jUST purchased two 2018 Nissan's, Altima and Maxima, I read to change the transmission fluid at either 30K or 40K miles, and not at 60K miles per the manual. Hope the cars are good, cuz I also have a Lexus LS430, and I think that'll never die.
I brought a 2006 Nissan Maxima se as my first car and it was terrible experience I ever had, waisted lots money on it and it was not worth it at all, garbage car . Then I brought 2007 Camry v6 se, and this car never gave me any problem. Love every second of having this car. #lovetoyota
I have the 2006 Maxima and the timing was about to go out, I heard the ticking noise and it was cheaper to just replace the motor than to just do the timing. After doing this the transmission went out after the motor was put in. Now I have to get another transmission. If only I knew about these problems before I purchased this car I would"ve never purchased this car.
I've almost been there every single issues he just described, I have the 2005 maxima SE and I've gone threw struts, a rebuilt transmission plus valve body, 4 alternators, cv axle *passenger side ,oil cooler gasket , all 3 catalytic converters , and that pesky code p1273 with the help air flow sensors and a few cosmetics like changing a freaking light bulb that are lovely HID. Oh and too best improve life of the timing chain use synthetic for about 6 oil changes and change it every 5,000 miles and use 10w-30 then go back to conventional oil and still use 10w-30 it will help with the tensioner noise ...* from my experience* So far it has been a headache from time to time but it's intermediate like I changed the cats 8 months ago and then the alternators in 3 months ago but issues come time from time buts it's just mainly the car getting old it is expected and I only had it for 2 years and I actually done almost everything but she's holding up nicely a/c is original and timing chain. I got it back in 2015 at 119k now at 2017 I'm at 167k miles and it never left me stranded... it just hurts to see something that was slapped together to die soon soon when you and actually give it a second chance and fix and make it better than new...
I know also spent lots of money on this car 2004. Everything this video talk about i had a problem with so far and it look like i have more problems to come. I will never trust Nissan again. Consumers be aware when buying your next car. I learned the hard way. The transmission said that Nissan know of the problems.

About five years ago, I inherited a '04 Nissan Maxima 3.5 SL with the 4-speed automatic transmission with 36k miles. As I've done research on this particular generation, '04 in particular, I've come to realize that it has a horrible reliability record. One of the biggest repairs I've had done concerned the ABS. A design flaw in the wheel hub allowed water to enter, but not drain which resulted in rust fouling the ABS sensor and burning out the ABS module (?) . Fortunately, I haven't had any of the timing chain, head gasket, and transmission issues mentioned in your well-done video, but at 78k miles I'm very concerned about my car's reliability going forward. I had read somewhere that the early '04 model year cars with the 4-speed were very reliable because this tranny was a carryover from past models and therefore proven, but then again, I've read reports to the contrary. I change my oil regularly and only use synthetic oil which should help keep the timing chain healthy, but will it make any difference since the chain guides are cheap and will most likely fail? My car runs very well, right now, but I'm wondering if I should get rid of my Maxima now, since it still has some value, before one of these catastrophic failures occurs.
I watched this video with great interest and I thank you for posting it. I find myself attracted to the 2009 NISSAN MAXIMA. How would I be sure that the wheel lock mechanism, engine block and head gasket issue are resolves before purchase? Are NISSAN parts cheap? Is it expensive to maintain? WOULD YOU BUY A NISSAN? IF SO WHICH GENERATION?
1995-99 were very good, 2000-01 was the best, 02-03 were decent but had oil burning issues, I still have my 2002, 04+ had transmission issues, everything else doesn't matter because they were all hideous after 2004
I have a 2008 Maxima with 68,000 miles with no problems yet but it is still very low mileage. I have been very careful about servicing it as recommended.
@@airuzair2424 Don’t know it was traded in on an SUV in late 2020, It was doing fine at that time. The only problems I had with it during ownership was the plastic breaking in the front wheel wells, this was never something I ever saw on the two prior Maximas I had.
Good info, the cvt's everywhere are a concern, more video's from Nissan Mechanics would be appreciated. Like "change the transmission fluid at 30K miles, not 60K miles", suggestion, or is this foolish? Nissan mechanics, what's your opinion?
B G I don't know if you're still around being this is 2020. I have a 2004 maxima. 3.5 eng. I've had my share of issues with the car. But I resolved them meself. And you are right> The 2004 is quite reliable. Going on 207,435 on the car and still going strong.. Did my due diligence as to taking care of this vehicle. I love it. A little note here...I picked up an engine analyzer computer. This works wonders when trying to nail down problems. Usually one can get the parts from the local auto parts store. Or Online. Which ever is cheaper. Have a good one.
I'm waiting for a decent weather weekend to get out and replace the tensioner....and guide....and cats....and O2 sensors on my 2005 SE. For $600 though....the car was a steal. Flawless everywhere else. I can do the work, so the price spent to fix it isn't bad at all. All in all, I have less than $1k into this car. I scored a nice set of 18" aftermkt wheels too.....$50. I plan on building a VQ for this ride eventually. 400whp is the goal.
They didnt mention that the 2004 to 2008 maxima has the infamous rusted out floor pans due to fault weather stripping on the doors which causes water to pool under neath the front driver and passenger foot area ,, that eventually rust and causes holes ,, nissan never presented a recall for that and will not acknowledge this problem leading to maxima owner paying thousands of dollars for repairs,,
got the o7 maxima 75k miles with leaking ac like said in the video its annoying to refill every two year or i can buy another pump but thats expensive itself.
Lol!!!!!!!!!!!!! To the guy making this video. I have a 2007 that is 187,000 miles. I got the car at 57,000 miles. It's still running strong! The only things I've done is replacing the power steering pump. Last year. But otherwise the car has been extremely reliable! Tell me the expensive headache you are talking about??? It makes me laugh when people give bad reviews on a car that i own that has been extremely good. 😅
hey man I have 127k on my 2007. I have a transmission leak coming from my torque converter and a lot of oil leaks. Have u had any other issues. Have u changed the cvt fluid at all?
Al R don't freak it's a known problem on the 2004-06 but thr doesn't mean all of them have it. I had a camry and it was a shit box my maxima has never screwed me. Biggest repair is brakes and rotors.
actually these problems started happening when the cars were just a few years old. Those transmisisons were crap. My neighbor had an '05 and her tranny went out in '07. The Sales Mgr actaully wrote her car up for less miles than it actually had. He said that he was tired of Nissan not honoring their warranties. I've heard this happening to a few other people I know who had 94 and later Nissans. As for the timing belt, they used plastic guides. These things would fail on all cars using the VQ35 engine. It's a stark contrast to what I used to see when I worked for Nissan Motor Corp in the early to mid 1990's. they took care of their customers, but they also didn't have issues the way Renault-owned Nissans do.
No this car you have to check the transmission oil cannot change it at 139k. Timing chain ticks at 150k or Lower ***DO NOT Attempt to FIX it!!!***** Alternator change can be difficult. Advanced experience required.
If money is no concern, the following cars have a consistent history of being the most reliable: 1) Lexus LX 2) Lexus LS (2007-2010 models had some issues though that other years didn't have) 3) Lexus ES
DO a video TOYOTA! ..i brought a 2007 Camry and was faced with many problems oil consumption, transmission, throttle body and more.now got a 2015 camry engine knock at every cold start pointing to cam gear failures please warn people!
Nah 6th gens are good it’s cause people don’t take care of their cars had lifter tick and fixed it by putting oil in because it was low the timing chain is probably cause it gets hot and breaks because no one puts oil in there car vqs are known for oil consumption just check your oil frequently also these transmission were bad I had to replace mine but runs like a dream only problem I have now is a missfire no dash lights once so ever

I have a 2004 SL Elite and I replaced the entire suspension, the 3 camshaft sensors, timing chain twice and burns oil. But I wouldn't change it for any other car. Once I replaced those faulty parts it hasn't give me any other issues. Have it since 2013
how is it now
@@airuzair2424 On November 2021 it started to smoke, so I rebuilt the engine. Two weeks later the water pump started to leak antifreeze into the oil so the engine was tear apart again. On May of this year, a transmission fluid leak was detected, turbine and filter was changed but the leak persist so it has to be open again to see why and last week, the oil pump failed so it has to go under surgery again. Other than that...it's ok. 🤒
@@LOV2XRL8RL damn how many miles? My 07 has 128k miles and it's giving me problems too. I have a transmission leak from the flywheel plate cover so most likely I need the trans dropped and the torque converter seal replaced. I think I might get rid of it next year and get a Lexus lol I don't trust the cvt in my 07 even changing the fluid religiously
@@airuzair2424 Like 220xxx miles. Yes, that's exactly the same leak I have. The CVT will hold if you don't drive the car like a race car. The main issue is the overheat, so the CVT owners put an aftermarket transmission cooler.
Ok so we are now in 2021...what is the verdict of the 2016 model's reliability?
Until 2003, Maxima was an excellent car. The reason is that the car was made in Japan until this year.
From 2012, Maxima was again a good choice, but the current one have electronic problems.
jUST purchased two 2018 Nissan's, Altima and Maxima, I read to change the transmission fluid at either 30K or 40K miles, and not at 60K miles per the manual.
#lovetoyota
GREAT NISSAN.
Just buy a 4th gen max like I did.. no problems other than cv joints at 216k miles 😂😂😂
Oh and too best improve life of the timing chain use synthetic for about 6 oil changes and change it every 5,000 miles and use 10w-30 then go back to conventional oil and still use 10w-30 it will help with the tensioner noise ...* from my experience*
So far it has been a headache from time to time but it's intermediate like I changed the cats 8 months ago and then the alternators in 3 months ago but issues come time from time buts it's just mainly the car getting old it is expected and I only had it for 2 years and I actually done almost everything but she's holding up nicely a/c is original and timing chain.
I got it back in 2015 at 119k now at 2017 I'm at 167k miles and it never left me stranded... it just hurts to see something that was slapped together to die soon soon when you and actually give it a second chance and fix and make it better than new...
Im looking to buy a 2013 or 2014, Maxima.... do you foresee any common problems with these models???
This video is nothing but the truth believe I know!
I agree I had the 04 maxima. Ill never by another..
James woods same
I know also spent lots of money on this car 2004. Everything this video talk about i had a problem with so far and it look like i have more problems to come. I will never trust Nissan again. Consumers be aware when buying your next car. I learned the hard way. The transmission said that Nissan know of the problems.
My 04 had tranny problems at 100k. Spent 3k for a new one at the dealership and it still runs like a champ at almost 170k. Also replaced the wheel hub, motor mounts and some other minor wear and tear issues.
How about the 2000 im on my second 1. 1st one i drove 400+grand miles only replaced the power steering hose and fan motors. 2 batteries. 2nd one still going 💪
Dude keep this up! This is gold information!, I would like to hear about the grand prix gtp 97 - 07 also the grand prix gxp and g35 04 and up, 2 door and 4 door. Bmw 325 from 02 and up. If you can thank!
I have a 2014 Nissan Max month with 70000 miles I bought the car brand new with 11 miles and this year my power steering pump and my driver side wheel bearing both went out At the same time and I have the limited edition model
My first car was an 04 maxima sl, Had it up to 360000 miles before my motor completely blew. Rn my 06 se is starting to have that tick noise lol
what did u do
this video is very true I own a 07 Maxima and I've had problems with the wheel bearing catalytic converter and now timing chains
Angela Williams how many miles ? I thinking about buying an 07
1995-99 were very good, 2000-01 was the best, 02-03 were decent but had oil burning issues, I still have my 2002, 04+ had transmission issues, everything else doesn't matter because they were all hideous after 2004
Brandon Semik 07-08 were the best and nicest looking
I thought the 2009-2014 looked the best
I have a 2008 Maxima with 68,000 miles with no problems yet but it is still very low mileage. I have been very careful about servicing it as recommended.
how is it now
@@airuzair2424 Don’t know it was traded in on an SUV in late 2020, It was doing fine at that time.
How could the catalytic converter break apart and be sucked back into the engine. It is down stream from the engine. explain how this is possible.
ventureelect he prolly means the pre cat.. Theres 2 pre cats that connect the y pipe to the main cat.
2007-2008 Maxima is the greatest basically a 4door 350z
No its not dude wtf are you smoking on, the 350z is rear wheel drive with a better transmision. A higher revving engine, and overall more reliable.
the g35 is a 4 door 350z
what car is perfectly reliable??? 04-08 Nissan Maxima's we're the best and most models being sold in the U.S
Get a 2003-07 Honda Accord 4cyl
They didnt mention that the 2004 to 2008 maxima has the infamous rusted out floor pans due to fault weather stripping on the doors which causes water to pool under neath the front driver and passenger foot area ,, that eventually rust and causes holes ,, nissan never presented a recall for that and will not acknowledge this problem leading to maxima owner paying thousands of dollars for repairs,,
Nissan probably figured those model years, most were probably scrapped.
got the o7 maxima 75k miles with leaking ac like said in the video its annoying to refill every two year or i can buy another pump but thats expensive itself.
I have a 08 with140,000 and it’s like brand new
seriously, could you put qualities, I just bought a maxima 2004 5 DAYS ago, BEFORE I saw your video ... I'm discouraged after seeing your video
thanx for your answer and you are right.
My 2004 Maxima has 169,000 miles and runs great.
WestPhillyKam I have 05 SL. all topics he stated happened to me.
It's a stark contrast to what I used to see when I worked for Nissan Motor Corp in the early to mid 1990's. they took care of their customers, but they also didn't have issues the way Renault-owned Nissans do.
i have a 2016 maxima the transmission is shaken on acceleration it is about to fell with 6400 on it in the shop right now 7/21/2019
No this car you have to check the transmission oil cannot change it at 139k. Timing chain ticks at 150k or Lower ***DO NOT Attempt to FIX it!!!***** Alternator change can be difficult. Advanced experience required.
Please do Toyota Avalon
How is 2017 maxima ?
My 03 ticking like a clock
Which top 3 cars you think are reliable ?
*Most
If money is no concern, the following cars have a consistent history of being the most reliable:
1) Lexus LX
2) Lexus LS (2007-2010 models had some issues though that other years didn't have)
3) Lexus ES
If money is no concern
LEXUS LX
LEXUS ES
LEXUS LS although the 2007 thru 2010 had some issues previous years did not have
Agreed! Also the Toyota Corolla if money is a concern! Top notch and bulletproof!
how do you feel about the 16 Toyota Camry?
Can anyone remind me wat car doesn't have issues?
Yep, the engine knock at idle, My 2011 has it.
How has it been holding up?
DO a video TOYOTA! ..i brought a 2007 Camry and was faced with many problems oil consumption, transmission, throttle body and more.now got a 2015 camry engine knock at every cold start pointing to cam gear failures please warn people!
Is a 2006 Nissan Maxima good?
I had 2004. As I got to 120000miles . It started to have major tranny problems.. cost about 1500 for rebuilt.. I just traded it back to nissan..
So a 2014 is reliable?
RagingTiger yeah.
After the 2012 update, Nissan fix it
Problems with my 02 maxima but it has 205k
Nah 6th gens are good it’s cause people don’t take care of their cars had lifter tick and fixed it by putting oil in because it was low the timing chain is probably cause it gets hot and breaks because no one puts oil in there car vqs are known for oil consumption just check your oil frequently also these transmission were bad I had to replace mine but runs like a dream only problem I have now is a missfire no dash lights once so ever
Phew... I have an 08
How has it been
@@taymulla8134 it's been great. I've had it for about 7 years and the only major repair I've had was replaced transmission. It had 100k miles and I drive it pretty hard. Besides that no complaints.
@@Boxjelly77 how much was a transmission replacement and did u get a used one? How has it been now I have a 2007 with 127k miles

Any Nissan after 2001 is not your best bet .. cause of Renault taking over
Have you seen the hot brand new 2020 Camry TRD? Maxima wish to be like that.
I wouldn’t recommend any Renault Nissan. They all r junk!
Nissan never will be Toyota, too many quality issues and poor customer relationship. Everything in the name of profits that’s their logo, right Mr. Carlos G.
