Love this game. Great review. It's been on our table, in constant replay ever since we got it a month ago. Still haven't played the Firelands expansion yet, but we're completely satisfied with the base game at the moment. As for the HMS Beagle track, I don't see it as we're 'racing against' Darwin... I feel more like we're trying to keep up with him and if we're lucky (strategic) we can get ahead of him. 😅
I really enjoy this one, and found it to be a close competitive game. I do struggle with the solo mode rules for some reason though.
Me too Morgaknight; I haven't tried the solo mode, but I don't find it especially tempting either. I am quite keen to play again and maybe try out some of the expansion bits too!
I just picked up the retail version and the automa plays like a player, picking optimal spots per worker, making optimal decisions . That makes it a bit harder to manage, but it is worth it.
I liked the review. This is one of my favorite games at the moment. But there were some issues with your rules overview.
1. You made it sound like only one worker can be placed in the top spots of the main diaries (with the large, round magnifying lenses). I don't know if that's because you think that's the rule (which it isn't - any number of workers can be placed in those spots), or you just didn't explain it very well.
2. Your explanations of the distinctions (you called them veterancies?) for the Academy area are wrong. The silver distinction simply allows you to purchase another seal, but not with an additional cost, just at regular cost. The +1 is indicating another seal, not an added cost. The gold distinction does not let you buy an additional seal; it instead provides a -1 cost to each of the seals you purchase.
3. The reserve area for holding objectives can hold any 2 objectives; it doesn't have to be one of each color.
Hi Michael; thanks for the positive feedback and the clarifications. These mistakes are definitely a symptom of leaving it too long between playing the game and filming my reviews! I've edited the video to take out some sections in order to avoid any misunderstanding (unfortunately the RUclips editing tool only allows for the cutting out of material and cannot add or change anything). I find these overview sections challenging because I'm a games teacher and I always go into too much detail. It starts to feel too much like an instructional video when it's really just supposed to give a flavour of the mechanisms; One day I might strike the right balance!

2. The gold distinction wax seal also give you a discount on the PLACEMENT of the seal on your personal board (whereas all the previous discounts only apply to the purchase of the wax seals from the scroll on the main board).
@GKEK Actually, that's not true. All seal discounts can be applied to both the scroll cost and the placement cost. The discount applies to the combined cost. It can even apply to the extra cost from the time penalty when playing the Fireland expansion.
