ANY practical effect that involves an animatronic is stellar. It’s honestly a shame they didn’t utilize such a thing later on. Though I hear they did use animatronic effects in Shin Godzilla- which is pretty dang cool. It’s just something that eve if it’s not real, it gives you the sense that you can touch it because- literally you could. Animatronics should be the go to tbh
I came right when I got notified and left a like Klayton! The Cybot Godzilla is so iconic! Like it was used in so much promotional material for Godzilla 1984, that I feel like most people think of it before the suit! The snarling look of the cybots face is incredible! Definitely would’ve loved to see it more!
A 16-foot Godzilla animatronic? I'm probably the only person on Earth who wants to see a movie featuring a 16' Godzilla, lol. Imagine a super-badass T-rex that fights like a MoFo and can breath fire! A "reasonably sized kaiju movie" if you will. ;-)
Absolutely! Animatronic creatures when possible with cgi for details or to accent certain things is always the way to go. The lighting and texture makes it look more natural and gives the actors something real to work with.
Thank you for doing this video, I always love to watch special features on DVDs to see how movies are made. This one is definitely classic from my childhood as well 👊😎
Despite the fact that, imo, the final effect isn't exactly fantastic I think it's still worthy of praise from a few important aspects. First of, considering the budget of the movie it's damn impressive they managed to get something like this made, secondly, the sheer scale of the of animatronic is very impressive in it's own right, it's BIG & thirdly, even though it doesn't quite compare to some of the later animatronics used in the Godzilla movies, for 1984 this was super high tech and impressive. I actually can't really think of anything comparable from western films of the time that looks any better. Compared the Godzilla films of 70s that predated TROG the jump in effects quality is insane.
It cleared the way for 90s Godzilla movies where animatronics were used with great success to portray Godzilla's reactions. I say, if only human actors were doing as well as this Godzilla, and a few nonsenses were cleared up, those 90s movies would have been legitimately great movies, and not just great monster movies. And Godzilla wasn't grotesque or anything, but felt like a real animal. I keep thinking that whoever designed Godzilla's reactions for the Heisei series, had spent whole life with cats.
cybot godzilla could become its own monster, a robot that looks like godzilla but moves very robotically and underneath it looks like what the insides of the original cybot godzilla looked like, so basically a new fake godzilla
Although that thumbnail will haunt my sleep tonight 🫣, I appreciate this video! Along with a restrained story that played up Godzilla’s destructiveness and role as a Cold War antihero, the “cybot” Goji was partly responsible for the titular monster’s return to form.
@@Dragoncurve Pretty much any time there is a close up of Godzilla roaring and you can he his eyes and tongue moving, it’s an animatronic. I’ll try to find some behind the scenes footage
Anytime I can watch coverage on my favorite City Stomper, the better! Cybot Godzilla was awesome but it's a sad shame it wasn't used after its 1st debut. It looked FANTASTIC! Especially the snarl!
While the Godzilla Cybot wasn't used in any film after the Return of Godzilla. There is footage of the animatronic being used to advertise later Godzilla films like Godzilla vs. Destroroyah.
Hey! The Kickstarter for the Monsterverse Omnibus just launched! It will include every Monsterverse comic published so far, plus an all new comic and plenty of other perks! It would be great if you did a video on it to signal boost it and help it reach more of its stretch goals to enhance its value for backers!
Now, when it comes to special effects, I am more of a CG person myself but every time I watch Godzilla 1984 I do appreciate the fact that Toho went for practical effects with that giant animatronic, and the suit showing that a good monster movie can still be well made without using a ton of CG
Cgi and animatronic can be done right when balanced, cgi can also do many things that animatronic is limited to, just look at godzilla vs kong that came out a few years ago, those fights couldn’t be pulled off with animatronic
Fun Fact: Steve Miner *("Friday the 13th Part 2"* & *"Part 3 in 3D")* was to direct his own American Godzilla film known as *"GODZILLA: King of the Monsters* *in 3-D"* in 1983, from a screenplay by Fred Dekker *("RoboCop 3")* and they contacted Oscar-winning FX guru Rick Baker to built a full-size animatronic head, while also planning to use stop-motion animation. Sadly, this 3D Godzilla film never got made because of budgetary reasons just like Jan De Bont's unmade Godzilla film in 1994.
Not only did Steve Miner wanted to make Godzilla in 3d, if it been made and a success, he also wanted to make a Rodan remake in 3d. I'm imagining Rodan being made with Gomotion similar to Dragon Slayer.
Ahh goodness, i never realized they made th full bodied animatronic. I thought it was just the head, reminds me of the shin Godzilla animatronic they decided to CGI over gahh! Just makes me think of all the interesting special effect that could be used in giant monster films more
3:10 on the Other side, I'd say that it looks a lot Stupider. what was so special about the 1984 Design is that because of it's Face it reminds us a Perfect combine between a Japanese Demon and a Nuclear weapon (despite it's Eyes were Derpy), while the 1989-1995 Design looks like some Goofy angry cat.
The reason I believe why they stopped using the Cybot was because shortly after Return of Godzilla was released, someone snuck in to Toho’s Studio and stole the 84Goji suit, and to this day it’s whereabouts is still unknown. That’s probably why they gave Godzilla a new look in GvB and thus would of been inconsistent if they used the cybot (tho they probably could of just made a new mold/skin for the animatronic that looks somewhat similar to the BioGoji suit). Funny thing is that even the BioGoji suit after GvKG got stolen, but luckily that one was retrieved.
I can confirm, the $475,000 is a much more realistic number for that animatronic than the $475.00, I feel like anyone who told you $475 is either ignorant as to how expensive the materials alone are (even in the 80s), or just being a jerk as some people are about older film effects. As far as I'm aware, we'll never know the true cost of the T. Rex animatronics from Jurassic Park but I have a friend in the movie industry and she said she'd be "surprised" if each of those animatronics alone cost less than 1.5 million, so yeah, 475,000 seems pretty normal for big-scale animatronics like that.
I think the only time Toho once again tried to use an animatronic godzilla was during the production of Shin Godzilla and the animatronic was really really cool but unfortunately they didn't like the way it moved and it's been scrapped.
my all-time favorite Godzilla design is 84Goji from Return of Godzilla/ Godzilla 1985, and my 2nd Favorite is the 1962 KingGoji suit from King Kong Vs Godzilla. p.s. What if in the next JP movie Rexxy Winds up on Skull Island and mates with a VRex and there offspring gets raised by Kong in the Hollow Earth and because of the special radiation down there, they get as big as Kong And Godzilla.
To be honest, I have always preferred the look of the animatronic over the suit. It looks more menacing, it's the face that got more exposure in marketing material, it's the face I associate with classic Godzilla in general, and its overall appearance looks like a stop-motion puppet Ray Harryhausen would've made.
This was a great prop from the movie, and despite its limitations, it worked pretty well in the movie. And it wasn't cut from the American version much. Only one or two shots that lingered on a tad too long were trimmed.
Apparently the director originally wanted to make a lifesize animatronic for filming, but that was (unsurprisingly) impossible so they just made a life size foot for the movie. Edit: I got this info from Big Action Bill's video on the making of "The Return of Godzilla"
I really like Return of Godzilla because it achieves its desired goal excellently: being the most faithful sequel to the tone and message of the original movie. What better setting for a sequel to the post war atomic horror piece than right smack dab in the middle of Cold War tension. With each nation eager to use Godzilla as an excuse to launch nuclear weapons. Shin Godzilla may be the best representation behind the tragedy of Ishiro Honda’s iconic monster, and Minus One may be the best movie in the franchise in general, but both versions of Return of Godzilla currently stand as the king of faithfully evolving on the original source material!
I heard that they cut a lot of scenes from the original Godzilla movie due to the American government trying to down play the whole anti nuclear weapons things
Im not going to lie, when I see images of the animatronic from the movie that doesn't have the rubber skin on it, it looks like something out of "Five Nights At Freddys" lol 🐻😅🤖. And don't forget "Shin Godzilla" also had a giant animatronic that was built for that movie but I don't think they used any of its scenes in the final cut of the film. 🤔 Also I think I prefer the American cut of the film over the Japanese version. Not just because of my nostalgia of me renting the movie from "Hollywood Videos" when I was younger. But it's also because I feel it ties more closely to the original 1954 film, the soundtrack is a bit better, and I defiantly think the ending from the American version is way better honestly. Not to mention I like that they brought back Raymond Burr for this film to connect it with the American version of the 54 movie. When I gotten the new dvd of the movie that was released back in 2017 (or in 2016, I don't remember exactly) it wasn't until the last minute when I was watching it that I realized its just the English dub of the original Japanese film and not the 85 Raymond Burr cut lol. 📼🦖📺
I do got the blue ray of Godzilla in 1985 Come with both the Japanese and American version I wasn't Japanese version I see the amatronics Godzilla looks awesome.

*Godzilla 1985 is my most favorite Godzilla film of all time.* I absolutely love the American versions of the 1954 and 1984 films, I severely wish Toho would swallow their pride and release a combo Blu-ray special edition to chronicle the history of their making with documentary behind-the-scenes content. The character of Steve Martin is a real cultural influence on American (and Canadian eh!) audiences, with memorable scenes and quotes that I find to be very relevant in today's real world.

The animatronic head used in _Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah_ was absolutely phenomenal.

The reason why the animatronic Godzilla wasn’t used was that the eyes stoped working, making it look kinda derpy
Yes I'd love to see this brought back again, and for it to have the same serious tone we got from 1985
I could honestly picture the animatronic in the thumbnail without the skin covering being used for analog horror in FNAF, it would just fit so well.

As a kid this is the movie that made me fall in love with Godzilla.
Godzilla 1989-95 all had half Godzilla animatronic scenes used for close ups of Godzilla roaring.

GODZILLA 1984/1985 is the best Godzilla look & roar‼️
@Joshua 1992 I think Godzilla 1985 would win.
Great video klayton!
They did use animatronics in the other 80s/90s godzilla movies. They were just smaller, not even full body like the 84 one.
