It is my understanding that this verse has been sung at the end of Mass on public occasions in France even though it is not a part of the Mass liturgy, and that it is sung 3 times in honor of the Church, the Army, and the State. In Gounod's setting, the first time the verse is sung a cappella for the Church, with a wind band accompaniment for the Army, and with full orchestral accompaniment for the State.
