About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
When Glenn's guitar playing starts to sound better than you it's time to start practicing 😂
Wow
i guess we don't need to practice.
Lol! He’s getting some chops, I do need to practice more!
@@morbidmanmusic lol
Joke is hilarious but I actually think Glenn is a solid rhythm player and his tone is always great.
Dudes guitar playing literally gets better every video he does, Bravo my good man 👏
I know right, getting smooth!🤘
Wow
Facts.
Right hand yes. I don't get why hand synchronization is taking that long.
@@NeZversSounds don't forget. He's been playing guitar since the eighties. Let that sink in
I love this. It means people who can't afford kempers, axe FX, helix etc. Are in a position to get a really great baseline tone for a relatively small outlay both live and to record.
Couldn’t even tell! Great tone all around. Great video Glenn and glad to know there’s more and more options for all budgets these days! Love it
That Laney with a delay and maybe a modulation pedal of your choice on a mini pedal board, never mind being the perfect fly rig, might just be the perfect won't-break-your-back rig period for massive tones!!
😮😮😮😮😮 I couldn’t tell them apart. Wow! That’s a monster. Glenn is taking lessons cause his playing is getting awesome
I minimized the window to listen blind but had to click back to see who was playing. DAMN GLENN, practice has really paid off!
I wanted to get an Ironheart years ago, now I just want this pedal. I don't know the ins and outs of it all but I know what I hear. Big ass tone from a tiny ass box. What a time to be alive.
I had the Ironheart Studio 15 and really liked it. The amp was 4 channels and could pull off most anything. The only reason I ended up trading it was that it was a rackmount, had it been an actual head unit I'd definitely still have it.
What a time to be alive, your are right! I remember inexpensive amps from the 80s and early 90s absolutely sounded like a can of bees. What you can get today for the price, particularly with digital modelling is absolutely incredible. Combine that with the increase in quality of ;budget' guitars thanks to CNC machines, and we are living in a great time indeed. You can for a few hundred dollars buy a guitar and rig that rivals what you could buy just 20 years ago for several thousand dollars. What a time indeed!
Always had a thing for Laney amps . Have had a few AOR heads, combos , and Ironheart tube rack . This amp carries that lush rich unique Iommi tone . The Vintage Sabbath Laney Dna is in it , I can hear it , yay ! Awesome amp . Great demo .
With tones that sick, guessing is worth a shot. 10.00 B, 10.06 C, 10.14 A, 10.22 B, 10.25 B, 10.37 C, 10.44 A. Glenn your channel kick ass, thanks for showing us how to save a buck, and where tone really comes from(cab, speakers, mic).
Great review, Glenn! Your playing certainly shows off the possibilities of this mini-amp.
Thanks for putting your videos on RUclips.
DAMN GLENN! Your playing has gotten so much better in the last year or so man! Really has been an inspiration for me to really start working on getting better myself. Always been a big chugging rhythm guy but seeing how much your practicing has worked I’ve started trying to get my lead chops up! Keep it up brother!!!!
Holy crap Glenn, can't believe that pedal/amp delivers beautiful, full, warm organic, 3D piano lows!
Except... it doesn't.
@@TheCyberMantis that's because it doesn't have tube glow
@@TheCyberMantis wow, so you're sure you won the pedal right? ... Right?
@@TheCyberMantis Found the dude that won the pedal!
Picked up a NUX MG-30 two months ago and it's incredible. I used to play Boogies and a hand-made high-end tube combo (Kingsley) so I like my tubes for sure- but this little modelling pedal is astounding. Solid state and digital tech has come leaps and bounds in the past ten years- no shame now in using it. The Laney sounds great.
No. Nux Sux.
Man, you're stepping up your shred game! Nice work!
Glens playing just keeps getting better. Keep it up. I love your videos.
Honestly if I had to guess, I'd think you never actually swapped it with the other amps because I couldn't tell a difference at all. So I'm gonna say, it was the Laney the whole time
It sounds amazing. I might get one just for the hell of it to have on my pedalboard. Plus I've always liked Laney's products
I really love the idea of these Pedalboard sized amps. This and things similar like the Orange Terror Stamp are the way forward in my opinion.
I like it! Great tone and I couldn't tell when you made the switch.
Sounds great. No idea when you had it in the mix. Keep up the good work!
For those of us interested in cleans/ low-gain, I recently checked out the Quilter Superblock series - same price as this one and with great Vox, Fender & Plexi voicings. Between pedal amps and profilers, it seems we’ve finally reached tube amp obsolescence for all practical purposes. Sooner than I ever expected!🤯🎶
What's interesting about Quilter is that their combos and dedicated cabs use Celestions BN12-300s which were originally designed as bass speakers but apparently work fantastic as guitar speakers as well, at least for clean tones on electric guitars and for electro-acoustic guitars and such. I'm researching these speakers and very tempted to buy them one day to replace stock speakers in my amp. When I contacted Celestion they said it would be safe to use them in an open cab 100W tube guitar combo even if I used bass cranked to the max, it would just sound weird for bass lacking low end due to the open cab but it would not break or anything, and with guitar that less-than-bass-cab-levels-of-low-end is actually a good thing I guess. I know Zilla cabs also like these speakers for players in unorthodox band setups like some doom bands where everyone plays Bass VI type baritones and therefore there's no separation between a guitar and a bass and so on. Barefaced also use them in their cabs. I wish Glen would also test these speakers in context of typical high gain metal in different types of guitar cabs (open vs closed, 2x12 vs 4x12, etc.). What I also find interesting about them is that they're apparently flatter, more even sounding than most guitar speakers, a lot of people use them jn cabs with tube power amps with digital modellers instead of using active FRFR. That of course can be seen as a bad thing, but consider this: you can add an EQ at the end of the chain in your effects loop and these speakers will respond to that way better than most other guitar speakers and you could be able to emulate different types of voicings that way maybe? Not entirely cause it would be before the poweramp stage but still I wish someone like Glen or Ola Englund or Kohle Kult would test this idea
Man I love Laney! I still have my old LC30II sounds so great, best cleans ever, this pedal sounds really great! Can't hear a difference at all! Man you really improved your right hand! This guitar looks so cool too, looks so much cooler than the Mustaine V.
Bro - I have an early (hand wired) LC50 and totally agree, they sound really beautiful. Funnily enough I hated Laney up until I heard an LC30 and then I found the LC50 real cheap and now it's the only combo I play often with no pedals, just guitar straight in.
I've still got my second amp I ever owned - an LC50 and it's a loud little fucker. Personally I think it does the British 60's clean just on breakup tones extremely well.
This is the game shift for me, enough to buy it anyway! Awesome tone and pretty damn impressive playing on your part glenn. Definitely getting this!
Keep up these great informative videos. Laney for sure start of comparison
I've always heard about these Amp in a pedal, but this sounds fantastic. I know two notes is doing something similar with the revolt series too.
I’d say this is a great step forward for metal especially, because I know the “amp in a pedal” thing has been awhile, but I feel like there’s never been any good dedicated metal pedals (I could be wrong, I don’t know every pedal sized amp out there) but it sounds GREAT
Also awesome to see you still getting better and better at playing. Every vid feels like a jump in skill, it’s great to hear.
Victory has some really good ones and Orange has a pretty good one too. Fuuny that they are all from the UK
You may want to try the BluGuitar Amp-1 Iridium edition, it's made for metal and I quite like it. It is a bit pricey, but it has some nice options that the Ironheart doesn't seem to have (FX loop, in-built noise gate,...), slightly bigger format, but 100W of punch incase your drummer is a brute.
I would definitely consider the Ironheart as an alternative though.
@@Theflamers08 Its probably because they're not slaves to their own greatest hits generation after generation like the way we are here.
@@Theflamers08only gripe about the Victory ones are that they are pretty pricey. Like the Kraken pre-amp it sounds good but the price costs as much as a lunchbox amp
Got one!! Love it thanks Glenn!
Immediately ordered one after watching this video! It just came in today, and it fits exactly my all-pedalboard rig idea I started early last week.
Truly serendipitous, and a rad piece of kit
The funny thing about this promotion was the end. The guitar sound of Glen's channel theme song sounded gobs and bounds better than any of the sounds in the demo (alll amps) so there's that.
For sure, this seems like an incredible unit and I think and hope Laney do very well with it. Like its been said 1000xs already, these are happy days for young guitar players starting out and guys looking to make their gig lives easier. When you really think about it, should this be a surprise? With the current technology, all we're trying to do is create and recreate a distortion generator after all. I can't see this being rocket surgery and as the tech improves, so will the results and the varying formats distortion generators will be available in.
You realise there’s also two ”real” amps in the demo, right? It’s just a different tone.
To me it sounded like there was a presence drop at 10:08 in the rhythm guitar. That's a pretty damn impressive little box there!
i heard the same thing. There was also a lot less sag and a crapload tighter.
Nice chops! Love this pedal! The Schecters rip. I have 3 of them! That V is sick!🎸🤘😎
I’m going to say the Laney was played immediately if not the entire time. They make some good shit
Warren Demartini that's who I think of when I see Laney amps. The 80s rock with Marshalls Randall's and Laney's.
The first name that comes to mind when I see the Laney badge is inventor of Metal himself, Tony Iommi.
@@dionr1168 you just educated me, all these years I never knew that he created that awesome sound! Thank you
@@3dogrecordingstudio628 Billy Corgan as well
I love my Digitech RP 50, it's been a trooper for years so, I just practice my instrument and never worry about tone. The EQ on my tascam model 12 can really make a big difference.
My best friend had one of those years a go, it was a total beast.
So underrated. RP50 sounds great.
One of these days someone will do a video of an rp50 next to a Kemper or something, and the used price will jump to $500. You just had to be kind of gentle with them, I used to wear out the footswitches on RPs.
That's a sweet little piece of kit.
Glenn has been practicing! There has been a lot of progress over the last while.
Hey Glenn! Been following your channel for the last five or so years and am currently in the middle of building a studio in my home. I have a million questions to pick your brain with, but I’ll just keep it simple for now.
Have you done any videos on any of the DAW controllers, such as the Presonus Studio One, or the Icon Qcon Pro series? I feel like having a DAW controller would help me be a lot more efficient in my mixing, along with having something tangible to touch.
Also, have you ever had viewers submit their setups/studios for critiquing/roasting? I feel like that would be very entertaining as well as very informative to those wanting to know if they’re heading in the right direction. Thank you for doing what you do, man!
I'm about 95% confident we're witnessing the beginning of the end of big bulky tube amp. I often wondered where it would go when kemper came out with cloning amp sounds and then micro rigs became a thing. Now we're seeing both coming together with things like tonex and this amp being small and affordable for the average player and sounds just as good as a tube amp to where you really can't tell the differences in a mix.
They will keep selling $3000 tube amps as long as there are suckers out there that use words like "Dynamics" and "Warm". The old guard will never admit that there isn't enough difference.
I gave up the ghost already. I will NEVER buy another tube amp.
Don't forget about the feel difference
I like both for the situations they work really well in, but I feel really bad for people that can’t appreciate the pleasure of playing a tube amp in the same room as yourself.
Some people need headphones, so they go to Walmart and buy the cheapest Bluetooth headphones they can’t, and get what they need. They’re happy.
Others, having experienced something that changed their perspective, would accept no less than a wired connection with a tube preamp.
It’s the story of the men in the cave, sometimes.
I don’t think there’s any reason to deny that tube amps in the room with you provide a more intimate sense of connection. Even my axe 3 doesn’t feel nearly as responsive. It most certainly behaves and responds differently when I touch the strings. To say otherwise to me says that you just don’t know.
@@ryanbwags you don’t need to buy a $3000 tube amp if that’s what you’re chasing. I can tell you that when I worked and saved up to buy my dream amp, the triple rectifier, it was well worth it. Some people just think that they can’t ever obtain what they like though if it costs adult money. There are cheaper options with less engineering and patent inside.
Love the bloopers at the end!
I bought something similar to this last summer when my tubes went out and I absolutely LOVE IT. Gritty, dirty, and a lot of fun to play!
Jim Lill asked his followers to send in their favorite unrecorded tone
There are some pedals that will run at 9v and power a cab. The orange terror stomp, also the quilter superblock series, theres some others that are escaping me right now. Those likely aren't in your metal sound wheelhouse, but they do exist! Also are fairly affordable.
I own a terror stamp, a quilter micro block 45 and mooer baby bomb 30 they are 19-24v systems.
@@heinzamatic Hmm maybe I'm mistaken then. I think the superblock uk/us can do 9v at a lower output wattage, the others I'm less sure of.
Terror Stamp definitely isn’t 9v - it’s 11. I use it as my main live amp - it’s bloody great!
Quilter Superblock runs on its own power supply by default but can run in like 0.5w mode on a 9v pedal supply.
You and Dagan at PMT did great reviews on the Laney today so... I've just ordered one! (Great playing by the way!)
Wow dude your playing is sick.
Love your videos. 🤘
I want to thank you Glenn for doing these videos shooting out solid state products against tube counterparts. I've been sayi9ng for the last 5 or 6 years, that digital/solid state has gotten to be as good as tubes, and despite 20+ years of playing professionally, my colleagues have laughed at me for thinking this. Your blind test are really proving how us "guitarist" listen with our eyes more than our ears. I can't tell a difference, and I know that no one in our audiences can either. I remember the first time I was watching a live band where the guitarist was using BiasFX on his Ipad as his rig. As a member in the audience, that actually has an ear tuned for good guitar tone, i couldn't tell. People that think they can, are full of shit, and just want to justify their expensive amp purchases.
Couldn't tell them apart and it wasn't even a surprise. I remember back in the day I had this tiny 2 piece rig that consisted in a Pod XT bean and an Electro Harmonix 44 Magnum pedal format amp (the one that started it all). Plugged it in a Randall 4x12 loaded with celestions Seventy80 (great speakers if you use a digital rig in my opinion). I paid like 400€ for the whole rig, everyone laughed at me when I showed up with it, didn't last very long when I plugged it in. My brother even borrowed it for some gigs and recieved compliments from the best sound guy I ever met for his tone !
Always loved your bloopers 🎉😂
ive always enjoyed what Laney has to offer in solid state products
All I know is it sounds killer and your playing is getting Killer!!! Thanks for the great content as usual brochacho!!!🤘😎👍All is right with the world now.Well, almost kinda not really.😜Thanks Glenn, you kick a$$!!!
Just ordered this. Can't wait.
That sounds great!
A:10:00 , B:10:08 , A:10:12 , B:10:25 , A:10:43 This is my try at the peddle if its not too late.
I bought this pedal the first day it arrived at the stores here in Spain, and the only reason was this video. Now I can realize that I have saved hundreds or thousands of bucks in a world class amp. This little thing sounds absolutely killer. Thank you for your advice, Glenn, you weren't wrong with it.
Great video!
wow this really did it for me. I'll be looking for one of these..
Sounds fantastic! I want one.
Their bass preamp is also impressive, I've been gigging with it a while now and has all the adjustments, ins and outs any bassist could need (or understand). It's also cheap enough to just use as a highly tweakable bass drive. Looks like I'll be starting a collection of Laney equipment very soon. Many thanks for the demo man, much appreciated and fuck you
Thanks for bringing this to my attention Glenn! I've been looking at a lot of fly-rig solutions lately and this one is a very strong contender now. It's particularly useful when there's the option to go to a real cab or go direct to a PA with a cab sim. And this is a LOT more affordable than some of the other solutions I've found (albeit perhaps not as feature rich). And it's Laney which is a cool factor for me cuz I live in The Black Country, UK. 😁
Mr F, great playing mate. As someone who started playing guitar nearly 4 decades back, we’re living in a truly unique time with the quality of gear that is available now. The Laney sounded huge. Its versatility for recording and as a live tool is appealing.
Man, I came here for the pedal, stayed for your playing and V. I love your content man, cheers.
Man, solid state technology has come so far! As much as I love a good tube sound, I am more than happy with the sounds I get from my amp. That Laney pedal RIPS, too! Awesome!
You could definitely tell back in hte 90's. just a fuzzy buzzy sound. Damn they sound killer now.
This is what I've been looking for so many years, I play small local gigs and it's annoying to get a guitar amp, I got my hands into a QC and I love it but this would've been the greatest tool either for a beginner or a seasoned player that just get's to play. Thanks for showcasing it GLENNN!!!!!
As far as my old ears can tell it was all the same amp or pedal with no changes. Sounds amazeballs.
I saw the add this morning and was like I wonder if Glenn has one for us to check out then boom !
Nice playing, Glenn!
“C “ sounded a little more hollow to me. But in the end, 299$ Laney is the CLEAR winner. Differences are negligible. And I own a tube amp too. I love how this newer tech is rattling the gear industry. Hats off to Laney
Well color me impressed!!! It does sound pretty killer! I could imagine not having to lug around a 30lbs head to gigs with this!! Very cool!
You're really starting to Shred these days.. 🤘🤘🤘
Kudos.
Complete guess 10:21 time stamp for Laney. That is one ripp'n little box! I am amazed!!! Love what you do Glenn. Make more we'll keep watching! Loving the chops on the guitar!
Its kinda hilarious that the Roman Numerals on the guitar are the fret numbers. Awesome video Glenn!

The pedal to me seemed around 10:20 mark.
Metal up your a**
Love your content \m/
Nice Kyuss shirt, Glenn! Your playing just got incredibly better from a week ago. WTF? Good work.
My guess is that they're all the Laney SS.
sweet Kyuss shirt! love that album
Killer riffs Glen! That pedal is raging! I love tube tones but to be honest solid state is killing it these days. I have two tube amps and two solid states. Honestly when I'm playing metal I'm hooking up to my solid state amps now. Love to pick up one of those Laneys
"Does it do clean?" **Plays one chord** "Yup". Moves on 😂
Very hard to pick out what amp is what in the mix once again and thankyou great job with the testing. I feel like at this point its not even about hearing the difference between amps, id go as far to say its more about how the amp feels and responds. Hearing the differences is one thing in a mix, but if I were told to PLAY each amp in the mix I feel like the differences would be maybe a bit easier to find. Thankyou once again Glen!
Omg the clean tone part at "8:20" 😂😂😂
One chord . . . "Yep, it does cleans."
Sound awesome! Great playing Glenn! Would like to know what guitar you are using also. Looks nice!🔥
Wow that sounds great! I have to have that little beast!
Laney was 1st amp. Honestly I have no clue, love these shoot outs. I don't think I am as crazy as I thought. Great job as always.
Wow, this thing is nutty!
every time i see this your guitar chops,. boss level now.......1000.....metal....
Sounds fantastic.
Gonna go out on a limb and say the little bastard was actually playing the whole time and you only changed the brightness settings hahaha
I closed my eyes for the test in the intro and it finished so quickly. I didn't even know the amps had switched yet 😂
I think I heard a slight difference at 10:14 to 10:57. I might be wrong though. My man, you're really killing it ! I love your Content ! Keep up the good work, Stay awesome and Metal Bro! 🤘🤘🤘
Great schtuff dude !!! The Laney is @ 10:45 to 10:59. Now, send me that bad-boy !!!
Glenn, you're playing is awesome! Great video!
I have my Laney Ironheart IRT-SLS and it is incredible. I'll pull the trigger on one of these bad boys too.
Cannot tell which one is the pedal and which is the tube amp to be honest. But, I've never claimed to be able to tell the difference. Especially in the last 10 or so years.
Love to see this man's constant improvement at playing...
A suggestion for your next goal: Left thumb positioning. It's gonna be a huge level up once you work on it.
I'm gonna say the Laney comes in right at 10:07. Whether I'm right or wrong, this thing easily stacks up with the two tube amps. I have to get one.
Excellent video!
I just recently uploaded a review on the Chug Pedal. I have it just running through a cab sim. Sounds like an insane real amp to me!
Can't say the lead sounds have me sold, but this unit certainly does the rip your face off rhythm tone to perfection
Nice video Glenn.
They must name it "the tube snob".
Dude, hearing your progress makes me want to jam! Would love to see ya play in a band context
Check out The Eagle Has Landed.
I've been playing with a lot of laney captures the last couple months on my quad cortex and man they sound so good. just the thickest tone I have heard even when you took the boost off it sounded so good. I would love to get this thing they also have a really great pre amp you can pick up too.
10:16 :) I feel the change in high frequency of guitar. Saludos desde Chile.
As for trying to pick them apart: I couldn't tell the difference overall. I heard a very slight change in Amp C, but not enough to sway me in any definite direction. In the mix, it was much more difficult to even hear that miniscule difference. It may have just been my auditory nerves playing tricks on me. Either way, the entire selection sounded very good, especially when put in a mix. Good use o the scientific method with the doubl blind tests. It's one of my pet peeves when individuals come in with presuppositions only to be shown evidence to the contrary and many of the same people will double down and/or move the goal posts. That's nothing short of intellectual dishonesty and I absolutely despise it. Great playing as well, Glenn. Hope you keep getting better at it. Cheers!
