  • In this episode of my series “ Walks in Sussex” I take a walk around Houghton Bridge & Houghton as well as a wander along the banks of the River Arun. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
Houghton is situated about 11.5 miles East of Chichester & 4 miles North of Arundel in the South Downs National Park.
I start my 4.5 mile circular walk from Amberley Museum, by Amberley Railway Station and take a wander through Houghton Bridge which is situated on the Eastern side of the River Arun. I then head North along the banks of the river before crossing over to the Western bank and joining the South Downs Way (SDW).
Leaving the SDW, I head South to Houghton and then on to the Monarchs Way to follow a path that initially takes me along the riverbank but then climbs steeply up to a ridge near the edge of Arundel Park.
My route then takes me to the tiny hamlet of South Stoke with it's delightful church before crossing the River Arun (again!) via South Stoke Bridge (also known as the White Bridge).
After crossing the “Gurkha Bridge” that spans what was once the original river (a loop was “cut off” by adding a diversion to ease navigation in 1839), I reach North Stoke which also has an enchanting church to explore.
My final leg takes me along the river bank back to Houghton Bridge to my last destination - The Bridge Inn.

So glad to have happened across your site. Your presentation is extremely informed & professional, whilst retaining a lovely relaxed feel. My wife and I covered some of your route back in September and watching your video really took me back. Keep up the good work.

This was lovely, Dave. I enjoyed the insides of the churches, especially the paintings on the walls and the antiquity in general. The little niches for the priests are really cool! And the hand carved into the bracket! The lighting inside all of the churches you have filmed has been just fine, not too dark at all...more "atmospheric" if anything - not to worry 😊 Loved that unique slender tower! And the houses in the village...in my next life I'm asking to be born in one of those in England! LOL! Or to discover a long-lost relative who might leave one to me now! I particularly enjoy that you give bits of history and that your walks are narrated. Thank you! Please keep filming!! Will never tire of being transported back across the Pond to visit virtually.

Great video of Houghton and surrounds. My 6 x Great-grandparents John & Martha were born & lived at Houghton. He was a church warden responsible for care of the poor.

I used to walk from Amberley (one train an hour!) quite a bit but your video was so informative about Houghton (and Bridge) and the Stokes I learnt a load of stuff I didn't know! Thanks for another great video. Logan is good at bridges!!

Nice work again, Mr Logan. Glad you didn't make yer mate Dave walk up that big hill from the bridge to the main road. I used to drive through there in a van some years ago, spectacular views, that often disappear into an enigmatic fog. You earned your crisp again. Thank you both.

The village of Houghton could almost be the one in Hampshire, near Stockbridge. Similar types of houses.

Yes, they are quite similar in many ways.
