I’ve been playing the Pokémon TCG since 1999! Back then most players HATED having their energy cards removed by either Energy Removal or especially Double Energy Removal - fond memories‼️
I remember Seismitoad Ex being advertised on TV as part of the expansion when it first came out. Pokémon Company absolutely knew what they were doing when they opened this can of worms, I guess.
The "Wall Stall" archtype wasn't born in 2015, I was playing Wall Stall in 2000. Mr. Mime being incapable of being one-shot, Alazakam moving damage as you see fit, and a bench of Chansey's to absorb damage counters until you bounce them away. Loved that deck, glad to see modern Pokemon still sees it as viable.
i can think of exactly one card that oneshots mr mime - nidoking with Toxic. 20 base, 20 from double poison. Boom, KO. never played tourney pokemon though, so i have no idea if that was even viable back in the day.
This is why I loved watching expanded deck videos when PTCGO was the client. You could hear the palpable hatred players had for busted cards (mostly trainers) when they used them in their expanded decks
@@BurtsPTCG Didn’t see this till now but I just don’t enjoy having to shoehorn it into nearly every deck honestly, at least its nice to be able to think a bit less in what to discard with an ultra ball though lmao
I remember a deck from a couple years ago, that was painful to play against. It was like only playing dolls that wont give any prizes and the whole deck was made in a way that the person could always inifinitely search, recycle and replace them. There was literally nothing I could do, I lost every time, even with ADP Zacian meta.
i remember back in the day when forest of giant plants was released, the unlimited ladder was the best way to grind for coins with shiftry and every game was either an unsuspecting person just trying to play their pet deck and getting fanned out of the game or shiftry mirrors where the person who lost the coin flip would just concede. it was incredibly toxic but i would be lying if i said i didnt miss it.
Honestly, that shit was what made me stop playing the online client. And it wasn't even restricted to unlimited, the deck was just as toxic in expanded.
To be fair, Igglybuff and Muk were both very effective at dealing with Slowking. In fact, the deck that won the 2002 World Championships didn't even play Slowking, but instead played 3 Igglybuff to turn off the opponent's Slowking! I actually enjoy playing against Slowking, I think it is a very beatable card.
What a trip down memory lane, I really... really... hated ADP... The deck had like an 86% win rate at tournaments, a feat I don't think we've seen since. Feels like the only way adp lost was a bad start LOL. And completely agree on Battle pass. Great video as always and great editing!
86%? Damn bro. In a game like pokemon, you can just lose because you looked at your cards the wrong way and they said fuck you in the shuffle. Not even modern day garde, lost box or any of the other top contenders come close to having an 86% win ratio
These videos are wonderful! I enjoy how you tell the story of the game. It would be really interesting to see a format review video like this at worlds or rotation time every year. A review of an important deck as it rotates would be cool too. Ex. Mew VMax at the next rotation.
I have never played this game, but even I knew about Seismitoad lol. When I would play MtG at my LGS I would overhear people talk about how much they hated that card.
Since X and Y came out I was enamored my the TCG. A few years later when I was around 15 I entered a Pokémon TCG tournament with a deck I was proud of building, and the second person I played against (probably in his twenties) was using a Seismitoad EX deck, I literally could do nothing and have never been actively involved in the TCG ever since
Actually wallstall before wailord was pretty good with Team Plasma snorlax, we still had crushing hammers, the special energy hammer, and the item pokemon catcher wasn't even a coinflip, you'd just strand useless pokemon in their active and snorlax wouldn't let them retreat.
Earned your sub, didnt realise the video was almost an hour long. I played from start of XY till start of SUMO, definitely hated that stupid toad with the bats. Other very hated cards in my local scene was battle compressor with night march and vespiqueen.😂 boy did i win matches with that.
I love Lost Thunder Giratina. I used it in my attempt at a Cofagrigus expanded deck, which eventually turned into Tsareena V. Constantly reviving to keep powering up the attack is always fun! I don't get what the damage counters mattered, though. Those damage counters literally never mattered or pushed past a damage threshold.
@@BurtsPTCG Because it was expanded, I also used the Exeggcute (weirdest, most pointless "once per turn" ever), it was a really fun deck! I should try to rebuild it now that we have Quick Ball, too. Niche, but still fun!
Yeah some people and the Pokemon trading Card Game company themselves seem to forget that cars are not always good on their own they're better together as a team with other cards when you come combined and combo with other interesting effects That's why you have a team of six Pokemon not one gigantic Pokemon that can win it for you.. That's why it's called a team.. And there is no I in team.. One Pokemon cannot just win it alone..
Heads up in the 2004 world championship a junior was given a game loss for forgetting to discard her supporter. It was called 10- at the time. This was in the semi finals. No prize penalties existed at that time straight to game loss. She was dominating G2 and that lack of support discard = game loss. With 45min of crying, because of one of the worst judge rulings in history a simple loss made G3 unplayable for her. The penalty was for the most hardcore thing you can imagine... Forgetting to discard her supporter which was supposed to be left by the active till end of turn to see if a player had used one or not. I do not know of any other that led to the entire penalty and prize system being redone.
@@V2993k I watched Professor K get ousted by judges in the Kissimmee 2014 Regionals for forgetting to write "Sycamore" in Professor Sycamore on his decklist; it was very obvious he MEANT Sycamore, and at the time Juniper was run in the same format. Instead of having him clarify, they just had him sub the cards, so he walked away from the tournament iirc. This was during the earlier days of XY.
Yeahhh vip pass isn’t that bad after all lol. Some of the modern cards are annoying but none are really thattttt busted. Some of the troll decks are frustrating (lunatone, zarabox, wugtrio, united wings etc..) but they take a good amount of luck to set up properly.

Some of my players had a ceremonial cremation of ADP in the fires of pure hatred. The burnt card is now forever enshrined in a binder as a solemn reminder of some of the darkest days we have experienced in the tcg in recent years
There’s a deck in the Legacy format that I absolutely loved playing and hated playing against. It’s the Weavile snag claw deck. Basically it had a poke power that discards any card from your opponents hand when evolved. You would play de evolution spray to reuse this poke power. Then you would play a slowbro that controls the order of the top 3 cards of their deck, then to top it all off you spam laser, crushing hammer, Pokemon catcher, lost remover (enhanced hammer but lost zone instead of discarding) etc. while making use of sableye that has an attack for 1 energy can get any 2 cards back from your deck effectively having them dead draw the entire game while you slowing take 6 prizes from poison damage. Seems like everyone forgets about this deck. Just spam disruptive cards while feeding your opponent bad cards via slowbro while discarding any card that’s a threat to you. I had around an 85% win rate with this deck typically only losing against it. Also any deck using special energies only was an auto loss since you would loop lost remover so they can’t get their energies back.
People seem to forget the horror of Junk Arm! Effectively gave you up to 8 copies of any item while requiring two discards, which is barely a cost. I remember this being combined with Hammers, and even worse was that it existed with full power Catcher! 4 was bad enough, imagine up to 8!
I've had ADP and VIP Pass as some of my most hated cards of all time and still is But after i have been watching videos about past formats and toxic cards from the past, and everytime i see some of those videos, that Sableye that forced a Rotation to happen is almost in all of them because of it's impact when that rule changes happened it is just absurd to hear about
Sableye was a really balanced and fun card until they changed the first turn rules. The rotation was not created by sableye, it was created by the first turn rules causing sableye to be broken
I started playing with a basic premade deck in the early gen6 late gen5 days and I remember the cornerstone of my deck was a bouffalant with an attack that did a decent amount of damage as it was but did double damage to EX’s
I see a lot of people saying they dont want card xyz back but honestly - I want them to come back. I want chaos. Iron Hands ex for example - I hate that thing already because it ruins my currently best/most played decks but god I love the chaos its gonna bring into the format

@BurtsPTCG I think I'd like to see them try something like. Your opponent can only play 1 item card next turn on an attack. I feel like that atleast gives players that small fighting chance. There are definitely ways that they should probably balance a bit better tho
My first pokemon tcg deck was miasma wind leafeon using Roserade to poison and confuse the enemy pokemon with a single rainbow energy. People hates that lol but then hypnoticic laser came out and my god did people hate that card.
I hated Let Loose Marshadow so much. Marnie I could deal with because as a supporter you would know it was coming. But on a body in the bench it was so unreasonably busted. Thank God they banned it and haven't printed any effects like that ever since.
before the switch to live i had a bad ass deck based on the archies ace in the hole jacob van wagner 2015 deck using wishi washi/blastoise that i would destroy the adp everytime
Ive made it to ADP, and wamt to use my previous format knowledge to make some guesses: Junk Hunt Sableye Pokemon Catcher: pre errata Tropical Beach N Dark Patch Ace Spec Comp Search.
Sounds like your Malamar deck is similar to my single strike Urshifu deck. Essentially Houndoom to turbo energies, while making use of the single strike scroll that does damage based on how many counters are on the pokemon. Im trying to teach my nephews that if a card doesnt support your play style, it better be so fuckin powerful that it doesn’t matter than youre trouncing your own play style to utilize them. For my deck, that is throwing Radiant Jirachi out there to absorb a few hits, maybe get a lucky KO - when all i want him for is his ability on death to target draw cards from my deck
People just hate Lysandre because he's Lysandre. :P (Just joking, I've never actually played the TCG; Though I honestly enjoy seeing Lysandre and would love to buy those cards)
42:44 HAHAHAHA If you only got hit with 4 Shiftry then either you had started with just 1 or 2 basics in hand, or the opponent somehow completely bricked. It was not uncommon to get hit by the Shiftry 6-8 times, meaning even if you started with 4 basics in hand you were still likely to lose before you got to play a single card. I know that for sure, because I got hit with that many Shiftries. Repeatedly. For two weeks straight until I just straight up uninstalled the client for the Online TCG, and didn't touch it until recently with the revamp into Pokemon Live TCG.
Ohhh gotcha! (im so dumb) one reason why Ive heald onto my malamar core is so i can always play it! Those ones filmed in this video were the same ones i was playing with when it was standard legal 🙌
I mainly played YuGiOh and I'm more familiar with the shenanigans that goes on there and I gotta say....Pokemon TCG players, are you okay? These strats are straight up evil. Yeah YuGiOh had Yata lock and other stuff but this is just insane.
@@BurtsPTCG I remember seeing a short vid of a combo that summoned a 100,000 atk point monster that if your opponent doesn't attack it by the end of their tun, they lose the duel, and had a combo with another card that when sent to the graveyard due to a monster's effect, ended the opponent's turn and the guy also got a card on the opponent's side of the field that did just that at the start of their turn. It was a long and confusing watch.
@xAxQuickstrike hahaha! The amount of combos in yugioh makes my head hurt 🤣😭 couldn't imagine Trying to hop in an try to learn it from a beginners perspective 😭
I think item lock is a perfectly good mechanic when balanced well. Just look at recent formats dominated by ability-based draw and absurd amounts of items played per turn. Muscle band allowed a lot of the annoying strategies to work in the XY era and Vit Band is proof we’ll never get that again. But the bottom line is any good unconventional deck is subject to lots of complaining from the people that love their beat stick decks.
this is the first i've seen of people hating lost thunder tina, and that was basically the height of when i played competitively. is this based on your opinion as well?
Oh really? My twitter was filled with people saying tina ws awful cause it pushed every over one prize deck out of format 😭 and definitely not😂 I Played malamar exclusively until it rotated so I loved the card 😂
@@BurtsPTCG it might be your bubble or brazilian meta being weird but i stg i've never seen hate for tina before this video! wild that there were haters, it was a solid card
I felt good as a kid because I had 1 Team Rocket's Trap and 3 Rocket's Sneak Attack which were both considered to be some of the top competitive cards of their day. I later learned that format was very degenerated and had an unhealthy, highly luck-based meta game and felt a tad guilt. -- A.T.
We seem to be in an alright format right now despite some E block cards like VIP Pass and debatably F block Lost Zone cards being a bit ridiculous. (Giratina VSTAR, anyone?) Charizard ex from Obsidian Flames does scare me though... That's a lot of damage for 2 energy, and it gets set up absurdly fast. Charizard can win the game by turn 2! Other decks take at least 2-3 turns minium to get set up.
Been playing competitively since about 2007 and this video hit a lot of my old wounds, but one of my worst didn't make this list. I remember having a visceral reaction to every LuxChomp deck that reared its ugly head. The issue for me was just the absurdity of a forced switch of your opponent's choice whenever they evolved into their main attacker in Luxray GL Lv. X that would OHKO or two-shot everything in the format with Expert Belt/Crobat G and then get all the damage on the board healed on a whim by another amazing attacker in Garchomp C Lv. X that could pick off anything you finally managed to get back to the bench. So, what if you did 30 damage to one of your benched Pokémon or had to discard two energy and it couldn't use that attack next turn? They just healed their entire board if you didn't OHKO anything because both Luxray and Garchomp have no retreat cost. Apart from maybe the Stormfront Sableye or Pokémon Catcher, Luxray GL Lv. X is my personal most disliked card in PTCG history. Garchomp was tolerable because of the restrictions of the healing. Luxray was just too heavily rewarding people for evolving into a good attacker. They could just easily pick off all your 90hp or less support Pokémon for free or stop you from setting up your evolutions turn two of the game.
I never thought of adding luxray to this list! Everyone ive ever spoke to about it said they loved the card! Im different to it tbh! I appreciate your viewpoint tho, maybe it will make the ep 2!
@@BurtsPTCG I may just have old wounds from not playing it myself, but I guarantee if something like this made it into modern play, people would be up in arms. We almost had it with Lycanroc GX's ability, but it didn't have a meta-viable attack and gave up two prizes in a meta with Guzma.
@kylemarkham1946 lycanroc had dangerous rogue and claw slash which ko'd zoros and with counter gain you could do it for one energy 👀... Which sounds eerily similar to luxray now i say it out loud 🤣
The actual reason why slowking never got changed by Wizards is because Wizards weren’t responsible for balancing the game it was Pokémon company themselves who balance it. Wizards just print the cards out. When wizards went to Pokemon to bring up the slowking mistranslation Pokemon didn’t do anything about it soooo slowking got printed and the rest is history

I was an avid player during Lost Thunder and for some reason cannot remember Giratina at all... remember malamar very well though
It was the main Attacker?! 👀
I know this was mde available after this video came out, but you can actually use salvatore to get a bannete on the first turn
That is a funny interaction 😂😭
before seeing the video:
if greate encoutner claydol were not so fun to use, it would still frustrate me to this day
Haha! Was such a strong engine eh! 👀
if you made this vid now dusknoir would be top 5
Great point 😂😭
I dont even know why they even print any item lock at all. There always seem to print some silly cards to support it which are never fun
As much as it pains me to say i think item lock is ok when done okay! Quaking punch and forest curse were a little to easy for my liking😂😭
@BurtsPTCG I think I'd like to see them try something like. Your opponent can only play 1 item card next turn on an attack. I feel like that atleast gives players that small fighting chance. There are definitely ways that they should probably balance a bit better tho
Ohh that's a very interesting idea actually! I like it!
is it bad that i remember every card that is mentioned while only playing around the gen4 era of the tcg?
Oh really? 👀😂
I was playing on shiftry era. I was just scooping up when they start doing that. Was waste of time ansi stopped playing ptcgo for years after that.
Yep that's exactly what i would too! No point in sitting there waiting 😭
Me playing lost march at locals 😅 against both peak ADP, giratina, and blacephalon sprinkled in.
Wow sounds like the gauntlet for sure! :p
My guy said never item lock with a single Energy... ever again... then stage 1 venomoth entered the field
I said basic pokemon with item lock 👀 otherwise banette counts too 🤣
My first pokemon tcg deck was miasma wind leafeon using Roserade to poison and confuse the enemy pokemon with a single rainbow energy. People hates that lol but then hypnoticic laser came out and my god did people hate that card.
What set was that? 👀 Sounds naughty!
@@BurtsPTCG miasma wind leafeon was from call of legends, energy signal roserade from HGSS unleashed, hypnotoxic laser was from plasma storm.
@moonlight2870 sounds like fun! 👀🙌
I joined playing the card game during ADP played a few matches against stopped till it rotated.
Oh god! Hated it that much? 😂😭
I hated Let Loose Marshadow so much. Marnie I could deal with because as a supporter you would know it was coming. But on a body in the bench it was so unreasonably busted. Thank God they banned it and haven't printed any effects like that ever since.
Hopefully it. Stays that way!
This was Great! You should do another :D
Ayo! Appreciate your support! 🙌Plentty of fun videos planned soon :)
before the switch to live i had a bad ass deck based on the archies ace in the hole jacob van wagner 2015 deck using wishi washi/blastoise that i would destroy the adp everytime
Ohh which wishiwashi? 👀
Ive made it to ADP, and wamt to use my previous format knowledge to make some guesses:
Junk Hunt Sableye
Pokemon Catcher: pre errata
Tropical Beach
N
Dark Patch
Ace Spec Comp Search.
Some solid guesses! 👀
baby Blacephalon could also live with the Giratina tyranny (I should know, I played it a ton ;P )
Haha i never considered baby clowns for this! I guess cause it stood toe to toe with adp and lucmetal i gave it a pass 👀😂
@@BurtsPTCG oh I meant it could stand its own as singleprizer against Giratina :P but there were also quite a bit of Blacephalon haters, yeah xP
Oh yeah of course without question 👀😂
It is kind of similar to be fair yes!
@@BurtsPTCG Im going to be so sad at the next rotation. 9/10 of my deck is about to fall off and Ill be super sad
Yeah that's a problem :( will have to find you a new one! 🙌
People just hate Lysandre because he's Lysandre. :P
(Just joking, I've never actually played the TCG; Though I honestly enjoy seeing Lysandre and would love to buy those cards)
Your in luck! Cause im tempted to do a whole video on Lysandre in the tcg cause he is unhinged 😂
they should make a format that removes all 2 prize card pokemon. The power creep with them make the game completely unrecognisable
Guess there's glc!
You didnt point this out, so im going to. Adp, iron hands ex, and double dragon energy will all exist in expanded.
This video was made before iron hands was printed, but that is a funny interaction for sure!
Wait they did an emergency rotation instead of just banning the Sableye?
Yep! Exactly that!
HAHAHA!
Are the problem cards actually cards like red card that reduce your opponent’s hand size?
There definitely not good eaither! 😭
Please talk about the regular hisuan zorowark, it's free energy use discards the opponests Pokemon in 1 turn
Just retreat or switch and your fine! 🙌
Don't you dare promise we won't be seeing trainer lock (item) turn 1 again. That is how you hex us.
I am confident! 👀🤣
Chaos Gym better be on that list.
👀
I need that Giratina deck for kitchen table
Table? Like glass covered so you can see it? :p
@@BurtsPTCG No Kitchen Table is a Magic the GAthering "format" that you play... at your kitchen table with friends.
🤣 There have been some dark times for pokemon 😭 Yugioh can be crazy though! Mystic mine springs to mind :p (i don't know that much about yugioh)
@@BurtsPTCG i mainly play with Altergeist, a deck dedicated to sabotaging anything your opponent tries to do. It's not meta but I have fun with it.
As long as your having fun that's the main thing! 🙌
Sounds fair! 🙌
this is the first i've seen of people hating lost thunder tina, and that was basically the height of when i played competitively. is this based on your opinion as well?
Guess my twitter is mostly uk/us based so maybe so 👀😂 people hated being on the receiving end of a good ol distortion door 😂
Aha! U wasn't to know especially as a kid :p
52 mins! i love some content lets go
All the content for you to enjoy! 🙌
I mostly hate VIP Pass since they nerfed the hell out of setup supporters like brigette
This is very true! Cards like Gloria or clavell just don't work cause you can't play them going first 😭
Path to the peak is mine because I just started playing
Good suggestion tbf! Think it's kinda needed for the format tho!
Format is pretty decent now yeah! Lost box sableye annoys me tho! 😂😭
Awesome video!
Thank you so much! 🙌
Why arent they called "steel" energy lol
That is a good question! 👀🤣 Couldn't tell ya!
I think Arceus VStar is OP. Maybe it’s just me…
Hmm maybe when it first came out! But now it feels a bit weak imo 😭
i reckon its the pot of greed
Heart of the cards gets me every time 😂
Three turns?!? That's so long.
(sorry I mostly play yugioh.)
Yugioh be crazy! 🤣
Most TAG TEAM GX cards tbh lol
That video is in the works 👀😂
@@BurtsPTCG lmao, alright! Those were dark times...
Iono better be on here (edit) nvm now im glad i joined the tcg scene recently and not back then holy hell lock out cities
👀👀
adp was fun tbh imo as annoying as it was. its a horroble take but i just thought that 3 legendarys as the art was so cool
Oh it was a stunning card for sure 🙌
Ahhh….memories
Indeed! Not nice ones! :p
@@BurtsPTCG true 😂
Sick video but I think the sound effects from different video games is a bit excessive
Appreciate the feedback! 🙏
Hypnotoxic laser and ADP. Both cards are cancer and made me quit the formats!
😭😭
Easy. The most hated pokemon card is Pot of Greed.
Pot of greed allows me to digiolve too so what's not to love! 🙌
Welder and silent lab.
Fantastic shouts actually!
ADP was game breaking
It was a bit of a beast!🙌
I personally just don’t like sableye from lost origin it’s such a good card it should be banned 🤷♂️
Edit: I’m being sarcastic
It almost made the list can't lie :p
@@BurtsPTCG honestly I hate it but I also can’t deny it being one of the best cards in the modern tcg game
@ilikecheese8126 oh yeah for sure its super strong!

Hau?
How?👀
Longform hotchoc content>>>
Aha! Thank you! You a fan of the longer videos? 👀
@@BurtsPTCG fan of it all, but longer videos are definitely something special. much love, you’re the man
Aww that's awesome! Appreciate all your support! 🙏
God i hate ADP
Was an absolute format warper!
