The original "Set Me Free" is a song of his bandmate SUGA from his second mix-tape "D-2". He just released a making-of video for this MV where he talks about it's theme and meaning. Most BTS songs are rarely just surface level. Jimin is dealing with his INNER turmoil and self doubt (as well as the haters). He borrowed a line from the BTS song "ON" (same choreographer as this- Sienna Lalau) "Gotta go insane to stay sane". The director of this MV also directed SUGA's solo within BTS "Interlude: Shadow".

@@btsmylife9879 Jimin said in that interview that SUGA's "Set Me Free" was like the earlier stage while his was the next step (hence PT. 2). Also... I'm not sure I'm understanding your comment entirely... I simply said that there is no Pt.1 from Jimin and that he named his "Pt.2" because SUGA already has a song called "Set Me Free"... I didn't say they were correlated. The making-of MV video was in regards to JIMIN's "Set Me Free"... the comment had nothing to do with SUGA's song.

Set me free is not about breaking free from BTS, but breaking free from himself, from his past struggles and the way people and opponents want to stuck him in a box. Jimin had a long and difficult journey for loving himself, playing with his différents "faces" /images/filters. He recently said : "« "Set Me Free Pt.2 was created when I was feeling lost and depressed. I was determined to overcome those feelings and had lots of those thoughts. It's a song that contains a lot of my emotions from then. Just like how we overcome challenges and get lost again. There are things we can't escape from as if we're on a hamster wheel. That's what I wanted to express". There is a lot to say about this masterpiece, the links with one of his previous song "Lie", the panopticon setting, the lightning pulsing like a deep breathe, the choreography of course, the shell/spiral/caterpillar/cocoon/Fibonaci sequence, the dialogue between Jimin's inner voices : the angry one with autotune, the soft and hopeful one without, the lyrics ... but I will let this task to other fellow Armys who speak a better english than me. Aniway, I'm glad you react to Jimin's solo and I enjoy your reaction. "you're nice, keep going" (Jimin's quote ;) )

@@nickforell1 3:46 You have interesting interpretation of SET ME FREE but I don't think it's about breaking away from the band and I'll explain it to you why
First of all the MV's background is quite strange. Cause it looks exactly like they are in PANOPTICON which is a type of prison wherein all the cells are visible from the center of the building. The prisoners in the cell however can never tell if they are being guarded or not, which gives the eerie feeling that someone is always watching you even if it's the contrary.
This is basically symbolizing how they live their life as an idol
It might be just a coincidence however the Set Me Free Pt.2 poster is exactly the same thing, the background image represents a panopticon hence just like the first line of Serendipity (Jimin's solo song) "None of this is a coincidence"
Also I don't think the set me free he is referring to is to break away from the band or expanding his solo music career
But from the hate and everything else he has been dealing with throughout the years.
It must be noted that Jimin is the most hated member in BTS and he has suffered a lot like receiving death threats and etc. but anyways for me I guess this is just his way of breaking free of himself.
Yes, I typed it right, it's himself
The 'him' that others are trying to portray as him and the part of 'him' that he was always facing against.
It's quite complex to explain. But should I just say that his greatest opponent was always himself? Not the haters, or whatever there is.
From his first solo song alone called Lie
He already showed that he is in inner conflict with himself and he can't escape
And that lie continues to grow in Love yourself: Serendipity and everything after that. But it stopped in Map of the Soul: Shadow when he released his third solo song Filter cause he accepted that lie, or should I say he embraced that lie hence it's no longer a lie so in Set me Free, he is finally freeing himself.
Hence the album title "Face", not just the face as in the facial features of a person cause I'm pretty sure that what other people would mostly think, but anyways the "face" he is referring to is also "face" as in to face something.
      Face yourself
      Face your shadow
      Face your face
I guess that's probably why in the covers of his face album, there's this circles resembling ripples of water
Cause when you look at the ripples of water, you would FACE the reflection of your FACE
      Which is genius 👏
Unfortunately, a lot of people wouldn't get it and would just look at his cover like it's just a plain cover with no creativity or whatsoever.
Without knowing it's actually a masterpiece.
If you still think this songs aren't connected to the other songs, you should look at the lyrics cause he literally copied the line "Going insane to stay sane" from ON by BTS which talks about fighting and embracing the pain. Secondly, is the
choreography. He also recreated the iconic choreography in 'Lie' were he is lifted up while he sang the lines "Caught it a lie, please find the me when I was pure, I can't escape from this lie, please bring me back my smile"
"Caught in a lie, please take me out of this hell, I CAN'T ESCAPE from his pain, please save me I'm being punished"
Anyways, Set Me Free is literally like Lie part 2, cause he is finally breaking free from his cocoon. And now he is free like a butterfly.
Also the great similarities between lie and Set me Free pt.2 is the creation of the iconic screaming or howling of voices in the background.
Also y'all might not notice this but in the entire choreography of Set Me Free pt.2, he's like recreating the life cycle of a butterfly. In the beginning he's in the center of the backup dancers, the dancers being the leaf and him being an egg, afterwards the dancers would form like round like formation (a.k.a the Fibonacci spiral "Nature's Universal Rule in short THE GOLDEN RATIO) the spiral is found throughout nature and put simply represents our ever evolving journey in life.
Also in that spiral also symbolize a caterpillar being curled up, then at the end of the MV they would surround him and lift him up pretty much looking like a cocoon and when he broke free he already changed outfit (a.k.a he transformed like a butterfly)
( Those actions are like METAMORPHOSIS of a butterfly which also means the change of form in an individual after hatching or birth)
It's also interesting how the surprise outfit change is also connected to his third solo song Filter were he 'magicaly, changes clothes.
Just like the changes of outfits in Filter, his clothing in this MV gradually changes, from fully clothed, till he gradually revealed some of his skin, till in the 2nd verse were he fully exposed his skin with all these tattoos written in German from a german poem by Rainer Maria Rilke in the late 1800s that says: "I live my life in ever-widening circles that stretch themselves out of all things, I won't perhaps complete the last one but I intend on trying"
"I circle for thousands of years and I don't know, yet am I a falcon, a storm, or a might song".
      The poem ask 3 questions:
      1. Am I a falcon that meant to fly above everyone
      2. Am I an upcoming storm meant to destroy everyone
      3. Or am I a great song meant for everyone to love
Anyways when he he was lifted, he magically re-appeared with white clothes.
So yeah, the changes of outfits just represents the gradual change or the growth of himself and the last part is were he completely broke free (He's not just revealing his skin to show off)
Lastly, I'll explain why he decides to symbolize himself as a butterfly and not other animals like a bird that symbolize freedom.
The reason is simple, he is afraid of butterflies.
      So technically FACE your fears
      Embrace your shadow and
become what you are afraid of
In his case, the butterfly which is himself
So yeah the MV and the song is not as simple as most people think. It has lots and lots of layers and for all the people who doesn't really know much about him, I completely understand that they won't like it or take this song too seriously.
I've already seen a lot of people that had criticize this song cause he's using "too much auto tune" even though it's obvious that it's for artistic purposes 🙄.
Also don't get me started about that so called mis used word "OPPS". And the outfit being the same with the back-up dancers complaints.
Anyways, it doesn't really matter now cause he already said the f word to all of his opposition so he no longer gives a damn 👏👏.
This is truly a character development.
      "Look at me now
I won't stop even if they mock me
      Going insane to stay sane
Raise your hands for the past me
      Now set me Free "

He is known for being very hard on himself in the past, so now he said he tried to express repressed feelings in this album, as he always tried to be very positive, but also has a darker side like everyone . For me the “set me free” is not about solo career but about overcoming the pressure he felt to be a certain way, now he is much more mature so “fu*k all your opinions” as the lyrics say. They do plan to get back after the military, but it will be a while. They are very very supportive of one another so don’t expect to see one of them talking bad about BTS or the other members, as I know it happens often in that industry.

"Opps" is slang for "opponents" or "enemies". The use of profanity in this phrase is for emphasis and can be considered vulgar or offensive in some contexts. 💜

❣️ Jimin’s “Set Me Free Pt.2’, it’s everything & more then I could hope for, Jimin’s amazing artistry, his so beyond spectacular,, so mesmerizing, phenomenal performance! The song, Jimin’s vocals, his dancing, the amazing choreography, also the amazing backup dancers, the lyrics he wrote, the music he composed as well as being involved in the production! Jimin was hands on, involved with every facet! No wonder the in-house legendary producer for BigHit Pdogg, who worked with Jimin throughout the whole album, stated that “in 2023 K-pop will be ended by Park Jimin”! Seeing this makes me that much more excited, waiting in anticipation for release of the full album, Jimin’s “FACE” on March 24, along with his other, main song ‘Like Crazy’ MV. Though Jimin’s song ‘Set Me Free Pt.2’, blew me away , meeting all my expectations & then some, I was also not totally surprised, because indeed Jimin is now ‘set free’ from the confines of being part of a group, to now be able to open up full throttle and ‘finally’ be able to release all that he held back for so many yrs! Jimin has been involved in every facet of creating this album! Hands on all the way, perfectionist that he is, including writing lyrics, composing, as well as being heavily involved in production! Jimin’s true, real, inner self will be finally seen in all its raw, authentic, amazing, heartfelt, passionate, emotional, sincere glory! This is aside from Jimin’s full range, hardly ever being shown, aside from high notes, but being finally able to show his full registry, mid range as well as lower registry as well! I’ve always been so frustrated not being able to see as well as hear Jimin’s full capacity of talent. So often not being fully taken advantage of, but that comes with being part of a group, that has every single member having so much talent that it’s been so limiting for Jimin, especially him being so selfless, making a point of having others shine before himself. Now the spotlight will be just on him! Though we’ve seen Jimin’s amazingly spectacular, so mesmerizingly outstanding solo performances before. But now, as Jimin himself, mentioned, he’ll indeed be showing the depth of his raw inner self! Jimin has also said that with all the members now exploring & expressing their own individual talent , it will just make BTS that much stronger when they come back together as a group! In an interview Jimin explained: "I tried to express the grand scale of the song and [the ideas of] determination, passion, and overcoming. “Set me free” means setting myself free, so I thought it was important that I be the one to set myself free - not someone else. In the end, I’m the one who has to set myself free. I would say the song has the energy of a light in the darkness. I wanted to express that kind of picture everyone has in their head - a ray of light coming into the darkness is the only thing you can see. If I had to say specific colors, I’d say black and white."

To get a bigger understanding I recommend Jimins Lie and the performance. I’m Lie he talks about how he can’t seem to save himself or free himself and he begs for someone to save him. He’s historically had a lot of issues with perfectionism, self criticism, self hatred, body issues, and there were certain people out there who would say less than helpful things to him. I believe that this song is his message to us that he is saving himself from the demons in his mind. In his performance of lie he is also lifted up by a group and seems to be swallowed up. But this time it seems more triumphant.

Jimin is such an interesting guy. Though wouldn't say I've been ARMY since BTS's debut back in 2013, I was into other kpop at the time, and thus peripherally aware of them--enough to see how they changed over the years. At the outset, Jimin was so different than he is today--all muscles and bravado, trying so hard to fit into a hypermasculine mold that we came to learn is NOT him. 😄
Out of all the members, I think he stands out as slightly different. His physical appearance is more delicate--even pretty, his voice is a higher register, his style of dancing is more fluid and graceful (with his contemporary/modern dance background instead of hip hop). He has come to embrace androgyny as one of his facets. And he probably had the highest emotional intelligence out of all the members. His personality is really warm and bubbly, and he's so affectionate, he basically morphs into human saran wrap when he's around the other members.
And the evolution has worked for him--he's very well loved. Different members of BTS have varying levels of popularity around the world (Jungkook and V get a lot of attention in the west), but back home in Korea, Jimin is THE "It Boy." He's just got a really special something that endears him to the public and his fans.
Of course, the flip side of all this that Jimin is the target for ridiculous amounts of hate. Whether it's because of his differences, his popularity, or something else, who knows... but I can't even imagine what it must feel like to be the target of some of the vitriol he gets (like, he's just had to get used to death threats as a part of life). On top of that, I know a lot of the other comments talked about Jimin's struggles with self-worth, and yeah. It's really sad that the kindest member of the band--the one known for going out of his way to comfort the others when they struggle--can't turn any of that kindness on himself. Basically, he gets hate both from without and within.
So... seeing him write and perform a song like this is truly cathartic. We get to see him evolve further into something less "idol," and more human--complete with uncensored aggression and a certain rawness... stuff we almost NEVER see from him. Like, we knew he could be fierce (he's the martial artist, remember), but most of his solo releases before have been either sugary-sweet (Serendipity, Promise) or flirty (Filter). Set Me Free goes hard!
I can't wait to see the rest of what he has for us on his album.

Thank you for your reaction! I really enjoyed it. I think BTS goes out of their way to leave meanings ambiguous and never confirm anything (apart from a few outstanding exceptions) because they think everyone's analysis and perspective is valid. Here's my two cents: I personally didn't think that Jimin was talking about breaking off from BTS - in the making video for this mv (which was released today and you can totally go watch), he says he wrote this song while he was feeling lost and depressed and it was like being stuck on a hamster wheel, which corresponds to the shape of the set. Given his history - which it's definitely not fair to expect you to know about or consider in your reactions yet - I believe this song was about breaking away from himself in a lot of ways; his worry about what people think, his experiences with hate and racism and mistreatment, his struggles with his image, his difficulties with idol life, etc. I think it was about accepting himself on a new level and finding strength and confidence and empowerment in that freedom. Obviously though, I don't know his exact thoughts and this is just a theory! Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it and you're right, it is an absolute banger that deserves all of the attention it's receiving and more! As a side note, I think you haven't yet seen enough of the members' dynamic to quite understand just how devoted they are to each other; to say they adore each other is a major understatement. Their CEO once said, "they dyingly love each other". They are so so supportive of each other's solo work and are so proud of each other, and they've all also expressed how much they miss each other during their solo endeavors and how excited they are to do music as a group again - they've said they'll be back together eventually and they've never broken a promise yet, so I trust them! They'll be back, and for now they're each taking some much needed time to express themselves individually, but their love for each other is just as strong as it's always been and I have no doubt whatsoever that they'll be brothers to the grave. (It's also worth considering that this break from group work is LITERALLY BECAUSE they have to go to the military - it was supposed to happen in 2020 but then the pandemic messed everything up, but people forget that it's been planned for a while - it isn't because they don't like being in BTS or because they're tired of each other). Sorry for my rant 😅 I hope you know that you said nothing offensive or upsetting, I just have a lot of opinions! I look forward to your next reaction! Thank you! 💜

Thank you for the reaction! BTS has not broken up...they will pursue solo activities while all eventually doing military service and plan to come back as a group in 2025. Of course, life happens but that is the stated plan. I do think there is a large element of self reflection and getting away from his own self critism...he has been self critical in the past. I'm not saying you cannot interpret things your own way but I do think he had some intention to express his inner discussion.

I actually believe that he's also directing this to the hate he's received.
He is probably one of the most hated idols in the industry and receives death threats daily. His family has even been targeted too.
Everyday on every platform you will come across the most vilest things said about Jimin and it's honestly so heartbreaking. They mock him for his vocals (being too high) and his stunning looks often calling him a woman because he is so pretty. The dancers I believe are his and inner self, the different tones in the vocals with the auto tuned was having a conversation with his heavenly vocals hence why so heavily auto tuned. Yep, there's a full story behind this MV but he did state that this was written at a time he felt lost and depressed so you can feel it, he portrayed his emotions in every aspect of this song and MV.

3:46 You have interesting interpretation of SET ME FREE but I don't think it's about breaking away from the band and I'll explain it to you why

@@nickforell1 I also forgot to mention why Jimin used a lot of auto-tune in this song, it's not just for artistic purposes only
If you notice in some parts there's this call and response sections so technically he's also trying to duet with himself
The one in Auto tune represents his thoughts and the one without is his real voice
And in the ending part, the auto-tune suddenly gets muffled when he was being surrounded cause that's when he's like being trapped in a cocoon

I had the same thought... the backdancers representing his thoughts, his feelings: chaotic at the beginning, while the song goes on, they are more organized, but still not letting him "escape". At the end, once they are all stand up, dancing in the same wave and looking up, they are ready to accomplish the transformation and finally release the butterfly.
Thanks for your reaction! There is so much to react! Before the announcement about the alistment they alread had a huge discography, but after it, woooow, it's like a flood of masterpieces!!
They want to be sure we won't have reasons to forget them (as it was possible hehehe)

If you follow BTS' journey and see a lot of behind the scene, you will find that Jimin always hard to himself. He always feels that he is not good enough (He is so much better now).
In this song, Jimin telling us about his struggles.
In this song, you hear so many different voices of Jimin and all the heavy auto tune is showing how Jimin is trying to find his voice. It is not because he can't sing but it's about the concept that he has for his song.
The choreography also shows how he struggles to get out of the darkness and at the end how he finally free (he is in white clothe)
The tattoo on his body also connected to this. It is a German poem
This was the poem written on Jimin's chest by Ranier Maria Rilke.
“I live my life in widening circles”
    Rainer Maria Rilke
Ich lebe mein Leben in wachsenden Ringen,
die sich über die Dinge ziehn.
Ich werde den letzten vielleicht nicht vollbringen,
    aber versuchen will ich ihn.
Ich kreise um Gott, um den uralten Turm,
    und ich kreise jahrtausendelang;
und ich weiß noch nicht: bin ich ein Falke, ein Sturm
    oder ein großer Gesang.
I live my life in ever widening circles,
each superseding all the previous ones.
Perhaps I never shall succeed in reaching
the final circle, but attempt I will.
I circle around God, the ancient tower,
and have been circling for a thousand years,
and still I do not know: am I a falcon,
a storm, or a continuing great song?
You can see circle in the room and ceiling, dark and light, black and white, trapped?, chaos, struggle, etc.
    It is ART.

The choreo matches the song so well. Order from chaos. And the use of voice modulation (which he doesn't need) so it makes it sound like a different/inner voice talking to him. So cool. And this was just a pre-release! His main single is out on Friday and I have a feeling it is going to be epic!

I have posted this to weverse as well but I have been thinking a lot about what the choreography and dancers represent and I think it's a critique of being an artist trying to survive in the fandom culture and how it can both at times lift you up and devour you. At times the choreo can feel both protective and destructive, supportive and harsh, frenzied and controlled/coordinated. I think these juxtapositions are what make it so captivating.

Jimin would never want to be free from BTS. None of them. They always say it, BTS is their identity. Never say things like they want to run away, or they don't like each other, because it is not true. They love each other and they love army. They will be back as a group again from 2025, hopefully until forever.

Going insane to stay sane is a callback to ON - which you have already seen. Butterfly is a older song by BTS and has been mentioned in several members solo works lately. I would recommend watching official videos - but also dance practices - you will see their full talent!!! Also award show performances are a must as the stages are exceptional!! Have fun on your journey from a "older" ARMY who has seen a lot of live music, but seeing BTS live was on a whole other level!

You are so Brave. To jump into something current without having any background or context to understand what he's saying. I read through some of the comments, and Army know their stuff. However, specifically Jimin is working on himself. To set himself free, to set his mindset free, to set his old thoughts away. And yes his opposition away. The best thing to do is find an article where Jimin himself...in his own words...explains what he was trying to say and portray. If you didn't know..the dance practice has already been dropped. You can watch it in detail without the distraction of the set, lighting, costume, camera edits, and some camera angles. Also his hair specially his bangs are shorter so you can see his eyes and facial expressions. Good for you for being brave!

He also play guitar on it and Jungkook sings background vocals. Trust me, You don’t want to miss it.

YOU ARE ARMY: baby ARMY! Each day you do BTS, you’ll grow more & more. TV show “Run, BTS” is hilarious. You can REALLY see how they are individually & together. It is subtitled, however, it goes by so quick & it has the Korean in the same line. Just read the English. It has extra impertinent words. As close as we can get to KNOWING THEM. Also, IN THE SOOP, trips away together. Same thing on subtitles. I love your reactions, Nick. Can tell you are generally impressed & appreciate.

His whole album, Face, are his pandemic stories, so it's pretty dark. It's about how he spiraled into depression and was drinking too much and not sharing this with anyone because the only people he thought would understand were his bandmates and he knew they were also struggling and didn't want to burden them. This album was part of his work in processing all of this.
