The funny part is that in older editions undead were immune to crits, and by extension also immune to precision damage like Sneak Attack because they dont rely on vital spots like organs to survive.
Isn't that because all of their vital organs are stored separately in canopic jars elsewhere in the tomb. Can't really hit anything vital if it's not inside the body.
I love how he seems like a nice guy with the "Can I help you?" and "Would you PLEASE go stand by your friends..." While the whole "Ending all life as you know it" sounds more like just theatrics. xD I might steal this guy for my campaign. :o
"Little did the lich know, the dagger was made of silver and blessed by the gods of life to obliterate any undead being it pierced" DM: *Sigh*.... roll a Deception Check to see if the lich believes your obvious BS. Me: *rolls*...NAT 20 LET'S GOOOOOOO!!!
4th Edition and 5th Edition D&D don't have the broad ruling on undead and constructs being immune to sneak attacks like 3rd Edition. So unless the monster has a specific thing about sneak attacks, rogues can go full ham on the monster (well when they can attack with advantage at least).
@@FrogworfKnight Sneak Attack does the same damage as the weapon tho right? So you can only apply it if you attack with a weapon that either deals a damage type the creature is not immune to or multiple types like flame tongue. Crawford also stated: Hunter's mark uses the same damage type as the attack that triggers it. If the attack has more than one damage type, choose one. #DnD I suspect the same goes for SA.
An interesting note back in Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition Undead were immune to Critical Hits and therefore also sneak attack bonus damage because they lacked vital organs😮 this has changed in Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition where pretty much everything is vulnerable too critical hits and sneak attack damage even objects can be critically hit in 5th edition
Have you heard about this homebrew where if you create a Lich, you might have them use spells or effects of earlier editions to show how long they have been alife?
@alexs5814 I kinda like that idea. It's got just a hint of meta in it, but not in a totally emersion breaking way. You could say that each Edition is an era of Magic's evolution, but those who were around for the earlier eras can still access those spells due to their mastery and that particular age of magic still lingering in their undeath.
@@alexs5814 I haven't heard of it, but I did come up with something similar to it on my own. Not just liches, other creatures, including non undead ones, and even objects can be like this. In my campaign this phenomenon is called a "living anachronism" because they have retained the traits that they had in an earlier period of the multiverse. This phenomenon is rare in the extreme, living anachronisms are far more likely to be the result of deliberate creation attempts rather than a randomly occurring phenomenon. Almost no one knows how to create living anachronisms, and the process of creating one is very difficult and resource intensive in terms of time, effort, and material. However, some individuals/groups do make them. The only group in my campaign that has a large number of living anachronisms are "the eternals," which is my take on modrons/inevitables. In my setting the modrons are essentially cosmic regulators/enforcers committed to upholding "the quarantine protocol" and keeping the multiverse safe from existential threats both internal and external in origin.

Funny enough, when an enemy does that you can technically try for a coup de grace and make the enemy roll a death save. Not every DM might go along with that, but it is a very funny thing to request next time the boss makes a big 'try your best shot' monologue in stabbing distance.
I admit, the real expected thing would've been him getting ambushed when he said "you thought you could sneak up on me" or releasing a loud scream when getting stabbed. The fact the party is too smooth brained to take advantage of the situation, and his lungs being so ancient all he could do was exhale dust is actually hilariously fitting.
We had an assassin in our DND group. He studied a vampire and used a wooden stake to circumvent its immunity to critical hits. The vampire in question was the BBEG’s #2
"You've lost the element of surprise" Counter argument, the rest of the party now has the element of surprise. Turn around again, now I have the element of surprise. It's a never ending paradox that guarantees my victory.
The ancient lich lord was still playing by AD&D 2nd edition or D&D 3.5 Edition where undead (and a lot of other categories of monsters) were immune to sneak attacks and critical hits. The adventurer group was playing by d20 Pathfinder or D&D 5E rules, where theyare not.
I want to run a campaign that has the bbeg slowly realizing they're in a game with rpg rules. Like after a sneak attack they spend weeks trying to figure out why it hurt more when they were stabbed while 2 people stood nearby instead of 1.
That sounds cool. Imagine if they reach the point where they can do stuff like Probabilitor from Gravity Falls and full on change the version of DnD they're playing on.
Rule number one of surviving as a villain, after well, NOT BEING ONE, is to monologue in your rooms, not in front of your enemies who will very much obliterate you.
I mean, as long as he has a friend within 5 ft of his target, his sneak hit additional damage still works. Surprise is the alternate requirement IF an ally ISN’T within 5 ft.
Funny thing is, liches canonically get this level of thought process from being over the living for so long and the decay of the brain doing much the same. Reminds me of a story where the heroes encounter a lich and he goes inside, puts a bear trap with a gold coin on the pin down on his doormat and closes the door.

Had a rogue and lich get into that conversation. Move action, draw a crowbar. Standard action, pry between C7 and T1 vertebrae.
When he said "you've lost the element of surprise" I fully expected Orc Girl to swing at him with her axe from behind.
Or the bard to clobber him with her lute
