- Man of Poole. An award winning song about the loss of Poole as a small fishing town. Written around the ship dogs locally know as "Poole and Portlands" that later became the Labrador breed in the UK and the Newfoundland breed in the US.

Well done Gordon. Great song.
born in poole hospital 1942 remember the old poole very well left in1961 miss it but every thing changes, very good video and music.
Great song from a great songwriter. Creates a vivid picture even without the photos x
Wow, such an emotional song and fantastic pictures of the past. Memories of stories told to me about fam8ly members from those times were instantly brought back to me watching and listening to this. Thank you.
I moved to Poole in 2014. The old photos are amazing. The town is so different today, I would've loved to see the old ships docked up along side the Quay.
They ruined it ... :(
Love this. Although not from Poole myself I love to visit as my ancestors were 18th C Poole-Newfoundland merchants. One of them, Benjamin Lester, owned the Antelope pub that's still there today. 🍻
Certainly is - you must visit .... see here on Google Maps. www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.7128951,-1.9882102,3a,75y,291.97h,100.71t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1swtkuZAugF7YrKPTR4Aq6dQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656. Out of Order have played in the pub too :-)
Having lived in Poole since 1955, I can relate to this beautiful written and sung song. The coal conveyers scared me to death when I was nipper and seeing the changes over the years have honestly brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for the wonderful post.
Oh I'm so pleased and I know this will make my Dad feel very happy
Oh I'm so pleased and I shall pass this on to my Dad as I know he will feel super happy ❤
It’s amazing to see what poole quay looked like years back I use to work at the fish and chip shop along it thanks for the video 🙂
I can proudly say this is my Dads song that he wrote and sung. Apparently its picking up some interest - share away and I'm so pleased I can pass onto him these beautiful comments ❤
Wonderful video showing the passage of time and accompanied with a great shanty, thank you for posting. I remember the harbour from 1944 onwards, I was last back there in 2017
Brilliant, beautifully written Sea Shanty about my family’s home town of Poole’s fishing history, and the Newfoundland Dogs, known as ‘Poole and Portland’ locally, and the ensuing changes in the town! So glad I’ve just found this!👍💖😊
I’m nfld breed (linthorne) by way of dorset, im glad to find it too lol👏🏻
I shall pass through the beautiful comments to my Dad ❤
What a Great song of old Poole
Brilliant song and video
Thank you Alisa...
my ancestor as irish diaspora arrived in nfld, on the ship records he seems to have come from dorset via a ship of benjamin green.
Anyway there are only abt 250 ppl with my name today. dorset had taken us in from erin/n ir(i hear in the 1800s there were many n irish and norfolk there too?) I’m enjoying learning about dorset who adopted us before here. We settled in a small fishing outport and stayed near the water to this day

Random pop up on RUclips but very glad I watched. Living in Bournemouth and only going to Poole for the motorbikes, I'd often wonder what it was like back then...👏👏👏👏👏👏 Beautifully put together and a lovely thing to watch with a lump in my throat 😊 Thank you 😇😚😇

Not forgetting the history of 'The Black Dog' in Weymouth.
The only Black Dog I know of in Weymouth is a pub. Enlighten us.
Does anyone have access to the text of this song to give to my Ukrainian guest to make it easier for him to understand the words?
I can try to see if my Dad has them to hand however he has been writing music for easily 40 years so it may take a while!
Thank you!
