yeah i think the original inspiration for the original design was heavily inspired by Studio gibli but I suppose oda changed it later to make it easier to draw

Big mom is still one of my favorite reveals, there’s just something about her, and I think a big reason is the massive Ghibli villain vibes she gives off.
I knew I wasn't the only one!! When I first saw Big Mom it remind me of the granny in Spirited Away ( with a lil mix of the witch in Howl's moving castle)!!

I noticed that Big Mom's voice is different compared to later episodes, so I checked the One Piece wiki and found out it is a different voice actress. In this episode, she was voiced by Toshiko Fujita, while in later episodes, she is voiced by Mami Koyama.

After rechecking the corresponding chapters, I think that Pudding and her 3rd eye being shown here was an anime only thing. Especially since in the manga, it was a huge reveal half way through the Whole Cake Island arc.

A lot of people don't realize that the pill found in the Tamatebako is the treasure that makes people age that Van der Decken was talking about giving to Siraoshi so she was old enough. That's a nice little foreshadowing

That was literally my first thought regarding the Tamato box. I was like “oh, they just mention it and then they never say it again…?” only to be shocked when I learned the pills were the contents of the box the whole time.
I’m surprised Hordy is still alive. Even if one pill accelerates a week of their life, Hordy ate at least 300 of them.
I mean, that’s only 6 years to be fair. Each pill probably takes 2-4 weeks at least.
Also Hordy accidentally ruining Decken’s plans 🤣
Hordys fate shows oda's opinion on those who can't let go of their hate and prejudice, that they are essentially doomed to carry their malcontent and hatred into old age with them while the younger generation and society at large moves on without them. Its not a coincidence he made them old over dead or bedbound as being the side-effect well that and it being a reference to a classic japanese fable.
To put it in perspective, if every supernova (as they are now) fought Big Mom simultaneously, she would barely take any damage.
blackbeard is among them so at all of their current strenghts I think they'd lose but put up a good fight (assuming they can fight together)

Hordy and his crew aging like that is a reference to an old Japanese folktale about a boy who visited an undersea palace and stayed several days and when he left he was given a gift called the temate box and he should not open it, which he did once he got home and it aged him 100 years instantly. Well that's the key points of the story

Madame Sharley's vision that Luffy would destroy Fishman Island seems more accurate after the events of these two episodes. He literally ate all 10 tonnes of Big Mom's tribute, then challenged her and claimed Fishman Island as his territory. What could possibly go wrong?

Jack you should watch the new One Piece prequel film called "'MONSTERS 103 mercies dragon damnation"'. It's an adaptation of a one-shot manga written by Oda before he wrote one piece and it's about Ryuma's life before he died and had his body revived at Thriller Bark.

Big Mom feels like she was retconned or rewritten from an extremely creepy old woman with stomach acid related powers, to what she ended up actually being.
Jack's reaction to Big Mom was as expected for him to freak out though if only he knew the real terror is yet to come so we'll have to see what he thinks of it when it starts plus hope he knows that when they say Ling Ling most viewers actually say Lin-Lin just like saying Big Mom instead of big mam so thought Jack should know that.

It seems like no one mentions it yet but this fishmen island is referencing a little about Japan's famous folklore. I have seen so many versions of it so mine might not be accurate but it's something like this:
A poor fisherman saved a dying turtle. The turtle felt grateful and invited the fisherman home. The home was Ryugu Palace and the turtle was a beautiful lady. The guy partied and enjoyed a lot at Ryugu Palace. Before leaving the girl asked him to choose a box, one big one small. There's so many variations I forgot which one he chose, or he steal or he choose both, or the girl didnt ask him to choose but just gave it to him. Anyway, one of the boxes was Tamate box and when he opened it he grew old immediately and returned back to his place without knowing how to get back to Ryugu Palace anymore. Some say he grew old because he spent so many years at Ryugu Palace while remaining young but after returning all his age caught up to him.
A magical but melancholic story.
