I think he was a way harsh on Alaska's flag lol. The smaller stars represent the big dipper which is part of Ursa Major, probably the most well recognized constellation. The one big star represents polaris, the star that people once used, and still often use, to navigate at night. Polaris, known as the north star, sits near perfectly on the north celestial pole. Also Alaska is the most northern located US state, which is why I think Polaris on their flag fits them perfectly.
The Big Dipper isn't actually a Constellation, it is an Asterism.
@@lanebowles8170 right, my bad. I'm not the most knowledgeable on that but I want to learn more about it.
Alaska's flag could be nice, but the stars are too small, and there's too much empty blue space.
He was way too harsh on New Mexico's flag. What the fuck gives that it looks like a city flag? Bad city flags exist aplenty and state flags should be designed better. Honestly New Mexico's flag is perfection and I don't sense anything wrong.
Coming from Maryland, our flag is everywhere in the state. You'll see it all over the place, on flag poles on people's property, on t shirts, hoodies, cups, pretty much anything you can think of. There's some history to the flag as others have pointed out and we're quite proud of it, moreso than other states with their state flags. I'd actually say Maryland's flag is among the most iconic state flags in the USA.
You can always tell how good a state flag is by how often you see it. I think Texas wins that, but Colorado, California, and Maryland also take pride in their flag.
It does look pretty dang nice, almost hearkening back to the Medieval Ages.

5:02 A British guy of all people should "get" the Maryland flag. It's very coat of arms-y with LITERALLY being a coat of arms.
Exactly my thoughts. I was so enraged Lord Baltimore will wake up in a sweat about this in the afterlife.
Also, the flag of the British monarch is quartered, like Maryland's, to represent the Crown's rule over England as well as Scotland and [Northern] Ireland. Maryland's flag represents the arms of the Calverts, as well as the Crosslands, which was the arms of the family of George Calvert's mother. George Calvert was the first Baron of Baltimore and got the rights to found the colony of Maryland.
That really surprised me. I knew about Lord Baltimore and his coat of arms....and I'm from the Midwest, never been to Maryland.
Also how can you hate Maryland’s flag ( ALSO also isn’t he a hypocrite for saying other flags shouldn’t be on other flags. I think we all now why)

Regarding Maryland's flag: That is the shield from their state seal (which is just an American way to avoid saying coat of arms)
While a lot of states simply put their state seals right in the middle of the flag, in the case of Maryland it takes up literally the entire flag. The banner of arms is from the 17th century by Cecil, the 2nd Baron Baltimore. The yellow and black represents Lord Baltimore's banner (heraldic shield of his father), which was used by pro-Union Marylanders during the Civil War. While the white and red is the Crossland banner (his grandmother) that was used by pro-Confederate Marylanders.

Alaska’s flag was designed by an 11 year old native orphan who won the statewide flag drawing contest. It’s been so iconic up here that blue and gold alone are associated with the state in such a connective way.
Actually each State DOES have its own defense forces. They’re called The National Guard (Army and Air Force units) and the Naval Militoa (Navy and Marine Corps units)

Fun fact: the “crescent moon” on the South Carolina flag may actually be a gorget (a piece of medieval armor worn around the throat) which was displayed on the uniforms of those who defended Fort Moultrie in the revolutionary war.
Hello! South Carolinian here--it is indeed a gorget, worn on the caps of the men of the 2nd South Carolina Regiment of Ft. Moultrie fame. When our present flag was created in 1861, the gorget was added to symbolize South Carolina military units going back to the French & Indian War.

Louisiana's mother pelican caring for her young is supposed to represent the state caring for its residents.
The flag of Maryland is your fault. It's the coat of arms for Baron Baltimore (the family that controlled the colony) - likely created by London's College of Arms.
Good
Yep, Lord Calvert & company, who founded the Maryland colony.
So I'm from Maryland and wanted to say that there's actually some history behind the Maryland flag. The patterns used were the flags of the royal family who first charted Maryland. And while it is still extremely complicated, at least its highly recognizable here. You'll see its design on everything from wooden crabs to a car's wheels, so in that regard it's a successful flag.

Alaska's is great if you know what constellation that is. It's Ursa Major/The Big Dipper, and the star that is separate from the rest is Polaris/The North Star. Navigators would look for Ursa Major in the sky and then follow the line from the bowl of the dipper to Polaris. If they walk/sail towards Polaris they are going north. Ursa Major and Polaris represent Alaska's latitude as the only polar state and the northernmost state, but also how Alaska is famous for exploration. It's "the last frontier", an untamed wildland for frontiersmen, explorers, and aviators to embrace their adventurous spirits. Mariners also famously used Ursa Major and Polaris to find their way, and Alaska is well known for its mariners as well.
Plenty of TV series have been made about the wilderness of Alaska and its explorers, mariners, outdoorsmen, and aviators. Such series as Life Below Zero, Deadliest Catch, Alaska: The Last Frontier, and Building Alaska feature such individuals -- one such show was even hosted and produced by the (former) state governor.

But it does lose some of the hype as all the songs release the day before each show making it hard to pick favorites like people do with Eurovision. Also the heats were probably a bad idea, they should just have done three of them and then move on to the finals directly, and not one heat every monday, but one or two days inbetween each one, as it is now almost not worth following because of the space between them. I also hope they won't start treating it as a tv-programme, but as an actuall competition, like Europe does with Eurovision.

The “Lone Star” thing for Texas comes from how it seceded from Mexico and was an independent country for a while before it joined the union. Texans are also very culturally independent-minded and suspicious of authority.
All state-wide elections go to the GOP, which is NOT very "independent-minded". A long time ago, I think they had a Democrat in there somewhere. The obsession with Saint Patrick's cross with southern flags has a lot to do with the Battle Flag of the Army of Virginia (see the later two Confederate States of America Flags). The "Rebel Flag" was on many Southern states flags for decades, and phased out over time, but echoes remain.
You sure it's not because those states were once territories of Spain? Only two southern states (FL and AL) have the st Andrew's (which is actually blue not red) or cross of burgundy( which is oddly enough is red but sawtoothed) on them.

Maryland's is everybody's worst-or-first. It's the heraldry of the Calvert family which founded the colony as a refuge for Catholic Englishmen, and offered freedom of religion not long after Rhode Island. It's one of the most Christian of flags, of which Hawaii's is tops, with three crosses. (Whether the saltires of the Southern states are actually the Cross of St Andrew has been left deliberately ambiguous since the Civil War, so they lose points for that.) Louisiana's pelicans also denote Christian ideals of piety and charity.

I never seen so many people unironically be proud of something so hideous
This has “black pepper is too spicy” energy.
Dude, that's the big dipper
you're over here hating on Maryland, imo it's one of the most recognizable state flags of all and is a hell of a lot more unique than all the blue background+crest flags, altho that's not saying much. but back to my point about being recognizable, other than some countries like Chad and Romania or [insert every country with a union jack on its flag here], I can recognize most countries just by their flag. that's not true for almost any state tho, but Maryland is one of the few exceptions.
Looking from the thumbnail i actually really like our state flag its one of the most uniquely designed flags not in the 50 states but in the entire world and its one of the like 3 flags in the world that use a checkerboard design
Brabant
I love your pfp
The only other one that comes to mind is Bavaria in Germany, so yes, it is very unique and I love it just for that.
One fun fact, while it's true the states are not the same as actual sovereign countries the states do actually have military forces, the National Guard is actually a collection of forces each organized and controlled by different states that can become federalized if needed and each state is allowed to organize a state defense force or sdf which are loyal to the state alone, although most states don't currently have active sdfs.
6:32 "you don't have flags on your flags"
literally every country with the british watermark: "im gonna pretend i didn't see that"
Maryland's flag is very polarizing, and I am one of those people that really likes it. I'm Californian btw.. I also don't like Hawaii's flag, and it has nothing to do with the Union Jack. New Mexico is my favorite.
New Mexicos and California's are my favorite
Nothing polarizing about it. People who hate it are just factually incorrect and fascists
Then you are based. MD flag is best flag
Considering im not finding a single person who agrees with his placement of the maryland flag and a lot of people who support it, I'm inclined to believe its not polarizing, rather the british person is just wrong
"As we all know, red is like the blood of those who fought for the freedom"

He would rate some of these flags so much higher if he understood what everything was lol.
triple shot of expresso break 😱
Fr if he actually knew something about flags he would be rating these differently
Fr bro
Ya i live in Arizona the weather gets so hot it feels like I am spontaneously combusting
Something to mention about Florida’s flag:
The Republic of West Florida (the 1 month long Republic created by Americans trying to take Florida from Spain before they sold it to America) had a flag so good that Texas copied it sometimes as their flag in the Mexican American War, it was the unofficial flag of the Confederacy in the Civil War, and Somalia took one look at it-brightened the blue, and said it was theirs. This flag is known as the Bonnie Blue flag and while it can have some racist connotations due to being used unofficially by the CSA for a few years, it’s use for decades prior to that for non-racist uses kinda disprove it. This flag isn’t as well known as it’s such a rare flag that most people in the US either think of Somalia or the Texan bootlegs of the flag rather than the original used for the wonky little short lived territory that 5 modern US states have borders in (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana).
Questionable spelling error lol
That typo in the title increased the interaction under this video by insane amounts! but probably gets it demonetized aswell :D
Edit: The L in flags was missing
yeah people are fucking mad lmao
What was the typo?
@@hardflip the last word...
💀💀💀💀
I don’t see a typo
As a texan let me tell you, the white and red on our flag is actually meant to be an homage to one of our first rebellion uprisings to Mexico, the colors meaning to be the white who migrated to Texas and the red to be the native Indians fighting together, the blue was added later as a "yes we would very much like to be a state plz" sort of thing. And as for the star the name Texas comes from the concho people meaning "friend" or "ally" who would often represent themselves as a 'lone star' in the sky
“14:02 Every state does in fact have their own militia, and most have an organized national guard which is able to help in events of floods or other national disasters, as well as being called upon by the governor for assistance or being called by the president to activate and be sent overseas
4:07 the Georgia flag is based on the actual flag of the Confederacy so you’re definitely correct here (the “Confederate flag” most people think of was their battle flag)
You are so correct. It was the Stars and Bars--the other was the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. NOT the flag of Claiborne's Division (white ball on blue background) or Van Dorn's Division (Gold crescent moon and stars on red background).
yup, georgia's flag is basically just the original CSA flag with a design inside the stars
@@barbaraleroy2842 I was gonna say that you beat me to it
@@barbaraleroy2842 Actually, the Confederate Battle Flag of Virginia was originally USA Battle Flag of the Navy that was adopted by Robert E Lee because it was very visible from long distance to rally troops because of its bright orange color. There were at least 3 other variants of the Battle Flag that different Confederate Army's used. The one that is always depicted by Hollywood is the Virginia one. The sad truth today is that Liberal Marxist Democracy hating morons have rewritten too much of history to the point that most people are now ignorant of what actually happened or what was. Example, Was the civil war really about slavery? Yes, 2 of the confederate states in its secession declaration listed slavery. However, only 2 of 13 states made that claim! The main complaint that drew succession had to do with Northern States control over Southern State exports. Northern States made it impossible for Southern States to export goods like cotton to English cotton mills and Tobacco to Holland/Nederand. This devastated southern economy. The fear main fear about Lincoln was that Lincoln doubled down on banning more Southern Exports like Indigo, Sugar, Chestnuts and Rice. Most people do not even realize that Before 1900, USA was the leading exporter of Chestnuts in the world. Simply, USA forests east of the Mississippi was 80% made up of Chestnut trees. Lincoln did 2 very evil things that effect us today! Causing the Chestnut blight that has wiped out 99% of the American Chestnut Tree and Causing the spread of the Bowl weevil that devastates cotton crops across the USA to this day! Lincoln before and after he was elected president made very public statements that he would not end slavery. In fact, Lincoln had a proposal sent to the southern States that succeeded and after the disaster of the first battle of Bull Run where US Army was soundly defeated. That proposal was that He (Lincoln) would not free the slaves. That States should have time to transition away from slavery and that all blacks no matter where they were in the USA, North, South or territories and states out west, would be sent back to Africa. Ironically, the African Country of Liberia was made reality and part of Lincoln's plan that he started but was killed before seeing it completed. There would have been a large chance that blacks would have been sent wholesale back to Africa had Lincoln not been assassinated. That last part is my opinion as there is no way to know what a person would actually do had they lived. However, the documents give me extremely strong position in support of this opinion.
@@barbaraleroy2842 I'm thinking you meant Cleburne, an Englishman, who was a corps commander from Arkansas.
Guys, get your screenshots in now before he fixes the title…. Lol
Geography on ibx's channel? Yes!!!!
Literally havent seen a comment agreeing with toycat about his opinions on the maryland flag lol. and i agree with the comments, it's a masterpiece of a flag.
Disappointed this is about flags.
Alaska's flag actually makes perfect sense. It's the portion of the Ursa Major constellation known as "The Big Dipper" and Polaris, the north star. The north star, used as a cardinal direction reference when the sun is set, directly aligns with the edge of the big dipper, and it is itself the tail of "The Little Dipper" which is itself a portion of Ursa Minor.
It got me that he didn't know the constellation.
Oregon's flag is actually quite unique: as I recall, it's the only state flag in the USA with a different front and rear design. On the back is a big golden beaver 😂
The back should just become the official flag
Of all the states I visited and lived in Arizona and Colorado might not have been the flashiest but definitely solid states to live in as well as being a resident of both at one time.
(PS minus AZ's education system lol)
