  • Our first ocean crossing in the 2nd half of the GLYWO around the world rally will be from New Zealand to New Caledonia. Because of an expected pause in the wind we see an opportunity to make an in between stop on Norfolk Island, Australia.
    In this video we’ve been testing wireless intercoms and microphones of :

    I'm watching this video after a day at the Multihull Boat Show in LGM and a test sail on the O55 with superb sailing conditions, and I can only say: Wow! What a beautiful boat you own! It's even more incredible "in real life" than in your videos. Thank you for taking us along on your travels. You are great brand ambassadors for Outremer.

      We’ve only seen the 52 as work in progress in January but she looked very similar to the 55. We’ve got a lot of 51’s in the rally and they don’t look bad at all but the 52 still is a major step up.

      Will let you know as we’ll just use it until it breaks. In very dynamic circumstances you have to think of securing it too as it might fall off. In the dark we just put the headlight with elastic band on top of it

    We had our heart set on a FP Tanna 47 but are now leaning towards a Outremer 52. As a complete novice, do you reckon the 52 is too much of a handful as a first step into the sailing world? Love your channel. Groete van Kaapstad

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  Год назад +2

      We’ve sailed quite a bit on a saona 47. It needed a lot of extra controls on top of the standard to make it easy to sail. We haven’t sailed on an O52 of course but after seeing the setup I would expect it’s easier to sail than the Saona/Tanna. In GLYWO we have participants on a 5X without prior sailing experience that are now halfway around the world. Main issue when choosing a bigger and/or faster boat seems to be a conservative way of deploying the sails until you build more experience

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  Год назад +1

      In 2017 we were terrified to switch from a lagoon 39 to a 52 but after 2 weeks it already felt like it was easier to sail, also because of the increased motion comfort.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  Год назад +1

      Depending on what you plan to do it might make sense to train on manoeuvring in port before departure but this might be true for all boats you choose. On the positive side the O52 or other performance cruisers will allow you to sail much better in much more circumstances than the FP. The FP isn’t that bad downwind but upwind there is plenty of room for improvement (have a look on our Heineken regatta movie on the Saona in 2020 😎)

    did you get rid of your Wingaker ? or do you still use it ? is it good/bad ? any issues ?

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  Год назад

      The idea of the Wingaker is not too bad but on our ARC almost all of them were torn. Much happier now with a strong smaller normal symmetrical one and a bigger A2. We can leave the symmetrical one on in a squall as well.

    How much for the boat?

  • @deerfootnz
    @deerfootnz Год назад +1

    It's still cyclone season. Why are you sailing into the cyclone area?

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  Год назад

      Not that we’re great tropical storm experts but on a performance cat you should be able to avoid one with the current early warning systems in place. If one would approach here in New Caledonia we would have a choice between sailing out of its path or hiding in the designated mangrove hurricane hole closely. So far the weather here has been a lot better than what I see around NZ. The last @glyworldodyssey boats that are still in NZ are having a difficult time to find a decent weather window for the crossing.

    • @deerfootnz
      @deerfootnz Год назад

      @@CatGreatcircle You are so wrong. There is no technology to predict cyclone path with any reliability. None. Your are being foolish and taking unnecessary risk. It's not safe.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  Год назад

      It’s not about moving at the very last moment it’s about moving to the area north of 10 degrees south days before a potential threat at 230-250 miles a day or choose to moor in the mangroves

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  Год назад

      It was much scarier to be on the other side of the globe and have a cyclone coming straight over our boat in Whangarei

    • @deerfootnz
      @deerfootnz Год назад +1

      @@CatGreatcircle you guys are a danger to yourselves and others. How are you going to know about a threat "days before". A cyclone track is extremely uncertain, even 24 hours out. I worry about others looking at your channel and imagining that you know what you are doing and getting themselves into trouble. Deliberately sailing into the cyclone area in cyclone season is very foolish. Deliberately motoring against low light at high speed in an area with known chart innacuracy was also foolish. The least you could do is put some sort of disclaimer in your video. Not to do so is irresponsible.
