  • 1986 The Shell House in Bournemouth, this was a popular place to visit, someone had spent a lot of time creating this, sadly another building that has been demolished and replaced with a block of flats, if it looks a bit dull it was December

I absolutely loved this place as a kid. Wonderful memories - sad it's no longer there

Thank you so much for posting this! Such happy memories of the shell house, must have been there hundreds of times as a kid growing up in Bournemouth, talk about memory lane! Brilliant stuff, it was a sin that they knocked this place down....

Just found this online and was really glad to see it. I visited the Shell House back in 1982 and was saddened to hear it had been demolished. It was quite a unique place. I only have a few faded photos of it, so it was really nice to see it again in all its splendour. Great memories for you too with your lovely family. Thanks so much for posting it.

Building developpers knocked it down and had the cheak to name the luxury flats 'The Shell House' although there are no shells anywhere... it was us as kids that nicknamed it the shell house... But it was the owners that sold it for a small fortune knowing it was to be knocked down, because only developers could afford the asking price... what a sin and all in the name of money. The local council should have put a preservation order on the garden at least...
A 2 bedroom luxury flat (I must admit the block of flats does look nice) in the Shell House sold for £400 in February 2015 www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-49180103.html

You're absolutely right: a preservation order should been imposed, and by applying a small charge to visit the garden the council could have partly recouped any compensation that they would have had to pay the owners. This place was an absolute treasure. Here as elsewhere,
"market forces" have destroyed something irreplaceable.
