hi! I have trigeminal neuralgia from a dentist shot gone wrong numbing my lower right jaw but i LOVE the didgeridoo ...so i was determined to figure out how to pay without hurting as bad from nerve pain that is sometimes very debilitating especially when irritated. and YOU helped me. by saying to shift it to another piece of my mouth. so thank you!!!
As an Australian, I respect the Australian Indigenous culture. It's taboo for females to play the yidaki (aka didgeridoo in westerners language) dreamtime stories claim it's cursed for them and will bring infertility.
Haha "not like a horse...and not like a fly" Great explanation! I just got my first didgeridoo yesterday at age 56. Never played one before. So here I am figuring all this out!
The didgeridoo is essentially a large brass instrument. What you are doing to find your drone is essentially tightening or loosening your lips, making various different notes, until you find the one your didgeridoo resonates with, which causes a significant amplification of the sound.
Yep. And then you realize that brass instruments are all just tubes. They're all tubes! There's also very limited evidence that the material of the tube even matters--it's more likely the texture is what makes an instrument's sound. Or at least 95% of it.
I just got a didge (just love to call it that lol) today and this video was incredibly helpful because the only thing that I knew was that I had no idea what I was doing. Now I got loads of things to practice, amazing! Thanks so much, what a great instrument.
Thank you for taking the time out to explain this to us. With your help, I was able to find my drone! I literally just received my very first didgeridoo an hour ago. I'll buy an authentic eucalyptus root didgeridoo when I feel I've nailed it. Thanks again brother! Be well.
Just got my didgeridoo back after YEARS of not knowing where it was an I picked it up and instantly got the drone back. Like riding a bike haha it’s so crazy.
This is amazing! Thanks for the information and in depth explanation. Got my didgeridoo three days ago and I’m starting to find my drone thanks to these tips!
Fantastic video, really helpful.. I made my own didge when I went outback Oz many years ago, but the circular breathing is what I have to master. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this wonderful video!! I'm a beginner didge player, and this is the first serious and best video I've found so far on teaching myself this wonderful instrument. Thank you very much for this, and may you continue to release more such amazing videos and materials :)
Thanks again coach! I have some work ahead of me but this is something that I also found intriguing and wanting to learn. It seems to have amazing healing properties. Stay well!!!
Thanks a bunch for your explanation about circular breathing. I've always wondered how didgeridoo players can breathe in and out at the same time, which, it turns out isn't actually the case. I can't do it myself, as I just learned about it from watching your video, but now I can certainly understand the concept and how it works once you've mastered the technique 🙂👍
I have had it all down after years of a didgeritsotting in the corner of the tattoo shop, but the recirculating breathing, but you told the trick. (Never played brass or wood winds )
Sometimes I'm vocalizing or even singing through the didgeridoo as I'm playing and that adds some crazy harmonics. other than that, any other harmonics come from the shape and interior of the instrument. the more uneven and chaotic on the inside of the didge the more harmonics.
Quick side note I never read the comments below me but when I do after I leave a comment it's always like I'm saying the same thing the person below me did not on purpose I have my own ideas and I am truthful when I say them to you didgeridoo
👍👍Very excellent video. Thank you for the awesome tutorial. Especially for a beginner not making it too complicated and letting us know what the basics are. Circular breathing is the tough one. I play the Native American Flute also so it would be very helpful for flute playing also
It's been two years so I'm not sure you'll see it but, If the drone when done properly reverberates nicely and steady but is on a lower note 🎶 do I need to keep searching or is it possibly my mouth shape and PVC didge for beginners to blame?
I have a video about finding your drone --I'd start there. It definitely could be the mouthpiece shape and didge shape, but there is certainly a lot of technique that could help.
I got a 6 ft bamboo stake from ace hardware for $2.50 and nocked out all the inner rings I think I’m getting the drone there’s definitely a pitch that seems different then the rest. Would you recommend cutting the bamboo shorter? Would the ridges from the inner rings cause problems would it be better if it was entirely smooth inside?
Thank you so much for sharing this instructional video!!! I have come to it by way of a sleep study as I suffer from UARS (Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome). It is not quite apnea, but a disturbance in my night time breathing which causes many awakenings and a lot of daytime fatigue as a result. Right now I am using a 17" vacuum cleaner tube as my 'instrument.' I can get a 'sick moose' drone and make a lot of different sounds, but because I have such allergies, circular breathing is eluding me. I just read about the Orange Swirl PVC instrument and hope it would be a good choice as I am a very small person with a small mouth. Do you think that is a good choice? Any other recommendations? So far I'm having fun, am noticing an improvement in my sleep (and really irritating my partner). Thanks again for posting this!
I've not tried the orange swirl PVC instrument but I have researched them and I think it's a fantastic choice. If you need to modify the mouthpiece to fit your mouth you can use beeswax (or some people use a PVC to rubber grommet attachment). A longer instrument than 17" will make a tremendous difference and make it easier to do the circular breathing.
I have been playing for a while. Not brilliant. I actually do the horse sound and it does give a deeper sound, which is 1 style I've heard indigenous doing. However, i absolutely agree with all you've said and I will practice doing this better lip tension. Amazing
thank you so much kuch for the tutorial! im 15 and just got gifted a didge after messing around with my uncles one. my didge sounds a lot lower pitch on the drone.... is this normal?
Great question! I haven't tried it with piercings so you might have to tell me how that goes! If your lips stop vibrating, you might be putting on too much pressure. You want just enough pressure for there to be a firm seal with your lips (air shouldn't be escaping around the mouthpiece, only through the didgeridoo) After that, you might have to put more air pressure through your lips, themselves. Like you're making that horse sneeze sound. Good luck!
Last night I dreamt that I had to play a didj and could not, as I was blowing in the wrong end :-D I wonder what that means? Now this video popped up in my RUclips this morning. Does the Algorithm listen to our dreams? Anyhow, Now I am looking for a pvc pipe :-D. Thank you for a very helpful video.
How hard it is to learn? How long do you think it takes to get it right? i live in Brazil and thinking about purchasing one but just wanted to be sure i wont regret
I learned what I demonstrated in my videos in about 35-40 hours of practice. So if that is a good spot for you to enjoy it I think you can learn a lot in a short time
I'm really considering getting one but i don't want to spend a lot... i found a Meinl brand didgeridoo por 30 bucks... will it sound bad? Again I intend to buy it for recreational purposes so i don't know how much to spend. Any recommendations? Thanks Edit: I might try out the PVC pipe idea and then decide what to buy
I love it! I think that's a great idea because it gives you a feel for the experience. I actually wrote a blog post on finding a good didgeridoo for beginners that might be helpful for you. soundadventurer.com/best-didgeridoo-for-beginners/
One small tip (while I'm learning circular breathing!): instead of the straw trick, push your index finger against your lips and let the air from your cheeks escape out of the small corner between lips and finger.
Very straightforward and informative video. No "secrets", just clear and cogent demonstrations. Thanks for posting this!
