    Why did you go with JK Boots and not Nick's Boots?

    • @Jankapotamus1
      @Jankapotamus1 2 года назад +4

      Probably because they are an almost identical product and nicks lead time is like 6 months out versus 2-3 for jk. JK and franks are still primarily focused on work boots, nicks and whites are owned by people who never built a pair of boots and are more focused on pushing their “heritage” lines to break into a new market and drum up as many sales as possible.
      I’ve worn out whites and nicks. They are fine quality boots and I have no complaints about their product. I’ve got a pair of jk that I hardly wear because I don’t care for the smaller arch in them. Quality is on par with the others, just the lack of arch is noticeable at the end of a 16 hour day.

    • @brucethom4957
      @brucethom4957 2 года назад

      I prefer the JK arch for climbing in spur’s, it is slightly lower, but when all your weight is concentrated in the arch the JK is more comfortable at the end of the day.
      And that is also an individual preference based on your feet, wore whites for 38 years before trying the JK, JKs love my feet just a little more.

    • @Jankapotamus1
      @Jankapotamus1 2 года назад

      @@brucethom4957 Oh yeah, it’s totally personal preference/job requirements. I’m not a climber, so I have no extended experience on gaffs. I can definitely see how all that extra pressure in that area would lead to you wanting a lower arch to start with though. Jk, nicks, whites, Frank’s, and vibergs are all on the same level when it comes to quality. There might be small differences in materials/construction, but none of them are definitively better than the others. It’s just a matter of what fits/works for you the best.

    All of the linemen I know, always wear leather outside the jeans.
    Might be different I suppose if you're running a saw, what with all the chips hitting your legs all day.
    But I would think that as tight as they're laced up, that really wouldn't be much of a problem I wouldn't think.
    That said I do understand why you would want the tops covered just the same.
    Young man has pride in his work, as well as pride in his family name.
    Something that you really don't see so much anymore these days, and I find that a sad thing, because everyone should be confident, as well as competent in what they do to have that in themselves.
    But nowadays the young ones don't want to pit in the effort that takes, but yet they try and demand the same pay, and respect those of us who put in the years of hard work to get to where we are.
    Sad days when things are diegressed to the state were in, and the people blindly follow the government like sheep blindly following the Judas goat into slaughterhouses.
    Take care of those boots as your supposed to care for any quality tool, and they'll last you much longer than you think.
    By this I mean don't wear them for everyday walking around, just get in the habit of putting them on when you get geared up, and take them off at the days end to air out good overnight.
    I've always used a good clean oil and old tooth brush to go over all the stitches and seems in the wet seasons, and it keeps the leather from drying out and splitting along with acting as a moisture barrier too.

    While Custom made boots are the top of the heap for guys that can afford them. I've found (and I'm not trying to sound like a commercial here) but I tried a pair of over the counter Bailey's "Red Dawg" linemens boots built for protecting the upper calf and shin area (where I gotta have extra protection) then I took that pair of boots that fit me perfectly in fact so well they are my most comfortable pair ever in all my years on the mountain falling, anyway My wife took this new pair of boots to our local boot repair guy who installed Calks in them so I could wear them everyday in the timber and I can not say enough about these boots and they were alot less than a pair of custom built boots. Now all the guys who work for us (we own and operate our own Mom & Pop Logging Company) wear these boots but in the regular height uppers and they all really really like them.....just saying it's an excellent option if you can't see laying out that much for a pair of customs.

      Yeah thanks I just didn't want to come off like a jerk or some damn salesman making a pitch. I've had Hoffman boots, etc. But the price of getting into a pair is like crazy expensive but I do understand how important comfortable and durable boots or Calks are as well...if your feet or ankles ain't happy....you ain't happy and fatigue sets in (especially on really hot days like today for instance) that's when accidents happen and I don't want hurt nor our Son or any of our crew of guys either so my post really was to say this....if you can afford custom built to fit boots by all means do it....but if you can't but still need great fitting great quality boots that are built in my opinion just as good as customs....in my experience the Bailey Red Dawg boots hand made in Canada are in my opinion the top of the heap of over the counter, off the shelf boots.
      No offense intended to your guy there that earns his living making boots or anyone else who has the skills it takes to do that....they have my respect.....by the way tell Inbred Jed us Fallers here in the central mountain states say "Howdy"......lol.

    One of the best episodes I have seen you do! My wife even loved it. Now thinking about getting a pair myself for my wooded mountain property north in Prescott AZ. Super well done Jake and even a better success story for the opportunity of what makes America and the American dream a reality. It’s not easy but with hard work and commitment to quality you will succeed. Well done JK!!!

    Talk about in your face content! Lol i kept moving my camera away from my face, it was getting awkwardly close. Lol. Probably just because im an introvert and i have social anxiety. It is nice to see more of the background tho. And then close ups on the work being done. But thats simply my opinion, some may disagree. Aside from that, awesome video! Love watching boot and shoe making/repairs! I think that movie the Cobbler got me interested in it.
    Im really looking forward to getting a pair of climbers. But im concerned i might not be able to use them at my day job as a welder. Being on concrete, im uncertain if these would workout well for both Jobs. I own a small tree service myself. So im trying to decide. Anyone have any feedback on this? Any tips or pointers?

    I’ve worn JKs for work for the last two years, and I just sent them in for a resole and some love. They’re the best in the game! I’ll be ordering another pair soon.

    Thanks for this awesome video for us boot afficionados! It's an extremely rare privilege they granted your filming request. I'm sure Wesco, Nick's, Whites, Hoffman boot companies wouldn't have done that. Legal would prolly not allow it as they spend millions on P/R, customer service, legal, marketing, and advertising, so everything has to be exactly in sync and perfect facing the public.
    I've had Wesco make and rebuild 3 pairs of loggers/lineman's boots of different heights since 1983 and make one pair of 18" engineer boots in 2014. A couple things stand out that perhaps you should mention to JK Boots. An "L" steel heel plate protection that's fitted between the Vibram heel and the oak leather part to prevent the climbing spurs from shearing those two pieces apart, even with screws. Second is an optional leather lining to prevent soiled socks from boot oil. The boot fit needs to be adjusted slightly for the smooth leather lining (no sock staining either 😊). My last pair in 2014 was $475 with 6 weeks lead time. Today it's $880 with an 18 *month* lead time. 🤯 Have you ever tried on Wesco logger/ lineman boots? Thank to you I'm considering a JK two tone gray roughout logger/lineman boot. I just like the way they fit and feel on my feet. Forget Geogia, Carolina, Tec, Red Wing, and Chippewa boots. They don't go the distance today. Crocs??! Get rid of them dang thangs! 🤣 John.

    Did I miss the sewing the outsoles to the upper?
    I saw the gluing part but missed the sewing... Or is this model not sewn together like other boot mfg's?
    Curious.
    Great episode thanks and serious considering JK's for a climbing/work boot.
    Thank you.

    Retired lineman/A-cutter/cable splicer here. The only reason I switched to buying Wesco Highliner boots, is because Danner discontinued the 16" Powerline boots. If I were still climbing, I would definitely give these JK Boots a shot. The construction is impressive! This was a great video!

    Jacob,
    Just a question, can I ask you if you thought of having him put Calks in these boots ?
    I have 2 pair like I told you before but both mine have Calks in them and both are the 16" uppers (18" in my case) and both are designed for climbing like Lineman's boots But I don't do any climbing period nor does our Son or the other 2 guys who work for us. See I gotta have the extra protection for my upper calves and shins these boots provide me for medical reasons. Any soft tissue injury to my feet or legs and it takes 3-6 months to completely heal so you can see how even a hard bump on my shin or a scratch from a dead old sharp busted branch on the ground can give me real problems. So both pair I own and wear 90% of the time have Calks in them. I also have a regular pair of Black ones that I wear for good....I have a pair of tennis shoes (old stock Converse All Stars and a Nice dress pair of American made Italian style Black Dress shoes) but I wear my boots one style or the other 99.9999% of the time.
    Just wondering about the Calks...
    By the way this guy makes very nice customs based on what we saw in this video 👍👍👍

    I’ve watched all JK’s boot making videos now and they are fun to watch, but Tim explaining what’s going on in each step of the process makes it much better. He’s telling the origin story of these boots. So cool

    Well, this video sealed the deal for me I think. I currently own a pair of Whites Smokejumpers, but I saw they've been bought out by another company and their prices are climbing. I was debating between getting a pair of Nicks or JKs, but the Nicks have a super long wait time, and they don't have a storefront near me like JK does. As a Christian, I love to hear about how JK Boots was made by a Christian family and lots of hard work, and that the owners still get in the shop and work on the boots themselves. I also really like the available options. Looks like I might have to pay them a visit whenever I am able to buy another pair of boots.

    Great video, Jake. My dad wore these types of boots as a Davey Tree foreman from 1926 until he retired in 1973. My job as a kid was to unlace his boots and pull them off after he got home every evening. I doubt they were the same quality as the JK Boots, however. His pants were really cool. The were snug from the knees down and tucked into the boots. The thighs were wide--kind of like "jodhpurs" --very comfortable and they sure looked cool.

    What a great video Jacob.... your arborists videos are terrific and this is the next level. Thank you for telling your family's story Tim. Just terrific to see that a strong work ethic and Christian beliefs can still thrive today. I do hope that it will become the norm again. Thank you both for sharing this...very uplifting.
