The best music festival ever happened in Greece with Cure,Depeche Mode, Clash, Stranglers and many more took place in Kallimarmaro Panathinaiko stadioum of Athens.

@@rushyeskansas The stranglers always "went along" with the Punk label but never considered themselves Punk and pushed back on that claim in interviews, especially later on in their career. Its not a case of agreeing, these are the facts.

I can understand not being able to play that solo to speed, he's using a semi acoustic so the bridge and string tension would be a lot more higher and rigid than an electric guitar. Makes it harder to play faster and higher notes.
In an interview with Dave Greenfield in "No Mercy" Dave points out that Hugh could never play the solo at the right speed. I don't think Dave was bitching about Hugh , just pointing out that he wasn't the most accomplished guitarist. I always thought that Hugh's gift was in his unorthadox style and not his technical ability.
I also found it interesting that Baz auditioned by playing the solo and was offered the place in the band on the strength of it.
This is a poor performance however but it's great to see any Stranglers footage from the 70's up to the mid eighties. !! .
Dave can't really talk though. Plays like his fingers are made of sausage at times.
Also, this performance is a lot faster than the record and even other live performances both with and without Hugh. Baz might be able to play the guitar but he completely lacks the character of Hugh Cornwell - the best voice in the band
he missed the fret making it flat not the timing.
I saw them in Edinburgh on the same tour when I was 16 my mate got on stage but JJ gave him a good kick up the arse straight back in the crowd great days

Yeah, as a musician, its hard to listen to a song live, especially one as intricate as this one, because Its so taxing to do, and you kind of cringe because you know something's gonna go wrong, but its still good man, good sports for doing it live to begin with!

@MrSKINFLICK The music itself is not difficult to play. I am a seasoned performer myself. I just think that Hugh had a bad night. Should have used his electric guitar instead on Golden Brown. For many years that song has been one of my favourites. Hugh is a good songwriter.
The filming of the mountain top and Coke add makes it special, i don't know why.

Την πρώτη μέρα ήμουν σκαστός απο το στρατόπεδο. Με φόρμα αγγαρίας κ άρβυλα κ απο πάνω ένα σκισμένο κοντομάνικο. Ευτυχώς κανείς δεν μου έδωσε σημασία, αφού έτσι κ αλλιώς ήταν πάνκ η φάση!! :)

at 2.42 , one of the front of house cameras catches jj laughing, possibly at that bad solo. I think it was JJ who once said that hugh never managed to get the solo spot on live, and even in the studio, it was a bit of a mission to get him to record it note perfect.
So what hugh made a mistake, he still wrote some incredible songs, I've seen him do this flawlessly. To be honest he doesn't look well here at all...every one gets there off days.

He just slid to the wrong position and messed up 3 or 4 notes. Probably didnt look when sliding up or maybe it was the first time he actually played that particular guitar. Easly done especially when you`re

I think the whole band is on "golden brown"... instruments are not even in tune.
In Song by Song Hugh himself agrees with Dave Greenfield when he said that he could never get the tempo quite right for the solo...though apparently he's got it sorted now...I'd say he's a much better guitarist now than he was in the Stranglers.
Though in fairness don't think this cock up was much to do with speed...he just got his finger positions wrong.

well, I don't know what exactly you talk about when you said the solo is not hard to do... but If you play the guitar and know the scales "The solos are not the big deal" the fact is create good melodies and few guys do it. Otherwise we are not machines and mistakes are normal. haha
