The helmet looks great, but is it necessary? It seems like all lineman wear the speed flex model without complaint. It is rare to see a lineman down due to a head injury. Their movements are strong and violent, but coordinated enough that they avoid hits to the head unless they are at the bottom of the pile on a group tackle. Wouldn’t a helmet specific for a running back make more sense? Regardless, the helmet looks great and is probably an upgrade to the speed flex.
*im not an expert* but I am an incoming med student that’s been super interested in sport-related head injury research and as a result have gained some knowledge and experience in the field. A lot of people are starting to think it’s more the accumulation of subconcussive trauma that can lead to chronic conditions and degeneration later in life, and linemen experience a ton of those subconcussive hits. There’s definitely still research that needs to be done to determine it’s a cause and effect, but I bet these were designed more with those long term effects in mind than concussion prevention or acute head injuries per se
being an offensive lineman myself, i can tell you that it is very much helpful. and yes, we may not get injured a lot from head injuries, but a lot of the time we can take serious blows to the head which don’t effect us as much as other injuries. but as a fellow commenter said, it is mainly due to later degeneration like CTE and other known conditions that are caused by head contact in lineman that this helmet is made to protect us from.
Not true I’m an line man (offense and defense I live in a small town) and because you’re below everyone your head is vulnerable as when linemen pop up they could accidentally grab you face mask or neck and when linemen are hit they get hit really hard and some extra head protection would be great
