- In this lesson we'll write some music using natural minor first, then we'll tinker with harmonic and melodic minor.
If you enjoy this lesson, I've got a lot more over on Patreon! It's not a donation site, it's a whole archive of lessons I've filmed over the past 3 years. And I'm still adding more! I also do a weekly live Q&A that looks just like this.

This scratch paper is really handy for this kind of stuff

Your youtube lessons are so so helpful!! I'm convinced, I'll be looking into buying some of your content! Thanks for all your hard work! Keep it up!
I don’t actually play the guitar but i always watch your videos because you have such a soothing vibe and u make music theory and composition so enjoyable 👌🏼 keep it up ❤️
Awesome info!
Doing God's work, thank you, Scott
I just cant get my head around this level of content being free. You are a true master and teacher, which is way harder than being a master musician. Thanks a lot
Thanks! Keep in mind I have hundreds of videos available on Patreon, too! $11.67/mo

Great videos, keep it up !
God damn that bass line is insaaane! I'm a guitar player too but just like you I enjoy playing bass so much. It's so fun!
I have been a member of Scott's Patreon group for over a year. It is easily the most beneficial and fun thing I have done to support my guitar, bass, and keyboard learning journey.
Thanks Jeff!
Same. So worth it!!!! Best money I’ve ever spent
Thank you!! I just gained a few levels watching all your videos.
The guitar cam makes it real easy to follow you,
That was a nice little bass line for sure!
The “jarring” chords really reminded me of som me Tim Reynolds stuff
Lot's o'o Love 2 u Maestro !
AS soon as I have a lil' more moneys, I'd be be stoked to join your (paying) classes. ❤❤🎉❤🎉🎉🎉
I'd love you to do a logic tutorial or three!
This is the kind of channel I feel like supporting.
The only person on the internet that makes music make sense. I wish you were on here when I'd started playing guitar I probably would have been something
It’s not too late
It’s never too late. Man, I’m 66. Been learning 7 years and getting pretty good at it.
Would be awesome to have a simple app with the circle-shape. Set the rootnote and have the microphone listen to what your playing, just to fiddle arround and get an understanding of what is going on
I love you i love you i ove you...can you feel IT!? I AM VIRTUALLU HUGGING YOU NOW AND EVERYTIME YOU THINK OF THIS. THANKYOU. so helpful im teary on my couch in my living room to finally find thisand understand. Thankyou 🙏🏽
My second video of you. You really shook something loose in my head about theory i have been missing!
Also i like that you show some choices and then you just pick one and execute it. Pumping out those songs😅
Thanks man, subbed.
Oh wow
This feels like watching Bob Ross improvising one of his beautiful paintings. Just have fun and make a wholesome little song
This is so spot on lol
Best teacher for guitar on RUclips BY FAR!!!! I wish he lived near me to do in person lessons with him, he has such a gentle demeanor and style, the best!
Wonderful piece of time. Thanks 😊
I have watched many youtube guitar videos and these are by far the best. It’s like he is reading my mind.
Cool! Maybe you could put an octave effect in your guitar to teach about bass lines in the guitar camera. It’s not a perfect bass sound but it could do the trick. Nice content!
Sometime I totally could! I’ve got a couple nice bass lessons on my Patreon too
You are THEEEE best teacher I have ever encounter. Thanks for sharing your passion and knowledge in a simple to understand lessons. Keep up the great work bud. :)
IM JUST NEW PLAYING MY GUITAR AND I LEARNED A LOT FROM YOUR CHANNEL YOU ARE GENIUS AND BRILLIANT I SALUTE YOU SIR!!!! FROM PHILIPPINES 🎸🇵🇭♥️😇🙏🏽
this is just awesome, thx for posting this.
This was amazing to watch, thank you so much. The right amount of theory and practical.
you're awesome. can't wait to watch your other videos.
Scott, I first found you a couple of years ago and immediately loved your innovation with the half dissolved "Marty McFly" fretboard cam as well as your approachable style. I think its brilliant enough allowing us to see behind the hands but this new setup you have now is AMAZING!! Well, its new to me. Your ability to live switch all the cameras and layer the image is superb. Really excellent tools properly executed. I hope you patent that software somehow and make enough money to buy a real 58 LP! (If you're into that sort of thing) These two vids have all that PLUS inspiration to just write music, even in little bits to take the pressure off "writing a good song" start to finish. You've inspired me to just play and have fun and not load it up with expectations. Thanks so much! Here's to filling the boneyard. Cheers!
The scratch paper thing is very cool, cheers for that
Great lesson Scott!
Thank you!
Awesome content Scott, thank you! "Hot bodies in motion" are great also - just discovered it. All the best
Very good examples, great video. But you showed how to choose a chord, but what about the structures? I mean intro, verse, chorus, beidge, break, drop, breakdown and so on...
Choosing 3-4 chords is not such a difficult matter, but how to connect it with the next part? How can I make a full-fledged track out of this?
The more you do the basics like this, the easier it is to figure out that stuff. I think my more recent writing stream shows a more complete structure and how I got there!
great! you should make this a series on songwriting and the different types and aspects of songwriting, not follow up videos but self contained 101s. Really eye opening since few really delve into the mysterious world of creating music
Thanks so much 🙏🌹
Another 👍👍 Thanks!
Scott is NASTY on the bass!!!
Ok, so I like the idea of tossing in that e7 In the Cord progression sounds nice. So, I've been coming up with ideas for years, but really didn't know what I was doing. Just playing by ear and coming up with ideas for songs. Eight years ago I was noodling and came up with a i vii vi vii Cord progression, bm. I had no idea what a cord progression even was at the time. I do now in part because of you and studying the circle of fifths. Anyway my girlfriend at the time was blown away by what I played. I came up with really good lyrics, immediately, It just came right out. Problem is, I got stuck. Now, I'm wanting to finish the song. My question is this. I'm considering tossing a g7 into the mix. Why does it sound so dramatically different, when played in different positions. I tried the first position and the 7th, they don't even sound like the same cord. I'm confused because I don't notice that big of a difference between an A Cord say at the second fret and an A cord played at the fifth. Just wondering. Ok I might have asked to early, lol. You explained it. Its a different voicing. Thanks again, your very helpful.
Thank you for such a great video. I have a question: Do you have p bass or jazz bass?
It’s kind of both. It’s called the Music Man Caprice. Got both a p bass pickup and a j bass pickup. Often called a PJ bass
hey! you have a good voice, man.
Hey thanks! I sing backup for Hot Bodies in Motion
Lets music write 2
touché
Your sessions are so well thought out. I love the fingerboard on the guitar too. My question would be about some of the lesser used chords in popular songs, ie the 11. Are they simply used as passing chords or can they fulfil a bigger purpose?
Gotta get on the next live one - such a healthy chat and excellent topics! As for the perfectionism/fear question, a little analogy maybe? Did you ever build legos as a kid? Did you ever go through the feeling when you're following along with an instruction book/kit and you realize you're missing a piece and suddenly the whole plan and project goes to shit? What about when you're just sitting in front of a big box of mixed up pieces, and you're like "that one's cool, I don't know what I'm building yet, but let's see what happens" and eventually you look at the thing, and it's weird and not exactly finished but not exactly dysfunctional, and you're just really proud of it because it's yours and you enjoyed the process of building it piece by piece? I think that's Scott's approach to music here. The theory is your framework to play and think as loosely as possible without getting frustrated, and with each building block you add, your brain will probably think of something cool to throw on top of it. Another great recommendation: watch that Beatles documentary, "Get Back." It was a revelation in the songwriting process for me and demystified a lot of things.
Yeah. It's one thing if you're building a lego creation for a competition, but it's another thing entirely to explore which parts go together in fun ways. You need to do a lot of exploring to get good at writing music
Ahhhh, these sessions are so good! Scratch that. These sessions are... 'kinda fun' (to the power of ten)! I hate to be the person who asks this question, but: what are those unusual-shaped guitars hanging in the background?
39:08 mmmm slap a da bass man ❤
Couldn't join the livestream. About to join this class and take in as much as I can. Thank you! This kind of videos rock!
Btw, muppet moment at 6:03
what is the software in the video that is being used to detect the notes being played and show them on both the scale wheel and the guitar neck?
I made it
I have this melody in my head but I'm having a hard time figuring out what chord to put it over. How do you figure out what chord go over it? Is it just whatever chord has at least one note you are singing? I know there's automatic software that let you sing and it puts the right chord over it automatically, but would like to know how it worked.
That is a great start. If you’re jumping from one note to the next, those could be different chords OR two notes from the same chord. If you’re walking through the scale (like C D E) you could just play a C chord which will sound good on the C and E, and create mild tension going through D
What program do you use to ping the notes on the fret board demo that you utilize?
It’s something we made
Why keep the guitar cam software a secret? I thinks that software could help a lot of people.
Just for now!
It’s also something I’ve spent a lot of time working on, and I’m not a wealthy person, so I can’t necessarily afford to just give it away! It’s not an “off the shelf” software
@@ScottPaulJohnson Are you the creator of the software? Selling it will make you a wealthy person. I'd buy it at a reasonable price for sure.
@@joshbodwell8186 It's not quite in a sellable package yet, but thats the goal - thus, the secret for now
Funnily enough, there kind of were Major Key and Minor Key people lol. The modes are named after regions of the ancient Mediterranean. The jealousy of the Aeolian people about the Ionian people's V7 chord, no, you're right, that probably didn't happen. I love that anthropological analogy, though.
It helps me remember
Also I’ve heard that about the modes, but I’ve never really looked into it.
@@ScottPaulJohnson it's basically another good dinner table useless bit of information. I was teaching my dad the modes and he said, "I dunno, son. It's all Greek to me." ... Proper Dad joke right there.
These are absolutely amazing, thank you for the well thought out and easy to follow visual tools they were really helpful for someone like me! Keep up the amazing work!
