It was the best because she never changed the original flow of the song. Like many artists today who just go overboard, and the outcome sometimes is disastrous. When you sing the national anthem, it is not about you. Whitney's version is the best of all-time and no one can ever top that!
agreed. Everyone keeps screwing up original songs even Christmas songs and they sound downright horrible. Also pentatonix is stupidly overrated, choir and acapella isn't even anything new and is the most common thing you can find in the classical music world.
Well she did just ever so slightly to fit her vocal range, but my God was it perfection!!! No overly done runs (I hate those)... just singing/belting it as the glorious singer she was.
Exactly. When singers try to make it their own and take it off course of the melody, it gets on my last nerve. One "singer" a couple of years ago sang it and it was a disaster. She said she tried to make it sexy. Okay, the "Star Spangled Banner" is NOT supposed to be SEXY! It's supposed to make you proud to be an American - not cringe. But, yes, Whitney's was flawless and powerful and definitely made you proud to be an American as it's supposed to.
That Florida Orchestra was the goat as well. It is almost impossible to find a perfect one to match to a perfect voice. That's why it was so emotional. They both were sheer perfection!
This was arguably the best live performance and arrangement of the national anthem at any sporting event. She stayed pretty close to the original but gave it an upgrade that only she could pull off. Many others have attempted to recreate this, but there's only one Whitney.
She is the greatest female vocalist ever, without question! No better version than whitney's as this is the only version that became a pop hit and when into the charts.. she is the G.O.A.T. ❤
Yeah been familiarizing myself with her live performances and found this song she sung at her HBO concert called "A Song For You"-- amazing!!! I urge u to check it out, my jaw hit the ground!!
Lovely video. Whitney brought so much triumph and unity to this performance that you can’t help but feel patriotic even if you aren’t American. She sang it so effortlessly while smiling the whole time. It’s like they called her up last minute, she put on a sweatsuit, knocked it out the ballpark, jumped off the stage and then went home. Phenomenal.
Great reaction but would remind that it wasn’t only ‘belting’, which speaks of her vocal power, but it’s also the nuance to match the amazing orchestration. When she sings the line, ‘o’re the ramparts we watched..’, the lush orchestral arrangement softens & alters the chords a bit, and Whitney rolls right with it singing softer, but also with depth, like you mentioned with ‘reverence’ & she just caresses the passage before she takes it next level strong, powerful & beautiful! Greatness! R.I.P. 🧡👍
On January 27th, 1991, I was heavily in labor when I witnessed this astonishing piece of history on the TV screen (approximately 6 pm) At 8:36 pm, I gave birth (coincidentally around halftime. Lol) I was privileged to look into the faces of TWO beautiful strong females each belting beautiful music, although one was more in key than the other. 🥰🥰❤❤ Thank you for your great reaction AND service!
This was a moment in time for sure. The Gulf War had just started and patriotism was flooding the western world. Whitney is the goat of vocalists of all time, and the Florida Orchestra was incredible. What pushes this so over the top, and makes me cry everytime, is the joy on her face as she sings this. She is bursting with happiness and pride as she sings this. How on Earth can she sing like this? And do it with the widest smile grin? She's superhuman. Will never be anyone like her.
Makes me so proud to be an American hearing this. We definitely have our faults, but I have ancestors who fought in every war since the Colonial Wars. We bicker in the USA like a family, but I guarantee you if another Dec 7, 1941 happened, we'd unite so fast! Whitney will never be outdone when it comes to this! Wow did God bless her with this voice!!!❤️🤍💙
~* Your review was the best ever.. Ive seen em over the years.. but ya made me pop a tear ..had a lil sniffle....ty...you are so genuine and heartfelt...Im gonna come check out your vidz for sure....ty for the vid *~
I would love to know who created the arrangement. IMO they deserve almost as much credit as Whitney Houston. They only reason I say almost is that she probably could have sung the standard version and been the best ever. But there were a few changes that I think make this version so outstanding. 1. Bringing down "Whose broad stripes.." to a quieter level kept the song from feeling flat due to the whole thing being bold (as it usually is), 2. The pause before "through the night" also broke up the tempo and gave it life. 3. Changing the notes on "was still there. In the standard song all the phrases are the same so this gives that phrase added attention. 4. The final note and pulses while singing "Brave" at the end. It just made the ending tremendously dramatic. I should emphasize that @polyprinz is correct in that this does stick to the original flow of the song. The changes I noted above are fairly subtle but the effect they have is outstanding.
The arranger of this version was John Clayton, a noted jazz musician and composer. He made 2 significant changes to the music: he changed the time signature from the standard 3/4 time to 4/4, which effectively slowed the anthem down a little, which in turn allowed Whitney time for the stylistic vocalizations she added that also make this version so special; and he reharmonized primarily verse 2 using some jazzy chord substitutions that are beautiful without being distracting or changing the character of the song. All these were subtle but noticeable changes that, in my opinion, gave more impact to her presentation. And then there's her voice -- controlled power! The most beautiful version indeed!
Most definitely the best ever! 😍🥰 If you're gonna do some bad, or questionable versions, check out Fergie. I personally don't care for it, although she is an extremely talented lady. 🤷♀️

I am not a veteran, I am not an American, but I had chills all over just listening to her sing. OMG. I'll tell you what! no one is ever beating that.

Christina Aguilera's was one of the worst performances of the national anthem. Sad when you sing and don't know the lyrics to the national anthem.
@@polyprinz one if the worst definitely. How bout Roseanne? Omg, disgraceful

FUN FACT: Whitney’s mother Cissy Houston sang backup vocals for Elvis Presley. Both of these women were phenomenally talented singers.

Who is Whitey Houston?
her life somewhat of a greek tragedy. Messed her voice up with drugs. Vocal cords were burned and she tried to get them fixed but it was too late
