It’s summer 2023 as I write this, and I drove along many of those roads yesterday, along the cliff tops, passing where the shell house used to be, and through the town centre (where you can still drive), and other side roads. Many things exactly the same, but others so different. Over 40 years have passed already since that was filmed, and it’s fascinating to think that this film in decades to come will become a rare an important piece of Bournemouth historic reference for future generations. Just as film of Bournemouth in the twenties, thirties and forties etc is to us now.
Amazing footage. The roads didn't seem to be so clogged up with traffic back then and there seemed to be so many more places to park on the roads. What a difference 42 years has made and not really for the better I'm inclined to say.
I watched this yesterday (through my TV, so couldn't comment). Fascinating to watch! I always enjoy old footage and photos of Bournemouth, but the 'later' images, 70s-80s are of great interest. I was in my teens in 1981 and spent a fair amount of time around the Bournemouth & Boscombe town / seafront area. Still live in Bournemouth and footage like this reminds even more of what's gone from my home town. A real pleasure to see this, thank you.
Lovely to come across this. I spent a week in Bournemouth with three of my friends in July 1981 after we bunked off the last week of school! We camped by the airport and drove into town every day and spent our time on the beach and on the pier playing the amusements. So many happy memories. Thank you.
Better days and not just because we were young back then. Social media platforms fool people into thinking today's society is better when in cold reality it isn't.
I was there last weekend, loved seeing the area, miss the Belvedere Hotel, had some great stays there, heard about the fire in June, shame. If you have any film of it when it was running, it would be great to see again. Thanks for showing, oh and great cars back then.
Iit was a sad day when they knocked it down hell of a lot of work went into it .my my mate said to me when he got his first car in 84 a vauxhall Viva he was going to wrap it in mothballs and leave it in his garage and he did and he sold it 3yrs ago for a shit loeds just took me bk looking at the cars this is real history brilliant stuff .✌️
Obviously this was to view the sights of Bournemouth, not to look at the cars, as virtually all of them were everyday/common-sight back then. Today they now add to it. Almost like forward thinking.
It breaks my heart what the rubbish local council has done to Bournemouth in the last few decades pedestrianising Boscombe and the square. They turned the town in to a dump, they should have their pensions taken off them.
How lovely Bournemouth was then apart from the flyover at the Bournemouth Pier that was inevitable I suppose this video was made before the greedy eyesore specialists came along to ruin the town just look at the latest eyesores I.E.the Hampton Hilton the Flats at Boscombe where the water's edge was how do they get away with it and then there's the old Beales dept store mess and the redundant cinemas in Westover road what have they got planned for that ? all I have to say to the BCP coucil is Thanks for turning Bournemouth into a Super dump. and as far as the destruction of the Beautiful Shell garden and replacing it with more eyesore flats for the rich and greedy so to whom it may concern on the BCP city planning dept please do one and let someone with an artistic flare take over and put the wow back into my once beautiful seaside town and pleas god help you when revamp Boscombe you couldn't even get Castle point built properly the idiot that designed that car park forgot that the existing car park was just tarmac and agricultural "pig farm land" and they never even pile drived it before they built just a few sections of car parks that are not even rain proof at the 1 floor level what an economic disaster is that especially as the shop are closing with the present online shopping taking over Ps please tell us what you have planned for Bournemouth Westover road and Boscombe mire eysores
I'm going to have a very sad moment here, I would like to know what car this is? To me, the wiper arms are set up for a left hand drive car. Normally of a right hand car the wiper blade you can see would normally be on the left of the shot, wiping from left to right so not to have half the ark in the driver view. On right hand drive cars the passenger should have half the ark and the driver having a clear view... yous who drive in the UK have a look at your car and you should see what I mean.
I would say that car is a Citroen gs. based on the style of door mirror, the rectangular grille in the centre top of the dashboard, the black windscreen wipers and the shape of the doors seen briefly via the reflection in the door mirror. If you are sad, then I am worse lol. I remember driving most of these cars in the early eighties as an apprentice mechanic. I dislike modern cars.
@@catchit9794 Thank you for your reply member of the sado club like me. I'm with you regarding modern cars. I must admit I drive a Mk4 Mondeo which is a "Mile Muncher", but my next car will be one where you open the bonnet and can see your feet; Mk1/2 Escort with Plugs and Points... Who remembers those?
@@richardlawrencesmith wow, a pre electronics escort. you have taste sir! My budget doesn't run to the price of one of those beauties :( But I recently sold my overly complicated 2 year old car because even to change the clock involved delving into the onboard computer and faffing about. (I'm 55, and don't think you should need a computer to tell you the time in a vehicle tbh.). I bought a 1999 Renault Megan coupe with 41,000 miles in near mint condition for under £200. retro motoring with the worthwhile mod-cons (including a sunroof!).I would love to go back in time in this video and buy one of those Rover sd1 when it was new. Ahhh, nostalgia eh?

Thx for the memories. Used to live in Southbourne now in Australia. I miss Bournemouth.

Another great piece of history. Thank you

You did the right thing by getting out.
Half the people at the Lansdowne area are African and Asian now.
As a youngster lived round the corner from the shell house, spen many happy hours there
Many happy memories of Bournmouth, thank you for putting this video on here.
So many British cars on the road still, in 1981......fabulous !! 👍

1981 Superb! loving the cars that were about back then. ☺
Brilliant! Even before the BIC was built! Thanks. :)
Brilliant! I live in and love Bournemouth,so interesting to see how some bits are exactly the same others not so much,I miss the shell house.
So good to have this, thank you, thank you, thank you! Its priceless!

The music makes this sound 70 years old....
Solid. I was born in 81 at poole and been in this area for 34 years, this is awesome m8 👍. Why can't the roads be like that now 😭
Because there are lots more people and everyone drives!
Great cars, no litter!
An important historical document.
Video recorders were very big and very expensive in 1981.
Not many people were doing this back then. Have a loom at the Bedford video shot the same way in 1985
Oh the memories...Amazing. Thanks for posting.
ah it was so beautiful then....just before i moved here.......good to see the old baths.

Seems strange with the Wessex way not yet built.
I use to love shell house 🏡
The Shell House was demolished in the 1990s. Now a block of very nice flats.

Wonderful video! Whats the first tune on there - its fabulous!
Thanks for the ride. What are you driving?
so dash cams have been available since 1981!
Two people have no soul. Great footage
3 now!
Who cares!!!! Used to wheel my baby girl (now 30 years old!) passed this wonderful memory. Grateful for this 🙏
