Face To Face With The Actual Surgeon General

- I was lucky enough to sit down with Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy at the White House in Washington DC to discuss his job, America’s medical goals, and our nation’s emergence from COVID-19. Having served under the Obama administration and the Biden administration, Dr. Murthy is as experienced and savvy as it gets with battling medical misinformation. We dove deep into mental health and battling loneliness, which has been around long before the pandemic and unfortunately rears its head in many forms. We also spoke at length about the harsh reality of physician burnout.

Jjjjj wow just noticed lol
Just noticed yesss
His voice is like a voice in those guided meditation speakers.
Agreed he has a really soothing voice.
The way he became Surgeon General is by his hypnotic voice
This comment made me chuckle. lol.
Almost like he might have ancestors in India.
His voice pattern and his tone reminds me of Obama.
But he's right, mental health is extremely important.
"You can be a powerful source of healing in someone else's life. You don't have to have a MD or RN attached to your name." Powerful statement. I love that. Just be present or show up for someone. Making ourselves available to help others cope in these times in turn helps us cope with our own problems. Also, remember, the little things we do will go a far way.
I was working for the Commission on Aging in the county I live in. 2 months after another training session when they introduced hands only CPR, a 27 year old collapsed in my home. I immediately dialed 911 on speaker phone and told the 911 employee that I needed an ambulance and did not need resuscitation instructions that I had already started. As I was doing chest compressions I explained that I was fully trained and just get help here quickly. This was the only time I had ever needed to use life-saving techniques and after 2 minutes I got the young man back with a pulse and shallow breathing. Everyone out there listening, get trained in CPR. It saves lives.
Good work, Hugh! Good recommendation, as well!
I just got my card from a online test I took at a local Security Guard Service. But nothing is better than a hands on class which I will take on my own thank you for saving a life.

Thank you
I thought the solution to all the world’s problems was CHEST COMPRESSIONS... Looks like the surgeon general is too cool for school

Wow. I love how he spoke of mental health. It's always nice to see the medical field advocate for a more inclusive practice to include mental health professionals. He put things so eloquently, and I love his goals.

At the start of 2020 I'd been going through some stuff and I was going to start going to social groups, fitness classes, as a means to make friends and feel happier. Then effing covid hit and I couldn't do any of that. And it's really taken its toll and made me realise just how lonely I am. I literally have like no friends. Some acquaintances yes, but no real friends. That's been the hardest thing for me through this pandemic, being so acutely aware of how lonely I am. Thankfully I have a great and supportive family, but my closest family is 200 miles away, so they could only support me virtually. But I am thankful that I have my family, I don't think I'd still be here now without them, quite frankly.
Love that you guys are shedding light on mental health issues. Such an overlooked aspect of medicine
I agree with Dr. Murthy, we should take breaks; have time to check, talk and listen with the people who cares for you the most and vice versa. Also, we really really change our mindset about mental health- our society thought if you have depression or other mental health issues “it’s all in the mind” “get over it” and etc.. which it’s sad.
Mental health issues doesn’t choose any people to experience it whether you’re young or old; well privileged or not; Even the health frontliners experience it too.. they are also a human beings who experience burn out, exhaustion, depression and anxiety..
F.Y.I: the way Dr. Murthy answered your questions makes me comfortable and understand very well.

Thank you for opening the mental health conversation. The more we talk about it the more comfortable people will be expressing that they are experiencing it. Great interview!
So happy to hear Dr. Murthy talk about mental health and give it the importance it deserves.
I'm glad to see them address mental health so heavily. This is a topic that seemed to be put on the back burner for so long but I'm seeing becoming increasingly more prominent. I see people discussing access to services and lack of coverage. Unfortunately, this is a part of the issue for people to get the assistance they need. If I may get in my soap box.... If you are struggling to find a provider, take the time to reach out to your insurance company and complain. There are so many issues in the relationship between insurance companies and mental health providers. One of the biggest is reimbursement rates. Many insurance companies reimburse so low to providers that they can't afford to have too many clients with x, y, or z insurance AND keep their doors open so they are forced to make the tough decisions to only be able to have a set number of people with that insurance. Working in mental health requires a masters degree but insurance companies do not reimburse enough for people to survive on their wages and pay back the crippling debt of getting an advanced degree. I've seen people turn away from the field for other work because they couldn't make ends meet. Until insurance companies take mental health seriously or we get universal health care where mental health workers are fighting the government for livable wages instead of a for-profit insurance company we will continue to see a shortage of available help.
If you are struggling with your mental health, keep fighting for what you need; it will be worth it in the end. ❤️
Great questions Dr Mike! You should interview more people of equal calibre. Love your 'listening nod' as well.
