  • We are going to find out how your SCR box, DPF Box, ATD or whatever other name you have for it, works with a real example. The proper name is AfterTreatment System Box that is the way Freightliner called it.
    Note: There are two main differences between the older (2012 to 2016) and newer (2017 and up)
    1. SCR Inlet Temperature Sensor was removed.
    2. Soot Sensor was introduced. Which one is around the same area of the Outlet Nox Sensor. I am talking at the end of the ATS.
    3. It might be other differences, not sure about the size of the filters compare to the old design but for now those are the main I found.

    One of our truck kept throwing the code 520372/16
    Truck is 2019 cascadia, 350k miles , we clean def filterand dpf, changed both inlet and outlet nox sensor, Doc outlet temp sensor, but code still show up after a week. Do you happen to know the problem?
    Been taking to the dealer still the same thing, they clear the code and pass the SCR test and still show up after 2500-3k miles. My driver is OtR

    I have this one box DPF. This is my problem....
    I have coolant leaking out of the bottom of the one box pan out of what looks like a drain hole. Even when the truck isn’t running it is leaking coolant. I am pretty sure coolant doesn’t go towards any of this whole system right?
    Would the coolant be leaking by the DEF pump? And draining through to the DPF? It is a pretty steady leak and will drain the whole coolant resivoir.

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  3 года назад +1

      There is a possibility that your truck DEF quality sensor, it is broken and the coolant is flowing to the DEF. The quality sensor is the one on top of the DEF tank. So, open the filler blue cap and with long thin stick check the color, if you see is clear your DEF is fine. But if it’s color is red, that might be the issue with ATS one box. I hope this help thanks for watching and support the channel.

    How can you tell if the DOC or SCR are bad if you can't see anything physically wrong? I just replaced a box and after the old one was pulled they said the wiring harness was melted and several sensors were failed. What I want to know is if I can rebuild the one box with new filters and sensors.

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  2 года назад

      It is possible to repair the ATD box, but I would not recommend to fix it, in our fleet we tried three times, and after sometime (around 6 months) those failed again. Perhaps if you can replace the DOC and SCR themselves that could work but that requires more money, I think. So, I think the best if to give back to the dealership for a core refund because once you altered the box they would not accept it. Thank you for watching the video.

    I’m getting SCR NOX EFFICIENCY LOW CODE. Freightliner basically told me to replace my one box because the inlet Nox temp is lower than the outlet and all of the sensors and everything else is working fine. Can the DOC AND SCR BE CHANGED OR FIXED Without having to replace the whole box

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  Год назад +1

      This is a good question, there are some places that could fix your DOC box, but I would not recommend it because we tried in our fleet couple times it works for like a month and then the same problem comes back again, so at the end is a waste of money, perhaps you should wait to get some money and get a new one. This is just my personal opinion.

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  4 года назад +2

      This is really hard to tell if an used ATS Box will be fine, but there are couple things you could check:
      1. Pay attention to the sides of the box, I have seen when DOC has been pushed, they cut around right side area (if you are seeing the box from the front side). This means it has been fixed.
      2. Get something like a needle around 5 inches long, look for the DOC outlet Temperature hole, then insert the needle inside of the hole, if the box is Ok, it should go smoothly in, but if it doesn't, this means DOC is damaged and pushed.
      3. Look at the the outlet of the ATS box, with a flashlight you can see if there is any crack at the end of the SCR, of course, this is just a small glance but it worth to check it out.
      Remember even if all this points are Ok, the real test is to pass the NOx conversion process. I hope this help you and thanks for watching.

    I have western star with dd16 one box after treatment system I cleaned the filters recently but my truck require me a force regen pretty much every other day. What could be the problem? And I found this video helpful. Thanks

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  5 лет назад +2

      It depends what you mean with “every other day”... if your truck is asking for it every week, that is Ok. If your truck is asking for it every day that means there is a problem. Usually, local drivers and long haul driver have different timers in their trucks for regeneration. In other words, the basic you can check is:
      1. Are you a long haul or local driver? Local driver means a lot of idle which kicks in faster the parked regeneration than the one in a highway for long periods of time.
      2. Is the time for asking parked regeneration normal? Compare the time before and now for the request parked regeneration. Is the same time? I mean by days.(even every three days is fine as long It passes the regeneration).
      3. If your answer in question 1 is you are long haul driver and question 2 is every day. Then means... yeah, you might have an issue with your DPF or other exhaust components.

      Por desgracia ese problema es muy común en la caja de los camiones freightliner, en mi opinión personal, tendría que reemplazar toda la caja. Pero antes de ello le aconsejó que la examine un mecánico de su confianza que revise todo alrededor de la caja para ver si algo está flojo. Si todo se ve bien, si única opción sería reemplazarla. Esta es mi opinión personal, recuerde que su vehículo debe ser inspeccionado por un mecánico o técnico especializado en sistemas de emisiones antes de cualquier reparación. Muchas gracias por el apoyo al canal y espero que mi respuesta le ayude.

    Hey Buddy, I just got replaced Def filters and Knox sensor from the freightliner dealership. My truck worked well for couple weeks maybe 2. One day, I was pulling 45k and going uphill in Pennsylvania and my def light started blinking even though I had full def and fuel in the tanks with 2 check engine amber lights came on. I then immediately pulled over on the side of the shoulder and view the fault codes. One was telling me poor def quality and the other one was SPN4364 FMI18 and SPN3364FMI2. I did parked regen on my 2015 Cascadia and the codes disappeared along with the engine lights. This only occurred when I'm heavy and going uphill. Can you please help me out with this situation.

      It might be time to replace your ATS box or perhaps other components from the exhaust system are starting to misfire. If your truck still pass the parked regeneration every time you do it, just keep it that way. In the meantime, prepare yourself to invest some money in your vehicle. I hope this help you. Remember, you can ask the dealership if your truck qualifies for an ATS box warranty, I read comments around here that they have warranty, but it is something only the dealer can let you know.

    How do you know when you need a one box replacement?

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  4 года назад +12

      The most common cause to replace your ATD (Aftertreatment Device) or One Box.
      1. Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) has been push. This one is the most know by Technicians. Because the high back pressure generate by the obstruction of the soot or ash particles.
      2. The Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) failure to pass the NOx conversion test. For this there are various issues like DEF contamination, SCR defective from factory, SCR crack from inside and many others issues.
      These two are the most common reasons to replace your one box, other (less common) could be like Turbocharger failure and causing a moderate amount of oil to go into the one box.
      I hope this help you to understand better when you need to replace your ATD. Thanks for watching and stay around for more.

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  4 года назад +2

      There are couple things you can check:
      1. Make sure there is not contamination in the DEF tank.
      2. Check the noise from the box when you are driving or active regeneration is taken place, rough noise around the ATS box can be a signal that it is getting bad.
      3. Pay attention to DEF level, is it consuming too much? Or nothing at all? Those are signs that might be an issue with the DEF pump or injector.
      4. Get a closer look to the stack pipe or the lower exhaust pipe, is there a black smog color around the outlet? If yes, that means one or both DPF might be bad and you might need to replace them soon.
      I hope this help you and thanks for watching, I am glad to be helpful.

      Unfortunately, VIN truck number is required to be sure you are buying the right sensors, however, you could compare the old number with the new ones, pay attention to the plastic connector, if you look carefully, you will find the number of each sensor around there, including NOx sensor, sometimes they update the numbers, it might not match but if the sensor connector goes in properly, that is going to be the right one. Great content! Never seen anyone break it down as you did..
    I had a question regarding my 1-box. I keep getting the "SCR Low NOx efficiency" code, but only when I'm under a load climbing hills, I've changed, outlet psi sensor, inlet/outlet DOC temp sensor, DPF temp sensor, both NOx sensor's, metering valve(2015 cascadia) and the code still came back on. It passes every regen, they last approximately 45 min. I have a new DEF pump at home and the #7 injector I'll change.
    Now I heard you talk a little about the 1-box making noise, but what kind of noise? Like peices of metal chattering? I'm asking because I notice that when I'm driving a long a barrier I can hear like a clicking noise coming from that area. It's not a constant clicking, it'll click three time's, stops then repeat. Is that normal? As in, is that the quantity valve working and spraying? Engine miles are 681,300, ash count is at 55%, going to get them cleaned in two week's. I don't beat on my truck, I always go whatever state speed limit is and I don't ever go past 25psi of boost.

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  4 года назад +1

      Glad you like the channel. About the ATS box noise, yeah, it sounds like metal chattering inside, you can heard it when you are driving or when your truck is doing parked regeneration. Pay attention to the sound when parked regeneration is taking place; it is a really distinct sound. Usually, that is a signal to replace to ATS box, might pass regeneration now, but eventually it will become more often. The ATS box might pass the SCR efficiency test barely, as well. To repair it could cost around $7000 just for the part, labor might vary. Of course, this is my humble opinion. Thanks for watching and stay tune for more.

If you pay close attention to the exhaust for a moderate leak or you have the DDDL tool to check the pressure you can tell if it it push or not, other way around without tools it is to take out the DPF inlet pressure sensor, after loosening it, if it gives you hard time to pull it out it means DOC must be push, however this applies only for the front filter, not for the rear one. so your best shot it is to open both to be sure everything is fine. I hope this answer your questions.

      The Intel and Outlet NOx sensors, both holes are in the Aftertreatment Box. It is possible to fix both holes if they have been damaged in order to remove the old sensors.

    When do I need to change my def box

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  3 года назад +2

      The ATD (Aftertreatment Device) box should be replace for couple different reason like:
      1. Turbo misfire causing oil going to the ATS.
      2. Damage EGR cooler causing coolant to go into the exhaust system.
      3. Bad fuel injectors.
      4. ATD expose to Excessice smoke from the engine.
      5. Not performing Parked regeneration when the vehicle need it.
      This are just a few reasons why you MIGHT need to replace the ATD device, as always, you must seek first a proper repair shop to perform a complete diagnostic. Thanks for watching.

    Is it important to change the actual one box too?

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  2 года назад +1

      Yes, but this depends how bad it is the NOx efficiency, sometimes you could wait a bit longer to replace it, a technician with a DDDL software can tell you a more accurate estimate.

    How long it takes to replace it?

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  3 года назад +1

      Good question, it depends if everything goes smoothly and parts (everything new) are ready to installmaybe around 5 hours. Note: This time is for the whole installation which include harness with sensors installation, DPF installation, and cover. It might be even more time if transferring used parts from old to the new SCR.

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  Год назад

      This SCR box is NOT serviceable, so once it fails, you will need to buy a need one, trust me, we fixed one in our shop and it failed again after 6 months. So, try to get a new one or an used that is in condition (which is hard to find right now) thanks for watching and I hope this information is helpful to you.

    Can u delete the def

    • @LetstalkDIESEL
      @LetstalkDIESEL  3 года назад

      You can delete the ATS device from the ECU/MCM, but your vehicle will not perform efficiently in a long run, you might not need to take care of the DPF/SCR but the trade of it is to deal with power/EGR issues and who knows what else after deleting the ATS device from the ECU/MCM. Personally, I do NOT recommend those kind of repairs but it is just my personal opinion. Thanks for watching.

      As long as it is a sealed unit it is unrepairable and they intended to soak the owners with the junk, this box is a gold mine for the right attorney and a massive class action
