  • The Mens is an area of ancient woodland dominated by beech but with oaks and other trees typical of ancient woodland like midland hawthorn and wild service. It's name comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for common land, 'ge-m'nnes'.
This is a shot 10-mile walk through this ancient woodland and out to the banks of the River Arun before turning back into woodland. It is a walk that rewards the hiker with a feeling of magic and being in touch with history.

I agree with Osgar333, you can have music but preferably not when you are speaking as it does distract. But otherwise great video and very interesting love to see new walks to inspire me to try them out. Jules

During the second world war there was a Canadian Armoured Division billeted all around this part of West Sussex. Places they used included Hawkhurst, Knepp and Parham. On the South Downs near Kithurst are the remains of a Churchill Tank that was used for anti Tank gunnery practice by the Canadians, that part of the Downs being a Tank training area. On the seafront in Worthing opposite Grand Avenue where there was a 6 inch Gun Battery that was manned by the Canadian soldiers is a Memorial, it is easy to spot due to the Canadian Flag that flies over it.

Hi Tony. Lots of great information. Thank you so much for sharing again. I'm definitely wanting to check out Knepp and Parham as well...they aren't far from me, just waiting for some sun and some bluebells.

@@WilderhopeAdventures Hi C J, you will not be disappointed, If you have not visited before you will find Knepp an amazing place although, if as I sense you are wary of cattle, do be aware that in parts there are Sussex Longhorns roaming free. At Parham do visit the house as well as the Deer Park and Gardens. We must live quite close to each other, maybe our paths will cross one day when out walking :-))

@@tonym480 Thanks for this. I am wary of cattle as I know how much damage they can do, especially at this time of year with calves, and even more so with dogs. I raised cattle in the US but the cattle in the UK are a lot less fearful of people and can thus be more aggressive too. I will bear the free-roaming long-horns in mind and just be careful...but my dogs are both retired working cattle dogs and they will do their job if cattle get too aggressive or curious (charged on the Cleveland Way and the cattle got almost nose-to-nose with my dogs and backpack on the SDW before the dogs said "enough" and got them moving on)

@@WilderhopeAdventures True, but I would have like to have concentrated on what you were saying and sense the ambience of the walk you were on. For me the music is a distraction rather than complimentary I'm commentating from the view point of a writer and producer of commercials. Perhaps you could try taking the music out and see what you think. I might be right.
