  • This is my jazz dance choreography to the song "Cool" from the Broadway musical West Side Story - although this music version is a concert arrangement by Dave Grusin.
My choreography is influenced by that of original West Side Story choreographer Jerome Robbins, but I do feel that I have enough of my personal approach in it to make it my own.
The piece debuted at the 2002 Gypsy Awards Show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Los Angeles, honoring tap dancer Gregory Hines and film star June Haver. I was thrilled that Gregory Hines sought me out after the show to tell me that he was impressed with the choreography!
Here the piece is performed in 2016 by my dancers from Shenandoah University/Virginia, where I was Visiting Associate Professor of Jazz Dance from 2013-2016. The dancers did a fine job in finding the rhythmic punch of the music and the choreography, and contrasting that with long, smooth movement stretches.

Thanks so much. Yes, that's how I often work, setting the movement to closely reflect the rhythmic patterns in the music. And then to manipulate the groupings in a way that unfolds with ease.
