left it disconnected. I soldered the three wires ground left and right to the aux side of the aux to rca adapter respectively. I plugged it in and opened the AVIN app on the head unit, but whenever I connect the aux to my phone, the phone acts like nothing is connected and the head unit plays a repeated thumping noise. No phone audio in the head unit. Any advice? I appreciate it.
Is that rca port meant for aux in or out?

@@speedkar99 Yes the ports are made specifically for that. The red and white are labeled aux in L and aux in R and the manufacturer eonon specifically mentions the use of the rca to aux converter I got will allow 3.5 aux capability. I dont believe I have a phone that doesnt have jack detection though. Any other common devices that dont have jack detection?
I figured out why it wasn't working. I ended up believing I wired it incorrectly or that the port wasn't compatible with my radio, so I bought a 3.5mm female to rca male adapter and plugged that in, and I got the same noise. I then tried it with a different phone and it played with no issue. I then plugged my phone into a Tundra with a stock aux port and it still made the same noise. Trying it with a different phone worked, so my phone is the issue. The previous owner totaled my phone and it was restored, so I guess my phone's aux port was one thing that was not repaired. Thanks for your help.
Why to go through all this if I have a cassette player ??? I can get a cassette adapter for less than $10 including the cable. In addition, what's the make and model of the car?
Quality isn't as good and the cassette resets sometimes
Cassette quality is horrible compared to a hard connection
For the cassette trick: You need to buy a cassete and remove the tape. Than just plug the phone in, put the cassette in the player and the music starts.
I've a audi a4 b6 I have a connects 2 module. that allows a Sony cd changer to be connected and played through the rca leads. However I have a jack plug with rca connections on the end that I've connected these to the connects2 rca outputs and then plugged the jack into my phone. if I put a cd into the changer. I can listen to the music on my phone. However if a cd finishes my music goes of till another cd is playing which is shit... So do you know which wires it is that tell my hu a cd is playing. So I can hack these so the hu thinks a cd is playing when it's not and the multichanger does not require a cd .. If you have an email I can send you what I have.but I'm sure the wires are inside the don't bus lead and not the connects2 module. Or will it be easier to open the multichanger and hopefully it's just a case of glueing a microswitch connection together hoping that this will activate the signal so the hu when in aux mode thinks the cd is playing a disc.. Oml, I can desolder something broken and resolder on a replacement for something(have successfully done it with a broken internal gamecube battery) but whenever someone goes into the how the different circuts inside of a motherboard or whatever work I get lost and can't keep up.
Electronics is fun, the best thing are the datasheet for the chip that help you understand

Ironic that the wire didn't work with the tape input, but would have if you had plugged the cassette adapter into your phone! LOL

Maybe some people prefer to be bombarded with _less_ microwave radiation. Also, Bluetooth is fallible in a dozen ways that a cable is impervious to.
Bluetooth fm transmitter will never give you the sound quality of a CD aux connection

Often you can find some schematics of your radio online. Between this video and googling the radio model I could find it in two out of three cars. I came back to this video to ask a question, unfortunately he doesn’t seem to be responding anymore.

The G35 requires a $200 dash kit to Integrate the HVAC controls, since it's all controlled by one board. So an aftermarket route gets expensive quick...

When I do max volume on my phone through the 3.5mm jack, it cuts it down to half after a while with some fucking warning about hearing loss.

@@speedkar99 Yep. And like most, my phone is bone stock and likely to stay that way. I actually had CM on my last (identical) phone, but it was buggy with no updates, and I'm not technologically advanced enough to roll my own, or inclined to learn...best to be good at a just few things!

This video wasn't intended to focus too much on radio removal since many other videos have covered that. This is mainly about the aux connection.
