I'll argue Jordan Peterson looked on his own personal issues with his addiction, and despite his reputation potentially taking a hit, despite all of the people who'll inevitably bash him for his weakness, he realized he needed to take care of himself first so he could build himself up better than before. That takes courage, even if he was suffering personal demons before. He's actively practicing what he preached, and I hope he'll recover so he can not only continue giving us amazing universal advice, but also so he can become a better, happier, person.

He is quitting some of the hardest medications to quit. The withdrawl can actually kill you if you rapidly come off of it. To put it into prespective, getting off cocaine would be a walk in the park in comparison. Even heroin is easier to get off

@Psychonaut if you knew anything about medications you would know if you're on a high dose of that stuff you dont just get off it easily. But it is kind of bizzare he went to russia.. he could have just tapered himself over a long period of time, i dont understand why he would need to go through such an extreme situation for something that can be solved by a really slow taper

If you weren't asking rhetorically, the main reason I have for generally disliking his ideas is that his position on truth and to a significant extent peripheral topics is fundamentally based upon irrelevant factors such as emotional benefit rather than objectivity (for examples see his discussion with Sam Harris).
There are all sorts of problems that such a thought process will cause, because in essence you'll be forced to choose between cognitive dissonance or a worldview that is based upon arbitrary factors in hopes of avoiding unpleasantness.
In other words he is still making the classical error of any given religious person where they can't handle the truth of life (not many people can) so they need to build less than accurate belief systems in hopes of finding emotional relief.
With all that said I suspect that he's smart enough to realize all of that on some level.
      I wish him well.

      @@onezerotwofour184 Interesting opinion.
      Thanks for responding!
I've read your comment over a few times, and admittedly, I'm a bit confused -- perhaps because I'm just exhausted right now.
Are you saying that you don't like him because you don't feel that his belief system isn't valid --- or, that he's been disingenuous, & that's the reason for not liking him?

    • @onezerotwofour184
      @onezerotwofour184 4 года назад

      @@MyCatFooed
      "his belief system isn't valid"
Roughly speaking it would be this.
Again for specific examples see his discussions with Sam (here is an excerpt where he explains that objective truth within some domains is at best secondary in his worldview.
      ruclips.net/video/8pLQl3fG8MQ/видео.html)
I have no reason to think he has been anything but sincere, and I do think that he has good intentions for his audience.
For what it's worth it's difficult to have answers for many areas of life (I certainly don't have all of them) so by no means am I trying to unfairly fault him for common human flaws.

Your bottom line sums up the issue with his position.

    • @abellaby8224
      @abellaby8224 4 года назад +10

Leona Owen He has ! And lots - his take would be that a "a broken heart" is the same as post traumatic stress. I am assuming this is because of a broken relationship / a betrayal rather than a death / loss but in either case the lack of preparedness would be the cause. If you discover that a loved one has been having an affair what you actually discover is that you didn't know the person you've been with, that therefore you didn't know yourself - that all the memories you have now don't exist in the way in which you created them - you're plunged into chaos and the underworld,
Have a look though hid personality lectures and the early chaos and order / tragedy vs evil lectures , there are so many lectures where he does go over and discusses what you mention. Good luck putting your model of the world back together again but it will have to start with you - it will be you who wasn't ready to deal with the tragedy of the world and will need to strengthen yourself!

Bessel van der kolk also mentions heartbreak a lot in his book "the body keeps the score". He also focuses a lot on (post stress) trauma. I would agree with the idea that a real heartbrake is (somewhat) traumatic, and has similar components. and hence tools to progress through it.

I’ve been viewing anxiety as excitement. There are different levels to anxiety but it usually starts mild for me. This mild anxiety is noticeable when it arises which allows me to become aware of it quicker before it consumes me. By viewing it as excitement the extreme cases don’t arise anymore or not as much.

Talking to them and reasoning in order to try to persuade them to see Jordan for who he truly is-a brilliant, well spoken intellectual and a decent human being with a positive message-alas, just doesn’t seem to work. For them, he’s some sort of ideological enemy, for lack of a better term. Those of us who support Jordan simply have to accept that his views are not for everyone. And that’s OK.

Start with your phone, and if you really want to share your thoughts... buy a microphone and put it on RUclips.
9 times out of 10 you will find a community of people that have the same thoughts you do...

Probably easier to do things without anxiety. Lacking focus causes more problems than just anxiety.
Nothing else matters beyond what you are doing in this moment. Can't really control anything else. Why worry about it if you have no power over it.

Your possessions, property and promises are an extension of the self - a less attached arm or leg.
Those things in conjunction with your experiences is the painters pallet from which you make a difference to those around you while you exist.
its a shame that your experiences are interred with your bones and barely can be transmitted to others.

@@jesss8922 Nope, it's performative contradiction. He's uses that phrase a few times throughout this lecture series.
Listen to what he says prior, it's an action, so performative and it contradicts the point being made. Hence, performative contradiction. Take care.

i really like what he says usually, but theres one flaw in his logic (or missing point).
if you do what he says during the 1st minute. yeah you have a huge dragon behind you, but the one in front of you doesnt magically disappears. so now you have double or more the anxiety.
and if youre in a tough situation where you cant really escape or move forward. then is inner hell for a long time.
People who really have troubles (or trauma) do not choose to be afraid or worried (demonstrated even at brain/neuronal level).
so the proposition is not THAT useful, since you don't really have a choice to not worry/being anxious, or what to worry about, even.
it's very useful for people who needs direction or motivation, yes.
but won't help with the worry/anxiety by itself, nor it will help removing the original fear, nor help people with trauma. Doing things "despite the fear" could be traumatizing as well.
Also i don't agree when he talks negatively about anger. Anger is a very healthy needed response to perceived pain/unfairness, the problem is not being able to channel it properly.
Also specially since he mentioning Jung and integrating our emotions, as well as "you need to be able to hold a large stick and talk softly" (there's some anger there, or the promise of it).
I think Peterson would agree with me, since he's been called "angry" a lot of times, and has spoke about being assertive, and integrating your shadow.
I've heard him many times saying something like: you need to be capable of the worst but be in control. How are you gonna do that by not engaging with it? how are you going to integegrate something that you're constantly dismissing or suppressing?
After all he studied about tyranny, i wonder how would you oppose to that without some level of anger?
i think our culture has a big problem demonizing anger and pathologically overfocusing on joy.
Anger could be biologically toxic when experienced constantly, but what's the cost of suppressing anger, or even not being able to show anger/assertiveness when necessary? (Read about trauma and cptsd)
A lot of people is stuck on trauma (or even hurtful experience) because they're not able to process their emotions properly and hence integrating the experiences. And that includes anger and sadness. Pete Walker and Bessel van der kolk have nice books about it.
(BTW there's a difference between being angry, and acting out unjustly or violently, i'm not talking about the latter).
PD: if Peterson reads this: i'd really like if you could interview Bessel van der kolk.

You arent goingvto know til we show up but we are coming soon. We need that tongue gone to make you powerful for once. With it you have nothing anyone cares about. After your tongues gone you'll have the strongest voice on earth.
