I am from Argentina. Ever since I have conciusness, my father has always adviced me to save in US dollars. Any sensible argentine does that. I only use pesos to buy groceries and pay taxes-utilities. As a matter of fact I have 20.000 US dollars I am bringing from abroad this week, to buy a pick up truck. The current owner (it is used pickup truck), don´t want any pesos. Argentina must be the easiest country to dollarize in the entire universe, except for any land or territory owned by the us government in this planet!

One of the many roadblocks to dollarization facing Milei, as explained to me recently, seems to be as follows: Until now, Argentine government made money off currency transactions forced at artificial foreign currency rates set by government. Furthermore, previous administrations borrowed against the future revenue stream of such future foreign exchanges (ie they mortgaged future revenues)’. On top of that, Argentine banks were forced to carry this debt and would go under if unpaid. This in turn could create a crisis in Argentina similar to the 2008 Lehman Brothers crisis in the US. ….or worse. Milei must find a solution to this ticking time bomb before he can dollarize the economy. I would guess some of the reforms he is pushing are meant to prepare the way to address this problem. If any of you have a better understanding, please explain.

Mr. Forbes made excellent remarks on Argentinian economy and current difficult realities.
Since I live in Bulgaria, where with the help of Mr. Steve Hanke, we were able to stop the hyperinflation more than 25 years ago, I may have some valuable advises:
No need to remove the peso, you can instead introduce a monetary board, where you fix the exchange rate of the peso to a stable currency.
Of course, that may require to denominate the current peso to a new peso (which has higher value) and tie the new peso to a stable foreign currency.
I would advise against using the USD, since the US economy itself is in a very difficult situation, but of course it is up to you.
Wish all the best to Argentina! I hope you make it through these difficult times.

He is a smart economist so I trust he is making the right choices. I'd dollarize right away and announce a tax reduction based on the amount of budget that is reduced. This way investors have something to look forward to, and the citizens are motivated to support slashing the budgets of many bloated Government institutions. It's a great way to gain support AND start getting the benefits of investors who are looking ahead. Plus, he doesn't HAVE to reduce taxes if for some reason they can't reduce the budget to a specific target, and it would be okay because he announced as such. Also, it allows for a gradual tax reduction based on progress so even if they can't get to the target they can still get closer and give people the sense of progress.

Argentineans currently hold above 300 billion US dollars. That is not the problem.
The problem is that President Milei started his administration with a Central Bank holding zero foreing exchange reserves and tremendous debt in pesos and dollars, at home and abroad; and a federal government in rampant deficit. So the country was in the brink of hyperinflation and debt default.
But now inflation and default fears are slowly, but steadily, abating.
Anyway there are good news. Dollarization is already underway; albeit in silent fashion.
Our finance Minister and the Central Bank President are currently swaping pesos, and peso denominated debt, for USD denominated bonds. At the same time the Central Bank is increasing USD reserves, day by day.
We expect that by the time of the next harvest (due in March-April) Argentina's Central Bank will have greatly reduced peso liabilities and will posess plenty of USD dollars at disposal to declare a formal dollarization, without fearing a run on the banks.
We are hopeful that by the end of this year Argentina will have dumped the peso for ever.

If they do not pay back the loan consisting of one third of all loans imf has in the world, then the whole west falls in economic despair. We the hard working tax payers, lend it to Argentina in the time when money had value. That was the money meant for the old age care of all our elderly. Agree the dollarization should be done, quickly, but it's key to ensure no deficit on the public accounts as a pre-requisite. The dollarization will not only kill the inflation almost immediately, but will also reduce the currency risk and currency exchange costs that will pave the road for foregin and local dollarized investments

This is a great advice and support message for our "hermanos" from Argentina! I'm hopeful that this is exactly what Milei is willing to do but is fighting with the political stablishment to get the green light. Freedom is great, freedom with democracy is even greater! Your message will certainly help on his endeavour. Thank you, Mr. Forbes!

Sorry Forbes, you are wrong. Argentina needs to go a gold backed currency like Russia, and America previously. Fiat currencies always fail and reliance on the fiat American dollar is lunacy.

Fix the USA before you start advising into another country.
I suspect Mr. Forbes would come out handsomely if the dollar replaces the peso.
