Wow!!!! My heart is so happy to see you two review such an amazing band! Arkona are and have been such a force in Pagan Folk Metal. One of the best, imo. Proud Russian Heathen Heritage!! Much respect and admiration to their beautiful, powerful, fierce vocalist Masha Scream. She has been raging for years with her passionate clean, brutal growls and vicious black metal styles. I highly recommend their other song "Rus" as well.

Yes paganism is very connected to the earth, we are of the earth and it is of us. Food, water etc all comes from the earth... Doesn't even the Bible say that god created man of the dust of the earth? Go for a silent walk in the woods, listen to the water, the birds, the rustle in the trees, the earth under your feet, tell me you do not feel the connection to it, and all life...

I spent hours coming up with what I thought was the best song for them to review and I think I made the right choice. I like all their work but if I had gotten yarilo reviewed it would have been about 2 min of review before they got bored and went off on a tangent.

    • @mementomori1900
      @mementomori1900 5 лет назад +1

@@arkonafan8810 I am annoyed with their Yarilo phase, they were too happy sounding, first few albums were still their 'green' days, it was cool but that's about it while last two albums perfectly convert the slavic fairytales, dark stories and atmosphere into music, I understand that non-slavic people can't really identify with it as much as we can as it's not exactly something that can be thought or explained. Last two albums are just a storm of emotion for everyone that grew up on the twisted dark slavic folklore stories told to them by their grandmothers before bed.

    • @corvusbruxonemeton
      @corvusbruxonemeton 5 лет назад

@@mementomori1900 Get down off that profound cart, dude. All cultures have dark fairytales and mythemes, and darker approaches. Any Pagan culture had bright and dark sides. Yarilo is as acceptable as any "dark fairytale" material. And most European countries have twisted folktales. My grandfather sent me to sleep fearing a one-toothed vampire hag who feeds on children while asleep, for fuck's sake xD. Don't feel so special 🤣.

    • @mementomori1900
      @mementomori1900 5 лет назад +2

@@corvusbruxonemeton Buddy, are you being intentionally stupid or what? Did i ever say other cultures do not have them? The topic here is that Arkona is specifically band that delivers and lives on Slavic lifestyle and folklore, sings and makes music about it, how is whatever other culture relevant here if you're trying to portray this particular one? Fact is while everyone can and should enjoy their music, not everyone can possible understand it the same way as someone whose been literally living in that environment and part of that culture for even thousands of years, and the whole point is music on the past two albums was perfectly mixed with traditional music from the rural areas with modern metal music to fit the atmosphere, how's your one toothed vampire any relevant to anything i said? Vampire being a creature from Serbian (slavic) mythology to start with and a Serbian word.

A fucking amazing band (I don't swear to much, but the superlative is justified for this song). This stuff is totally unique and incredibly powerful. Masha's vocals are incredible. There is actually a very good live version of this Vin (since I know you love live stuff) you may wanna check it out. ruclips.net/video/wq4hYCh-drU/видео.html
There is something incredibly beautiful about stuff like this sung in the band's native tongue. I feel the same way about Windir.
This isn't my favorite song from them, but its still incredible and I guess there was a good translation for this one so it makes sense to do it. Oh and the great video.
Vin I think has it right on (message wise) and I think the video is a visual metaphor for returning home to find your home and traditions dead and gone. Just as in the video he returns back to find the old woman dead in his absence. Yet he felt her passing, they illustrated that beautifully in the video.

From The Album Yaz On Napalm Records
Arkona is a Russian folk metal band. Their lyrics are heavily influenced by Russian folklore and Slavic mythology, and their music incorporates several traditional Russian musical instruments. The name of the band "Arkona" refers to the last Pre-Christianized Slavic city-castle. Wikipedia
Members: Maria Arkhipova, Lesyar, Wład Sokołow, Lazar, Kniaz
    English Lyrics
    Empty villages’ call
Peers into my soul with silent blazing.
    The past gaze’s ghost
Is caressed with fatigued eyeholes gazing.
    Rotten gaols sweet fume
    Is destined to swallow,
Give Earth-Mother the tears flood to consume,
Reach with hand the Celestial Marrow!
    Empty villages’ call -
As stellar scattering at a fog lair,
    Empty villages’ call -
With ringing echoes tortures my heart.
    Empty villages’ call -
Drowsy place of the dead temple’s prayer.
    Empty villages’ call
    Is a secret’s calm guard.
    The chilling chant
Wounds my heart in a downpour drop.
    Deafening me in a dreams’
    Silent slough.
    With my fiery gaze
    I burn to the ground
Opalescent light of my tears -
    Lunar silvery shine.
    Leaving footsteps, footsteps at night
Going to nowhere, from the world I escape!
Only light leaves tracks on my pathway.
Light Is left here in a new dawn’s shape.
    Maybe in hundred aeons
    I will rush headlong
Through the plains, raging roar of winds,
I’ll return as one who eternally lives
    And I will stay alive.
    And my shivery hand
Will touch the soil of the plain.
    And I will feel again:
    Empty villages’ call
Gnaws my soul in embraces of night.
    The past gaze’s shade
I see in the glow of a thawed light.
I see flickers of lunar dust
In the forest crowns of grey,
Twinkling which will merge in own bonds
With the heart of the land of paternal graves.
    Empty villages’ call -
In scattering stars of the lunar temple.
    Empty villages’ call
Tortures my heart with madding rites.
    Empty villages’ call
Kept in silence by fog guardians.
    Empty villages’ call -

Yes, Paganism has a lot to do with being in touch with the Earth but there's more to it than that. I think it places equal importance on ancestor worship. I know people like to call Varg an evil, vile, racist but I think his thoughts on Paganism are spot on.

Let's see if my request is ever going to be featured. Attempt #59
    PESTE NOIRE - DUEIL ANGOISSEUS
It's black metal with the most insane vocals ever. Plus it has a beautiful guitar melody. Really strong atmosphere.

I think you should try to find the song D.O.A. by Bloodrock. It was one of the earliest precursor to metal you could find.
