My favorite character would personally be Asuka or Misato, but I totally agree about how well Shinji was executed as character. I think the main reason people hate some of the characters in Evangelion is they all show unpleasant sides of ourselves that we'd rather not think about. That, and shipping wars. I think shipping wars are the main reason why people who like Rei tend to hate Asuka and vice-versa.
- Who am I? - Rei Ayanami - Who are you? - Rei Ayanami - You're also Rei Ayanami? - Yes, I am called Rei Ayanami - We are all called Rei Ayanami - Why are all of you me? - Because other people call us Rei Ayanami...
I liked how this used this theme at the end theme for Evangelion for Netflix, I know it wasn’t the original music used, but it playing while showing Rei gives such a sad, emotionally, creepy, and mysterious vibe. Almost like foreshadowing the secret to Rei’s dark character and her background
Rei is another elaboration of the 'dark mother' theme common to a lot pop Japanese lit. Another example of this theme is 'Elly' from Xenogears, including color schemes, if one has played through the whole arc of the story. Reading too much into the Kabbalah connection misunderstands that Anno was not so much particularly interested in being faithful to source material (as opposed to say, George MacDonald in Lilith) as he was in finding strange and interesting images/stories. Much of Evangelion's charm (represented nicely in Rei) is evocation of the mysterious - as often happens in a dream - for which there really is no deeper explanation available. This, like surrealism in poetry, forces the mind to reach for explanations. Calling forth characters from esoteric or occult sources enhances the effect on the mind, Evangelion is a symbolist work. Also note that Lilith is not the devil or the source of evil, but in the legend, the first attempt to mate Adam by the Lord - with a kind of angel. Since the Kabbalah is itself, like Evangelion, an intentionally mystical fiction riffing off of obscure themes, Lilith offers an explanation for Adam's exclamation upon seeing Eve, "Flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood." Lilith is certainly not, in the end, a 'good guy' but, unlike Lucifer, still a sympathetic character (this comes out in Lilith by GMD) she is, if nothing else, bitter and lonely and misunderstood/misunderstanding. (A lack of self-knowledge leads to being misunderstood.) This symbolism is preserved in Evangelion, We even have the 'Rei as Lilith, Asuka as Eve' pattern. It's also worth considering that all of the females, given the original ending, actually are not people but representations in Shinji's mind of feared or hated female types - caricatures of coldness, hotness, sleaziness, etc. IMHO, it was a neat twist to make the whole thing real with End of Evangelion, though it confuses the dream-like narrative. It is interesting that the color scheme on Rei is chosen to make her attractive despite having coloration that ought to be hideous. The eyes can often be more of a brown than a red; and the hair is a soft lavender or a bluish silver (like a silverhead or platinum blonde might have.) Her other features (lips, fingernails, etc) are as though she is a normal human, whereas one would expect her odd coloration to result in strange undertones and discolored mucosa. I think the bottom line is that Rei is highly feminine and is depicted attractively and so acquires a lot of male sympathy on that alone. That's the bait on the hook for the twist. Good job, Anno!
Rei is probably my favorite character in all of fiction, she's so much and so little. She comes so close to being human yet is destined to fail, to live as a lost soul in a false body, bound to a test tube to even continue existing. In the end she chooses to just stop existing, as she can never be real. She's the most human yet inhuman being in the whole series. Truly a great character
When it comes to personality traits, Asuka, a natural human being, resembles the assertive, extroverted Lilith while Rei, an artificial human, has the submissive traits of Eve. It is a part of Rei's character development that she realizes she doesn't have to obey anyone, culminating in her rejection of Gendo's plan and actually becoming Lilith, but in her own terms.
That song fits to her so much, its so dark it gives me the willies and perfect illustrated her character . I like her character and specially her red eyes. Last one minute is best, it shows how much she must suffer.
I would say the same for shinji, from what I see most people seem to hate him. but to me he is my favourite character in the whole series. He always wants to do what's best for everyone but is so scared of being hurt in return. and it was executed so well too
Rei's story was complex, but her realization and confrontation of her main issue was much less dramatic than Shinji's or Asuka's or even Misato's. Her moment was with a pair of glasses and not a total mental breakdown. She had a story and much of her search was to discover the meaning of a soul, if it mattered to have one and who she really was. Hence the "I am I" mental monologues.
A deconstruction of the mecha genre, it slowly breaks its characters as they go through, like a mirror. Things like Asuka and Shinji's self-hatred happen all the time, we just see it in a different and fictionalized way, with characters we have grown to love.

You realize her soul is that of Lilith, as in, according to Jewish Mysticism(its source) the source of all evil in the world. Her body is a clone of Shinji's mother, Yui, so her existence is essentially representing a person being possessed by the devil(despite only acting as such in her first body), changes your view a little, doesn't it?

@Omegadge1 SPOILER! asuka is more sympatetic than one might get the impression of. she blocked away her past by trying to be as useful/meaningful as possible. each time shinji surpassed her at something, she was literally beaten down to a pult and lost that only spark she held on to.All she cares about is scaring her and that only made her hate it. at the end of evangelion though she manages to accept her way of living just like shinji ^^ which made me love the ending even more^^
