Yes, Jacob got punished for his deception. He was punished by being given a father in law, who repeatedly deceived Jacob. Jacob fell victim to the same sin that that he committed. Jacob's cowardice & lack of faith were also required to be confronted by him, when he returned to face his brother Esau. Jacob had to have faith that God would provide him with the future his inheritance would have been given to him for, & believe that God would not allow his brother to spoil God's plan, by killing Jacob.

Joseph being sold into slavery was definitely not ambiguous. It created strife in Abraham's family. Abraham suspected his son's of murdering Joseph, which had been their first plan. Abraham lived fearing that his son's might also kill his son Benjamin, because they saw how he loved him as well. The possibility of trust being part of their household, had been destroyed. Their betrayal was clearly shown as wrong & evil. Joshua's rising through the ranks was in spite of their betrayal, not because of it. Without God gifting Joshua with deciphering dreams, he would have spent his life in prison.

I used to be a religious Jew, so I can provide a bit of context.
One of the things that I like about Judaism is its emphasis on personal interpretation. Whereas Christianity focuses a lot on finding the "true" meaning of the texts, the idea of the Torah is that it can be read and understood in different ways by different people. While a rabbi may view it from a more scholarly perspective, there are plenty of times in Jewish texts where respected rabbis learn from humble farmers who were able to read something differently, and most modern synagogues put emphasis on discussion among everyone, no matter the level of formal Jewish education. The exceptions are extremely clear sentences such as "don't eat pigs." There's not a lot of interpretation there.
A Jewish person will never question another's faith or say that they're interpreting something incorrectly, since that's not really a thing. While that can be great (and is why religious Jews tend to be more progressive than religious Christians), it also means that people like Abby often feel safer hiding behind Judaism as they spew their bigotry, because no one can say that they're wrong.

'Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.
The Lord shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father's house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes.
In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard.
      And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall nourish a young cow, and two sheep;
And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.
With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns.
And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.'
Sure does sound like him... I'm honestly losing my patience with you people, because you've got no clue what your own book says, plus, it's been used to support a whole list of shit that you might even disagree with, such as slavery, unequal rights for women, etc. I've seen my own nan talk about how boys were able to do what they wanted, but women were not, she hasn't got a clue that her own religion played a part in it...
What's sad is that she agrees that women should be stay-at-home mums and that that's all she wanted to be and that she's got no clue why women would wanna go against what God had made for them by being focused on career, etc, she also thinks that being gay or trans isn't natural and that it's the chemicals in the food and water that's got their brains messed up and that being gay or trans shouldn't be legal, because it goes against the Bible.
Sure, the Bible was also used to support equal rights for women and slaves, but a holy book that can be used to support both positions is not a holy book, it's just a book, that's all there is to be said about it.

“She puts Christian before Jew in her language”. I can speak on this too! Part of this has to do with the overlap of Christianity and conservative politics in the US. The second part is that a lot of US Jewish people have unintentionally absorbed Christian values and Christian ideas of God and Heaven through cultural osmosis. We’re a religious minority and some assimilation has already happened. Also, we’re used to deferring to Christian Americans to make them feel comfortable about the difference in beliefs.

I once asked them what it was like being sisters and wives and they both just kinda shrugged and said it was easier to deal with each other than the other wives as they had already grown up together and knew how to communicate. The church they used to attend would try to push the men to marry sisters because it was easy to convince them and they were less likely to fight.

1:30 I don't go much for Genesis. I much prefer The Hobbit, even over LoTR. However for anyone considering reading Genesis, I _do_ recommend the version by R. Crumb, fully illustrated in his usual style. He doesn't change a word of it. He just adds the much needed illustrations.
6:30 Yes, some of the family relationships in Genesis were quite interesting. Let's not forget Lot and his daughters. Genesis 19 : 30-38 That was an interesting episode.
16:30 Emma, it's interesting to hear you talk about the position of slaves and women at the same time. The daughters, women given to the men as "wives", effectively have no more freedom than the handmaidens, the slaves. The only difference is that the wives can have slaves as well as be slaves, whereas the slaves have virtually no possessions.
21:50 She sounds like she's struggling in her own life. It sounds like she's talking about herself. It will be interesting to see if she's able to maintain this "traditional role" and if not, how the threads come unraveled.

Oooh! This reminds me of one of my favorite books: *The Red Tent* by Anita Diamant!!
Such a good book, I *HIGHLY* recommend it. Diamant created a beautiful life story about Dinah, the daughter of Leah, the only daughter in the whole Jacob-Leah-Rachel-Billah-Zilpha family.
Dinah is such a small character in the Bible, she has no voice of her own, her little blip of a story isn’t even from her POV. And I love what Diamant did with this biblical character, what she did *for* Dinah’s story. Actually made her the main character and narrator of her own life.
Diamant herself is Jewish, but there’s nothing religious about this book (meaning no religious agenda, teachings, etc.) I say this so that no one is deterred from reading it, worried that religious beliefs might be forced on the reader. The beliefs and gods of Dinah’s parents are talked about, who they are, and sacred rituals practiced, but that’s it.
So, with that said, go read it if you haven’t yet, and if you have, leave a comment about it! I’m hoping there are lots of people who love this story as much as I do (but I’m certainly open to listening to any literary criticisms, lol!) ❤❤❤

I think what’s extra sad about Leah’s story is that it wasn’t just that she was made to marry Jacob, but back then the fact that she’s the one who slept with him on the wedding night (which is kind of a double SA situation on the father’s part if you think about it - Leah’s consent isn’t taken at all into account and Jacob did not consent to have sex with Leah) meant that she would be considered unmarriagable from then on if Jacob rejected her because she wasn’t a virgin anymore. So whether or not she wanted to be there at all, this was the only security she was going to be allowed.

The humming is because she has her laptop on a table and the microphone on the same table without using a spring-suspended mike stand. The microphone picks up the vibrations of the laptops fan and struggles trying to filter them out. That means the automatic noisegate is dialed up to eleven and produces these extreme cutoffs every time she stops to speak. Even if she doesn't know how to use the noisegate settings, she could have easily fixed it by just putting the microphone on a mousepad (which would have stopped the tables vibations from being passed on to the microphone).

This was a pretty nice deconstruction of all the contradicting things that some religious people want to use as living "correctly".
As for the thing you mentioned at 24:22 : Noise reduction through the use of noise gates, with noise gates' settings being set way to strict causing that type of "swallowing the first letter of every word".
We had a company built a new speech amplifying system in city hall (we broadcasted the town council meetings with local television) and even though the old system was also not adjusted properly, it got way WAY worse with the new system: it almost sounded like the noise gate was set so strict that it was swallowing the letters of each word someone was saying because it adjusted absolutely always because a pause had to be so short in order for it not to intervene, it would require someone to talk so much it would be a stupid tempo.
A lot of people are incapable of critically listening to the sound of what they record and just throw a noise-gate or noise reduction plugin on their audio track and think they are done. It's probably also why her voice sounds like a low-bitrate MP3: most default settings of noise reduction plugins cause this when filtering for hums and hisses.

I'm not religious because I already got that catholic trauma, got the t-shirt, left. But in that post-catholic traumatized state, hearing someone hint that the trouble in my family is god's design? Hey Emma, at 21:14 you ask whether god created something not perfect. Christians would have to say no I guess, but for Jews this might not have to be the case. In his book "A new kind of Christianity" Christian pastor Brian McLaren pointed out, that Jewish and Christian views on perfection actually differ a lot. He argues that the Christian point of view was strongly influenced by Greek philosophy, thus the definition would be: Perfection means, that any change would be a degration (or aggravation or deterioration, sorry, English is too hard). But the Jewish god created a garden and regarded it good - No Greek god would agree on that being perfect. So maybe Abby is somehow referring to that tradition of non-perfection, which would actually be quite interesting and different from (especially Evangelical) Christianity. Greetings, Ben

    Numbered list!
    1) Yes, you pretty much nailed it -- the person who processed the audio (or perhaps just a default setting in the recording software) used a noise gate to attempt to quiet things like the refrigerator compressor or an AC vent or the laundry machines in the next room. If you don't pay attention to the settings you get this result (noise under speech, clipped off word starts), which is often more distracting than just leaving the environmental noise stand!
    2) She's not a Christian or a Jew, she's part of the converging religion called "Conservatanity", which is pretty much just that same post-War vibe that you mention, anti-feminist anti-progress "golden age" that their kind get turgid for, all wrapped up in a vague monotheistic sky-daddy candy shell, easy to swallow, and that absolves one from the accountability of individual choice.
    3) So much of the lives of their kind is wrapped up in the avoidance of discomfort. They like distinct binary systems, or at least ones that can clearly be classified. But here we see the intense aversion to cognitive dissonance. Of course family strife is sh!tty, so why would God allow it? He's infallible, after all! How can these BOTH be true? Well, umm... AHA! That must mean that it's all part of His design! All part of The Plan!
    4) People like this are unconvinced of their own mediocrity, and overestimate their abilities. It's not so much that she's under-confident in her abilities as overconfident and reaching beyond her grasp. She figured, "All I need is a topic and I can wing it". Sure, first-timers can get this wrong and soon learn to write a script, but the fact that she still put this rambling mess out kinda indicates that she thinks it went swimmingly.

@@Mar-dk3mp I am curious, what is the difference between western godless people, and eastern godless people? Are the differences significant, or is it simply that the western godless and eastern godless simply laugh at different doctrines? Is it that a godless eastern person laughs at the idea that an eastern god gets seriously upset that when eastern women are in a public place with bare arms or shoulders, and that she has really offended Allah and has sinned terribly, whereas a godless western person laughs at the idea that an eastern god feels that if western people eat shrimp, or wears poly-cotton socks that Yahweh is deeply offended that they have done these terrible things, and have sinned terribly?
I don’t have to imagine being godless and soulless, as technically, I’m both godless and soulless. It has not been demonstrated that either exist. I don’t believe that any supernatural beings exist, do you believe that fairies, pixies, and goblins exist? I certainly don’t.
Once you can demonstrate that anyone/anything other than my parents had a hand in creating me then you will have a point, until then, I will ignore your silliness.

The photo club community that I am part of are fun, some are quiet and geeky, and there is also a Christian in our community, a nice lady actually. The cycling community I am part of is fun also, though I don’t get out as often as many there. It is fun as there is a real mix of characters.
I don’t understand what you are trying to convey when you state *"imagine to… deny God and run anytime you see the word "Atheist" in RUclips”* Personally, I view 'atheist' as simply a descriptor for who I am, I had no choice in being described in this way. _My_ take on being an atheist is, it's not _MY_ idea. I’m an atheist because of someone ELSE'S belief, not mine, it has nothing to do with me. I don't even want to be atheist.
With regard to you saying "May God bless you anyway.” I would rather I didn’t get blessed by a racist, bigoted, misogynistic god with a penchant for genocide, and who advocates for slavery. If getting blessed by a supernatural being, I would prefer it being someone with better morals. Santa Clause would be better, he loves kids from all races and backgrounds, and additionally doesn’t subjugate those who don’t believe that he exists, to an eternity of torment in the hell.
I hope you get blessed by your particular god, however immoral it may be.
