- To survive frigid temperatures, emperor penguins all converge on the same central point and begin to form a huddle. As those on the outside take the brunt of the cold, those on the inside take tiny steps that move the huddle in waves. No, it should be "between them and us". Prepositions take the object form of the preposition. (Doesn't "between they and we" sound weird to you? It should do. How about "Please go before I." or "She's looking at he."?)

It's not because they're looking out for the penguins on the outside, they rotate because the ones in the middle get too hot and want out.

Exactly, it gets well over 100 degrees in the central point of the huddles, thus the continuous movement from the center to the outer layers.
Nothing is higher on my bucket list than to huddle in a winter storm with a group of pinguinos.

When one penguin moves a little bit it creates a chain reaction in which all of the other penguins stay warm. It is called fluid dynamics.

They are so unusual. A freezing barren wasteland, no other animals, no plants, no nothing... and then suddenly a crowd of these incredibly cute birds 🤷

No plants, but no animals, not quite. The southern ocean are probably some of the most productive ocean in the polar regions thanks to the currents.

I think those closer to the center feel overly warm that want to cool down a bit. That excites the wave. The thermometer camera can estimate the temperature inside the colony.

Don't you see all that unidentified coloring on the ice? The whole continent is their bathroom and they smell as bad each other. They all haven't washed since the eggs were laid or until the spouses come back.
This is one of the most astounding things I've seen in my life. They form sort of a beehive, as if their minds are connected into one sentient entity. I guess this is the same mechanism that allows birds to fly in perfect formation in the sky.

I've just discovered that penguins have olso an "obscure" side. They can rape eachothers forming baby penguin band who rape, bite and sometimes kill other penguins. Some of them have sex also with dead penguins. But even seals have sex with penguins. I'm not kidding, search on the web

And with the baby in their foot! amazing. I can see some of them lying on 1:05 and 1:10, may be they couldn´t make it, or don´t have babies?
I guess it happens as long as this type of weather lasts. They change position when they are exposed to the weather. It is beautiful, but the beauty is a result of each individual exposing its neighbour to the weather
They'll huddle until winter ends, usually after 2 months, by which time the mother penguins come back and take the fathers' places so that he could go find food. And no, the penguin at 1:05 is lying since doing that reduces the body surface susceptible to the wind. He soon joined the others in the huddle.
Lau Ra the males on the ground are just resting but it could be risky as an egg would crack open so these could be males that have lost their own eggs or failed to breed
