- My favourite version of the poem.
1.
Is there for honest poverty
That hings his head, an' a' that?
The coward slave, we pass him by --
We dare be poor for a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
Our toils obscure, an' a' that,
The rank is but the guinea's stamp,
The man's the gowd for a' that.
2.
What though on hamely fare we dine,
Wear hoddin grey, an' a' that?
Gie fools their silks, and knaves their wine --
A man's a man for a' that.
For a' that, an' a' that,
Their tinsel show, an' a' that,
The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor,
Is king o' men for a' that.
3.
Ye see yon birkie ca'd 'a lord,'
Wha struts, an' stares, an' a' that?
Tho' hundreds worship at his word,
He's but a cuif for a' that.
For a' that, an' a' that,
His ribband, star, an' a' that,
The man o' independent mind,
He looks an' laughs at a' that.
4.
A prince can mak a belted knight,
A marquis, duke, an' a' that!
But an honest man's aboon his might --
Guid faith, he mauna fa' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
Their dignities, an' a' that,
The pith o' sense an' pride o' worth
Are higher rank than a' that.
5.
Then let us pray that come it may
(As come it will for a' that)
That Sense and Worth o'er a' the earth
Shall bear the gree an' a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
It's comin yet for a' that,
That man to man the world o'er
Shall brithers be for a' that.
A beautiful poem. Spoken beautifully.
Just wonderful. Thank you for posting.
Really beautiful ❤✨😍
This is a beautiful rendition. Thank you for sharing it.
Strange perhaps, but I prefer the parts read by the non-actors. They sound more honest.
Just wandering around on YT and found this. Thank you for posting. Glorious poem, not heard it before but gone straight into my top 10 ever. Again, thank you.
IMHO, it's best recited, rather than sung. Very nice job.
I totally agree. It makes a nice song, but it is much better recited.
This is fantastic, does anyone know the source of the footage and/or what is was shot for?
I love this poem. I think the best version is the version sang by Ewan Maccoll.

@Kootje792 Thank you!
Happy burns
Focussing a problem?
Burns and Scotland at its best.
Larry Smith i am Scottish and thanks the country you live in is awesome too!
Needs subtitles. I can't understand what they are saying.
Please see the description.
@@jirihuf I did :D It skips a section of text and maybe you just have to be Scottish to understand the lyrics for a'that?
@@jirihuf Thanks immensely for the post and for the words!
It’s nice. But it’s wishful thinking. Human nature is too complex and the devil too pernicious. Perhaps if Burns spent more time at church and less time having children out of wedlock for their mothers to starve he’d have seen that.
Modern Scotland is a tyrannical nation and it’s no wonder, it’s based upon this. Makes me sad to see.
