i just started doing this too and my first chain i thought wasnt gonna be great but it surprised me in how good it cut. my first chain i did it on a chain that was already close to the end of its life.
lol 😆 oh man my first time it took me 3 hours to do a 24” Stihl 3/8.. some teeth were great and some were awful. It just felt so foreign to me. Now I’m a lot better and I ended up buying a swing arm square grinder. It’s fun but I still love my round filed chain. I got friends that are real good at it so I just get it from them lol 😆
Getting it from someone that knows what they're doing I'd probably my best bet lol!!! But this .325 18" chain probably took me 1.5hr total if I had to guess.
I just bought my first 100’ roll of Oregon square semi skip chain and I’m eager to start making loops. I’m pretty good with a round file but I don’t want to invest in a bunch of high quality square files until I see how this cuts stock vs my other stock chain. Round file is used by 90% of fellers. I don’t know if it’s worth it for me to invest the time and patience into learning this all over again 😂
Honestly for normal cutting, idk if it's worth it, for racing is still a maybe for me. I've seen and round filed a pile of fast round chain. Plus it's way more forgiving if you take a hit. That's my opinion anyhow. But good square is so freakin smooth if you can get it there.
Dubbs once you figure out that square filling you won't go back to a regular round file , i bought two square grinders and im going to say i almost forgot how to file a regular chain cus those grinders spoiled me
Can tell it cuts better than my first ever try. Not bad at all really! Well done!
Coolio, it all starts in the beginning 😊
Pretty good cutting if you ask me, those chips looked good
Greetings oldtimer!
Better than my first square chain🤷🏻♂️
I'm trying to figure out what angle does what!!! My little brain just can't grasp it. 😂
Practice makes perfect.you will get there buddy.took me four chains to finally get it down....
I expect I'll be close to that, def is an art to getting this mastered.
Looking better! You'll get it perfected over time.

It’s an art! That racket gauge is my next purchase I think. Good luck on the new adventure.
@@stannelson2582 I love these gauges, had them for at least 2 years so far. Takes a long time to wear one out. Highly recommended by me.
👍👍 looked good to me!
