Criminally underrated, Kiki Dee has consistently produced incredible music over the past fifty plus years. Her wonderful voice could blow any of today’s female artists clean out of the water. Fabulous.
To all those who say she never made it big, I think she did. Several memorable hits of her own as well as being one half of the duo that produced one of the biggest hit we'll ever hear.
Wow she really sings this song really really well!!! I’m not usually a fan of other people singing someone elses song. But man she does this song well!
She is the best British female I have ever heard. Her version of "San Jose" here is one of the best ever sang by anybody. And special note: She is singing LIVE here, wow !!!!
Imagine tuning into the tv on sat night in the Uk and seeing this world class performance it's mind blowing. Not just Kiki but the arrangement and live orchestra
As a child, although I loved rock 'n' roll, loved this easy listening sound. Kiki Dee is quite something, beautiful performance. Love her crystal voice.
As a teenager, listening to Kiki Dee singing with elton john, I found her a dull singer. Well, after so long I see her beautiful, wonderfully interpreting this and so many other songs and I see how my judgment was wrong. Time is the master of reason. My sincere apologies, Kiki. You've always been a wonderful singer.
Yeah. When I was a kid, I used to like her 1977 duet with Elton John titled "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" and her 1974 hit titled "I've Got The Music In Me." However, I outgrew those two songs as I matured into adulthood. Nevertheless, I've grown to like her stuff from the 1960s and the early 1970s ever since I started coming across songs of hers like the one in the video above here on RUclips. In my opinion, Kiki Dee ruled the 1960s and the early 1970s with her voice.
ConsumerWarrior agreed, however her career was mismanaged. She should have gotten more mileage out of her talent but whoever was managing her career kept switching her from one genre to the next too quickly. People couldn't get a sense of who she really was. Kiki was/is so versatile that actually worked against her getting a firmly set musical identity to propel her career in one direction. After she achieved a huge following then her management could have experimented with different styles and see how the public reacted.
I've studied Kiki's career as I became fascinated with her video w Elton.. Don't go Breakin My Heart. Kiki's performance was brimming w talent, cuteness, and an innocent sense of humor. The girl pulled it off dressed in a jean overalls w a simple blouse, a sterile looking recording studio. No special effects ect ect. Kiki and Elton made magic happen. It was the quintessential feel good duet of the 1970s. Kiki was the biggest reason that it was so wonderful.
This classy lady could sing it all......pop, rock, ballads, r&b,,and do it all effortlessly......sad that she never reached superstar status......today her voice isn't quite what it used to be.....but she remains one of my favourite vocalists.....
pinz2022 Thanks for the reply......I would have to agree with you......her being the first white woman to be signed to Motown and all.....she is lovely though.....I emailed her once, and got a nice reply back....
FMHammyJ Yup. She'll always have the historic distinction of being the first "blue-eyed soul" artist to be signed by Berry Gordy's Motown. Unfortunately, not much came of it. I guess Dusty Springfield stole her thunder.
Dusty Springfield was in the right place at the right time when Berry Gordy was shrewdly gaming to expand 'The Motown sound' sales into Europe with the Caravan multi-artist tours. Gordy focused on Springfield alone to 'introduce' his groups over there via the 'Ready Steady Go!' television show. Any other female contemporaries with a soulful singing voice like Kiki Dee got lost in the shuffle.
She still has a strong following around the world especially in the 70s. I was very young during that time but remember her. She sang songs effortlessly.
Kiki Dee was still not very well known when she did this flawless cover of 'Do You Know the Way to San Jose'. She has such a beautiful voice. I love her!!!!
@@paulm4433 Yes also had True Love, a Number Two hit with Elton John, and quite a number of hit singles in the 70s and early 80s. She won't be worrying about how to pay this winter's gas bill, that's for sure. Thoroughly deserved, a very talented lady with a great singing voice and beautiful as well. What's not to like, apart from her dungarees in hte video for 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart?'
Yes, Amoureuse, for me, was her best song ever. The song was originally written and recorded in 1972 by French singer Emilie Sanson, Kiki's version (with completely different English lyrics, which bore little relation to the original French ones) came out in late 1973 and just missed the Top Ten. There's a live performance of her singing it on You Tube, from TOTP in late 1973. Her performance of the song is absolutely flawless.
If they would have given her the perfect stage name,,, she would have been 100 times more noticed. She's gorgeous, and a fantastic singer. And I've never heard of her until tonight. WTF
Despite being a very talented singer, and able to cover a wide range of material, Kiki Dee never hit the heights that Dusty and Lulu did. Her biggest hits were with Elton John, but as a solo artist she never got higher than no 13. Oh yes, she was also part of the Crowd, who had a no 1 with You'll Never Walk Alone, proceeds going to survivors of the Bradford fire, and as a Bradford girl, her bit wasn't hard to understand.
these are bert bacharach songs and yes i love her singing his songs and think she shouldda done more. she's as good as dionne warwick and its wonderful to see Kiki's versatility and of course her gorgeousness.
@pinz2022 i watch many of kiki's videos. i love her doing doing bacharach songs becuse kiki is great at doing etherial songs ..whimsical songs like this are def for her. and your right her songs you mentioned are great as well. ive become a huge kiki fan in the past two years. if i lived in england i would attend many of her concerts. she should have someone promote a tour of the u.s. but it may be to hectic for her cause even though she is still one fine looking lady she may be content.
@cbak12sg This wasn't her song, that's for sure. Watch her blowing the doors off with her own stuff, such as "Small Town", "I've got the Music in me, or "Star" and then say that she couldn't match Dusty or Lulu.
Yep. This doesn't come close to the Dionne Warwick version. It's way too generic and missing the soul, angst and sadness of the original. I actually think Kiki was a special talent, but this was not one of her shining moments. She is dressed for a beauty pageant here and this sounds like something from the "talent" portion of such a pageant.
@zarathustra2k1 yeah, i so agree. i would use both her looks and voice for the model of sheer lovliness. you don't see that kind of girl very often in any era especially today. and yes she should of been a household name in both UK and US.
In the classic British comedy shows there's was musical guests doing interludes. But this should of been a single, may of worked, Kiki had potential, sad it didn't work out.

I'm in love, and have been for years. Her voice. Her confidence, and her charisma are all beautiful. And so is she.
What a beautiful woman! Great singer!
How on earth did I not become more aware of this magnificent, beautiful, gifted woman until now? How could one not fall. n love?

Yes, Kiki is great, but there are several others under the radar too.
Still prefer Dionne Warwick's version more.
Wonderfully pure voice. I would agree that Kiki deserved more fame, given her undeniable talent.
Gosh...that voice...like velvet. She is so beautiful. Adore her ! Thanks for sharing :)
GREAT adjective.
So underrated, her and Dusty were by far the best British female singers of the sixties and beyond.
Hear, hear!!! But you left out Pet Clark.
@@LesbianVampireLover Don't forget Lulu and Christine Perfect.
What a change in fashions , 5 years later she's got a bob , wearing dungarees a dueting with Elton John
The best British singer will always be Cleo Lane. And only Dusty is worthy of # two.
@@jeanesingsjazz I see you're a jazz fan, fair enough, she was very good, personally I'm not a big jazz fan, we all have favorites.

I had no idea Kiki was so successful in the 60's . Such a charismatic talented singer . Even more success would have been well deserved 👍
She started recording at 16 in 1964, did a lot of backing vocals for Dusty.
Sophisticated Beautiful Lady with the voice of an Angel
The first British artist to sign to mowtown records
