For those insisting yoga is necessary for their bodily health, my question is also “Why can’t you simply do stretching exercises? Why must it be yoga?” I can’t help feeling that there is an attachment to the allure of eastern mysticism behind the defensive posturing.

Thank you SO MUCH for bringing attention to this! So many Christians are deceived and think Yoga is harmless! When I was in college I took both a world religions class and a yoga class at the same time. I saw that Yoga was connected with Hinduism. I experienced so much spiritual warfare! I started doing it in college for my cross-country training. It never seemed overtly ‘spiritual’ to me. However years later I attended a class that was very spiritual and I went straight to a friend’s house afterwards and had him pray over me against whatever that was 😂
But I did go back to occasional yoga dvds that were ‘not spiritual’ until my little daughter began doing some of the exercises with me. Seeing her in these praying poses did not sit right with me, and soon after that I had some friends bring it up and confirm it’s part of the occult. He says he's not interested in the spiritual aspect... but in relation to your comment, he sits on the fence in nearly every argument, believes me to be too passionate about absolute truth regarding key issues and believes seeking harmony and love, (such vague terms!), will save the human race. I thought, like many Christians, that as long as I was doing it only health reasons & not as a religious practice, it would be OK. About three quarters way through the class, I became extremely nauseated & had to stop. I couldn’t figure out why. As I learned more about Yoga, I realized that it was probably the Holy Spirit trying to get my attention. I haven’t tried it since.

It took almost 3 years for me to quit, I was experiencing a lot of spiritual warfare. Through prayer, I was able to completely detach myself from that world. Thank you for shining a light on this. If a pose gives you a good stretch and you’re doing it for this purpose and not to worship another God I can see it’s a benefit. In fact you can do the same pose and use it to worship the Christian God. At the end of the day it’s your body doing some thing that’s not vulgar or sinful and it’s providing you with some benefit. I think that’s very Christian inherently. Self-care, self preservation, good health. Just put your mind in the right place when you do it. @BabySaverServant I understand that it’s very hard to stop doing the practice but I’ve come to believe and feel (ad many other converts) that you just cannot separate the spiritual practice of yoga from the physical…,it’s impossible when each posture is meant to invoke the spirit of the Devi/god/goddess (demon), the animal or even the action (as the Sun Sals are saluting a creation and the warrior series replicate a murder scene…..
Honestly, at first I thought you could separate the two, but I now know you can’t….it was a hard pill to swallow since my practice was not only a huge part of my life but yoga and the practice/lifestyle became my identity….I can only testify to the utter peace and feeling of freedom I have found since stopping the practice and giving my life to Jesus Christ……no anxiety, no anger, no worry, no more need to compete or to “gain”, and daily joy…..and my osteopath says my nervous system is no longer on “high alert” any more, my fascia is moving in places it was locked, ligaments and tendons are releasing…you would think doing ankle grabbing backbends and double legs behind the head would equal more open but, shockingly, the opposite is true!

@BabySaverServant I totally get what you’re saying….and I also thought I could separate the spiritual from the physical but, as I have experienced, you just can’t when you’re doing those postures….I’ve felt the difference….from an oppressive, competitive, “yoked” drive to do the practice and to move deeper/further into each of the Ashtanga series (I was in the middle of the 3rd series) to the freedom that, I believe, comes with not practicing paganism and idolatry through those postures.
It’s definitely been a transition….I was a gymnast before yoga and have tried to use those stretches and strength exercises instead while I’ve added some other great workouts (cardio mostly).
Also, the yoga led me down the wide path of occultism (as it does for most people) and I studied astrology/numerology, became Reiki attuned, started reading Oracle cards for people, practiced Mediumship, studied and became a certified Holistic Healer (did past life regressions/spiritual plane communication/meditation, etc), studied crystal healing, explored ayahuasca and psilocybin growing and ceremony (got some interesting testimonies from those experiences too) and all the while couldn’t find true peace.
I guess we all find our way in our own time, but I do like to share my testimony to anybody that wants to hear it as now I know where true strength and true peace comes from.
I pray for you my friend and thank you for responding and connecting! Peace and love to you! 😊

I pursued this goal for over a decade but l could never raise the $5000 for the course or secure a 9-5 job necessary to be available for the Friday night/all day Saturday and Sunday classes. This was intense for me. I can relate to almost everything said! I am from Southern California and practiced yoga and was also into the dance arts. Not to say that the dance arts is bad but that I used yoga to help supplement the stretching and exercising. I also struggled with anxiety and was driven away from Christianity in my young adulthood and pursued this idea of spirituality and God being energy and love and growing to attain this non-ego oneness enlightenment. I even started this very cultish Korean energy yoga called Dahnhak and was a huge practitioner visiting their retreat in Sedona many times. Unfortunately, down the road this way of thinking/ being left me open to spiritual warfare. I will stop there because it is almost indescribable but the important thing is that it exposed the truth that demons do exist and lead me to Jesus whom I had written off as another prophet. I repented with all my heart and handed myself over to him completely. He healed me then and told me to follow him. Of course, forever. But, it was still a long road of healing. I loved what she said about being so hungry for knowledge but how it pushed the bad out. The first person I spoke with on my worst horrific day was a Monsignor and he told me the difference with spirituality and Christianity is that "spiritual" people try to empty themselves while Christians want to completely fill themselves with the Holy Spirit. All of this happened a year ago and I should institutionalized after what I went through and the nervous breakdown I had afterwards and being filled with fear. I had no foundation and crumbled completely like a house of cards. Jesus has become my complete foundation. Even today I realized that he is constantly holding me up because he is my foundation and without him I would be back to where I was last year. But, he got me baptized in the Catholic Church, got me the best job I have ever had that pays way more than I ever have before, I'm living in this beautiful house 3 minutes from my church when last year I was a vagabond traveler, and I am discerning becoming a nun. There is nothing I want more than to be so close to Jesus now. He took me in like that and has been healing me ever since. I am even off my anti-depressants already. If anyone wants to encounter Jesus in the most intense way, go to Adoration at a Catholic Church and just sit with the Eucharist for one hour. You will see. The powerful and tangible spirituality the Catholic Church has is mind blowing. Because I have a spiritual sensitivity, my experiences are much more than most that have been Catholics all their lives. Plus, my hunger to learn everything about it brings me amazing gifts.
Also, during the part where she says how she goes to the church and everything suddenly clicked, I had to yell out a "Hallelujah" in my living room with tears in my eyes while holding my hand in the air towards the San Damiano Cross over my fireplace. My dogs thought I was nuts. I had the same experience on my worst day but after talking to the Monsignor I immediately put the radio in my vehicle on a Christian station and everything being preached and sung suddenly made absolute sense! I only listen to Christian radio stations and really don't listen to mainstream music anymore. It sounds so soulless now. Also, I have gotten a little too chubby living here in Texas now and want to get back into the gym. I was the same way about yoga. After all of the horror, I didn't want to touch it and saw it all as a slippery slope back to evil. But, my gym had a very non-spiritual yoga class I thought I'd do just for exercise, lengthening, and breathing. But, what she said in the video even about the poses meaning something made so much sense! So, now it is a big huge no for me. I'll follow Jesus's health plan instead: Walking, fasting, and praying.

I thank the Holy Spirit for bringing me out of that gate to hell that unfortunately most Americans still see as a healing positive thing.🙏

By the end of the school year I was having suicidal thoughts. I realized later the truth about yoga and meditation practices and I'm so grateful God has revealed this to me. Im not an expert in YOGA at all , never have done it , but i do practice meditation ,whenever i can to quiet my mind , because life is usually busy and training your mind you just become quieter whenever you want it can be extremely useful for concentration and for easing your tensions and extremely powerful ,for recharge your energies. Just something as simple and to sit on normal chair for 5 minutes and have deep breathing exercises can make a major difference and recharge your body.. Is not recommended to do it before going to sleep , because you will not longer sleep , if fully restored in energies. I also christian too.. And even though , never done Yoga , i can assure you ,
there is nothing to fear at all , about doing any mistakes.. if it was at all...there is a major missundestanding by Christians ,by Hindus , by All other organized religions you can name ,and also by Non religious movements too , and by New Age spiritual movements too.. missunderstandings about What Jesus really teach and promoted.. versus what Christians religions actually teach. In other words ,Jesus is much better than the organized religions created on his name . Say in other way , ,Jesus teachings and christianity as people know it , is not necessarily the same thing.
So will give you an example.. about what's the problem. Imagine @IRIS.. that you were a Major Dancer , who dance for a living. And you want to teach people how to dance , the you travel the world and create studios ,with your name , and while you are alive ,you teach people how to dance and is very successful.. But when no longer you are in this world , those that you put in charge of those studios ,instead of following your practices ,
of what you teach.. those managers ,that were supposed to teach people how to dance , what you wanted ,decide instead , to use the studios to worship you , to do tribute every week about your person. And additionally , the people in charge of your founded studios , hire Dancers ,that dance totally different and how you wanted people to do it. So this is the problems with organized Christian religions today.. and also others religions too.
Organized religions is more about control of population , using FEAR as a weapon of control you , don't do this or that because you will burn in fire for eternity.. Jesus never said anything like that. Jesus spoke ALL THE TIME.. about an un-conditional loving father, about forgiving those who try to chase you and harm you . IF you focus ONLY
in Jesus direct teachings ,in the bible ,the 4 gospels of Jesus.. you will see a pattern , of how Jesus repeated AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIn to NOT FEAR , to have no Doubts ,
To have unconditional love and TRUST in GOD , no matter how difficult things looks to be.
That by your Faith you will be saved. [Luke 7:50] .. Christianity as told by Jesus ,was all about developing an Unconditional love and Trust for GOD that doesn't wave. This unconditional trust ,Jesus called it Faith that move mountains. you could do anything. Jesus also told a LOT ,
something that is ignored frequently.. Jesus told.. TO NOT JUDGE.. That is to not put labels ,
on people or things.. like good /evil , Judgements create separation , between you and that other person or thing. Jesus was more for Unifying humanity , not about dividing . Reason why Jesus teach a lot forgiveness too. I advice you ,to check the book of Conversations with GOd..book1 , on youtube it will explain you what Jesus real message was, but that mosst people don't pay attention. and so Organized institutions , most of what they do is Worship the figure of jesus and the bible , but do not actually explain you ,that Salvation comes by your Faith , by your unconditional trust , unconditional love for GOD ,that Jesus was representing. And when you really Trust in someone , you know that person will not abandon you , and leave you alone ,when you more need it.. even if you mistakes . Good parents /or good friends are those that will support you no matter what mistakes you do , But if people can do that that are imperfect , and stand with you in good times and bad times ,imagine how much more God and Jesus could do? So you should never fear about GOD response for anything you did ,specially if you did not knew what it was. Life is a school and we are not born with a clear manual of what to do all the time. So if i was you , ill seek for alternative opinions about Yoga from Christians , so you get more points of view .However i really advice you ,to read a book with title [Conversations with GOD , book 1 ,by neal donald walsch..] , is online posted in youtube for free, it will explain you all this and a lot more. Specially how to easy learn to differentiate what Messages that comes from God or not. and how to know when you know.. And understand what works for you or not. and perhaps you can ask Directly God to explain you if Yoga is good for you or not. IF you believe God can respond to your direct questions , then it will happen to the same degree that you believe. IF you ask for prayers , is because you have doubts , about GOD.. Instead just learn to develop a relationaship with GOD... the best prayers are those of thanks giving for life ,and to be thankful everyday for all the things you appreciate in your life.

Yoga means "yoked with demons," and "we cannot drink of the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too." When I was 16 way back in 1971, I went through a severe trial with a mother who had become demon possessed from working the Ouija board (which I had turned away from, and refused to work with her).
I suffered a great deal at her hands, but it caused me to search for God. I had been an atheist, but my eyes were opened that if there's an evil force, there has to be a good force. I first read the Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita, but came up empty. There was nothing there, so then I went to a YMCA yoga class. We sat there in the lotus position with our fingers making the triple 6 illuminati hand gesture, chanting "Ohm," and the most overwhelming feeling of horror came over me. I knew it was wrong, and I got up and left. When I was 17 someone told me to read the book of John, and I then read all 4 Gospels in a row, and became a believer in Jesus Christ. I'm 68 now, there have been many struggles with the forces of darkness, but greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world!!!

My old Church's child worship was offering yoga for the kids to practice per the independent adult leadership looking after my child along with her daughter. My daughter told me this when I came to get her, and I asked the lady what was up with that. She defended it. ( This was in the house of Yahweh/Jesus on a Sunday, mind you, and without my permission. But I have trained my daughter since birth basically to reject and never practice meditation or yoga anywhere, and with anyone, and have had to fight off school and have her sit outside in the hall when they did it in elementary. It is everywhere.)
Needless to say, I got the pastor involved, and I was so shocked when this Assemblies of GOD pastor agreed it was ok, no worries, "it is only exercise, and you are wrong and making a big deal out of nothing". I couldn't believe a pastor of the Christian faith could be so ignorant of basic Hinduism/Idolatry/Paganism!
Well, then it got superheated. I was PISSED! I tried yoga awhile back, and felt like it was so creepy, even though the teacher was a lovely person. When I lived in El Lay, a yogi named Satchitdananda was all the rage. I got dragged by a friend to hear him speak, and it was so oppressive, so dark, even though he was very ‘peaceful’ and seemingly kind. His message of “many paths to one truth” directly contradicted the message of Jesus. There was always an aura of hidden agendas that never rang true with him and any other proponent of yoga. It is works-based.

I'm not making any of this up, its all in the Bible eventhough the Bible is a man made made up book. not saying that there isn't something out here that's a higher power that embellishes love, life, happiness, peace and tranquility bc I do believe there is, I just have done alot of research and now know why even as a child I had alot of questions about this religion and actually reading and not being bias I know now that catholicism isn't it.

At the time, I was a catholic and the yoga instructor would chant at the end of the class while we were in "corpse" pose. I felt very uncomfortable with the chanting and would quietly take my mat and leave until one night she whispered for me to stay. I did and as people were walking out, she asked me why I always left and I told her my religious background. She smirked and waved me away, I never returned to her or any other yoga class again. When I practiced yoga years ago, I liked the physical benefits but my teacher, who was into it body and soul, liked to read aloud at the end of every class, from a book written by a famous yogi. God wasn’t on my radar at that point in my life. I wasn’t seeking to know Him. And yet, the passages she read every week rubbed me the wrong way. They sounded hedonistic because they seemed devoid of caring about the suffering of others. The message was to be at peace regardless of the horrible injustices or cruelty in the world, and to accept immorality, criminality and the suffering of others as their “karma” and not feel compelled to help one’s fellow man. I’m paraphrasing but that was the gist. It bothered me and I told her. She didn’t understand, which itself was disconcerting.
She also revealed she was polyamorous, which confirmed how lost and misguided she was, by a religion that was immoral.
Fast forward a few years. Many people I knew were raving about the benefits of meditation to relieve stress and improve productivity. I went to a weekend seminar with a well known TM (transcendental meditation) teacher. The people struck me as pretentious and sad. I got the sense that if someone had said, “Jesus is my savior,” they would have chuckled or rolled their eyes. I never went back.

From decades of experience: The physical side of yoga is very helpful. Guidance like breathe, be in the moment etc. is helpful. That's largely what Americans encounter in a yoga class, taught by other westerners, who are not Hindus. I think that philosophies that tell you to live above your desires and feelings ARE harmful. Some Indian Gurus and a particular prominent yoga teacher, now deposed, are not good people. In my personal experience, most of the yoga teachers where I live were not sane. But the physical side of yoga is awesome. So let's figure out how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

You can't separate it. Yoga was made for Hindu gods and will always be tied to them. It's an unconscious sinful practice.

I am so excited that Rae is talking about Thoreau and Emerson!! I teach them in my American Lit. class every single fall and have my students study how they rejected biblical truth and embraced pantheism (panetheism...), new thought, etc. We compare their writings to Progressive Christian claims and texts. It's such an eye-opener for my students year after year. Emerson's Divinity School Address is particularly relevant in today's cultural climate. Anyway, this made me so happy! I'm gonna include clips from this conversation in my class next fall. Thank you!

I grew up in HIndu majority country where I rarely see people doing yoga. Christians here in the west are out of mind.

I have been practicing pranayama yoga for much of my adult life. I came to Christ a year ago, and have diligently been studying the Bible. I know there is a lot of criticism on this, but I see so many parallels between the ethics of yoga and Christs's teaching. For instance, love thy neighbor like thyself. Trrating ourselves with forgiveness and kindness so we could share that with others. When God created Adam he breathed life into him, that's the spirit and energy utilized in the practice. And when you say namaste, I know it talks about divinity in oneself, but Jesus says when we care for our fellow man we are caring for him. He says when you give alms to others you are feeding and clothing him, so my inrerpretation is that we all have divinity within us - not that we are divine, but that God dwells in all of us. I am really considering going into a Christ centered yoga instruction course. And I am so very much trying to understand people's viewpoints on this. I see the parallels, this guest sees the deception.

Exactly, there are many similarities in yogic philosophy and Christianity. It teaches you to get in touch with the divine and does not name it, and teaches you to be a clean and pure person.

Rae is so darling. She has a sweet spirit and exudes the Holy Spirit. I'm so glad y'all talked about how they try to redeem this stuff.... it's like saying Christian Wicca... which is so so wrong. Thanks for posting Becket!

Blah blah blah. Keep your jesus. Hinduism makes you face the demons within, and that is very uncomfortable! Hinduism forces you to be responsible rather than handing over things to some God. Yes it can be very uncomfortable to face yourself, look yourself in the mirror, face your karma. It is not for the lazy. What sone do, is not yoga!!!! For yoga, you get up at 4am, do pancha kryia cleansing process, recite a mantra and do your asanas. ALL THIS IS DONE BY TRUE HINDUS 90 MINUTES BEFORE SUNRISE. DID YOU EAT SATVIK FOOD ONLY? NO!!!
