For me, it is never the clothes that are the issue with packing; its more the toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, double cleansers, combs, sunscreens etc... would love to see good tips for that :-)
Wet wipes! I get gentle ones with rosewater for face and hands. Intim wipes for the other end. A small rosewater spray for refreshment. Free samples of face and eye cream. On a recent week's trip, I had no opportunity for shampooing my hair. So I called in at a hairdresser's for a shampoo and blow dry. For €15! In Paris!
Some options: 1. Decant your faves into smaller containers 2. most skincare companies do travel sizes (tatcha, Tata Harper, Trinny London etc) 3. Many skincare companies have free sample sizes, for example anytime I buy something from Aesop I ask for some samples (they’ll usually give you between 4 and 8) and I save those in my travel toiletries bag.
When I get back from a trip, I take out everything I actually used while away and make a list of with notes about what type of trip and how long it was for. I can then use the list as a packing guide for future trips. I keep the lists in the suitcase so I can always find when needed 😊
I've been guilty of both under packing and over packing. It's so hard to get it right. When I overpack, travel day is a pain. When I underpack, I usually end up being cold... or dirty! I have refined my packing quite a bit, and it turns out my packing closely resembles this, and I didn't even know this was a thing! Love it. Thanks for the tips!
I once traveled for 3 weeks with just 10 items of clothes, 2 pairs of shoes, and 1 purse. I had just the right amount: 2 pants, 2 skirts, 1 dress, 4 tops, 1 jacket, sandals, sneakers, 1 earrings, 1 neckless. Color scheme was black & white.
Just packed for a 12day trip to Copenhagen with this in mind. I did 7 tops (from tank tops to one heavier sweater), 3 dresses, 3 pairs of shoes, 2 bottoms. Still ended up with 15 items all together and I am so proud of myself. I don't think I have ever packed this lightly 😊. Thank you!
I’ve been backpacking since my early 20s & I still swear by this packing/planning technique! I usually do similar composition for the clothes I bring & adjust based on the season/activities I will be doing. For longer trips (>2 weeks), I would bring clothes enough for 7 days because I can almost always find a laundry place or wash them myself!
I would have loved to see you pack all that. I can’t see how the 15 essentials, plus all the extras, and toiletries, could fit into one carry on. I barely have room to pack one extra pair of shoes and I think you had 3! But I’d love to be proven wrong!
Well, I assume she'll be wearing the biggest items on the plane. So the shoes in the carry-on would be the sandals which do not take up to much space and you can fill in the space between the heels with things like underwear and socks. She'll probably also put on the blazer, the sweater and a pair of jeans. Also: minimize the toiletries. For most holidays, you can find toothpaste, shampoo, soap etc on location.
@@sharonconnolly3644I roll up each item and lay them next to each other and then stack a second layer of clothes. I put the tops on one side and bottoms on the other. Rolling keeps them from wrinkling and they are easy to see without taking items out. I bought a flat cosmetic case which holds all my toiletries and hangs. I lay my shoes on top or in the crevices. I used this when traveling through Europe and I wash items in the sink or a washer/dryer when they are available in a hotel. Soo easy when traveling by plane and trains!
I’m a dress person. For a hot summer trip, I prefer taking five lightweight, cotton or rayon knit dresses for daytime. I take two or three solid-color, simple, silk dresses for evening with a metallic bag and shoes that works with all of them. They’re super-lightweight, take up little room, dry fast and can just be dampened to dewrinkle them. With something like a lightweight cotton knit jacket, sneakers and sandals for day and one swimsuit, I’m covered. Plus a daytime handbag and a small collection of accessories like jewelry and scarves, no need to skimp on those. I like to buy a locally-made straw sunhat on the first day, rather than trying to pack one.
Agree, in seriously hot weather as has been the case in Europe and Northern America, the flimsiest materials will work. Jeans are hell in that kind of weather, hot in summer and cold in winter, jeans are definitely just spring and summer wear. You can pack longjohns for wearing underneath them however if going to a cold environment. Also jeans are very uncomfortable in flight. I hate them for travel. Cargo pants which you can roll up are far better JIMO.
I do the same: dresses no leggings. I also sometimes do 2 leggings + 3 coloured tunics + 3 sleeveless T-shirts. Plus a cardigan and a blazer. For the plane I wear pants, a shirt and neutral pullover (the heaviest items). I wear the heaviest shoes and add max. 2 more pairs + slippers. I dress up the neutral pullover with. Light scarf. And I bring a warm, large scarf that doubles as a blanket in the train.
great tip! I lived on a similar amount of clothes for 6 months across both winter & summer in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. One pair of blue jeans was more than enough for me.
I always used 4-3-2 to pack. That is 4 tops, 3 bottoms and 2 outer pieces (cardigan, jacket or blazer). I think that 5-4-3-2-1 is even better. I always bring 3 pairs of shoes. On my last trip, I found that 3 pairs of pants were too little for a 40 day trip! So it will be easy to adapt. Thanks for the tips. Chris
Love that idea too! Actually, I think the countdown can be put together in many variations - maybe even 654321 if you’re away for longer and you need more items! The possibilities are endless which I find so clever about this method 😍🙌🏻 love a good template like this! Thanks for sharing your experience too! Signe xx
I also like 5-4-3-2-1 method, but in my case it is 5 tops (2 tees, 1 jacket, 1 shirt, 1 tank top), 4 bottoms (1 pants, 1 shorts, 1 skirt and 1 dress), 3 shoes (sneakers, flip -flops, sandals), 2 bikinies (interchangeable tops and bottoms), 1 shopper bag. I may add one clutch and one belt, too.
I am packing for my trip to South Korea and this is very useful. It's also important to stay true to my own style even when travelling abroad. Thanks for the useful video.
Like you, I use an IKEA clothes rail to work out the clothes I will take on a trip - regardless of whether its a short local holiday or one overseas. I usually start pulling out clothes from my wardrobe a couple of weeks before the holiday so there’s time to change, or reduce, my packing. I also take photos of outfits to reference while I’m on holiday and make a final packing list. I then reuse that list (with relevant tweaks) on my subsequent holidays as items like technology and toiletries don’t change much. PS love your travel capsule! 🤗🇦🇺
This video came up as an idea for me. I am visiting my daughter out of the country soon for three weeks and do so in a carry on only. This was so helpful the way you presented it with the 5,4,3,2,1 method and with your photo frames. I have never seen this done before. It was very helpful. To answer previous questions about other essentials, most places have blow dryers. All my beauty and face products I pack in small containers. I also minimize those to some extent. What takes me room is vitamins, medicine, night guard, inhaler, IPad, etc. and I pack those in my large purse. New subscriber here! 😀
Love this method!! I already have a document with tried and tested outfit ideas but this sounds even better. I will definitely try this. Thanks Signe x
Generally, I think every top should go with every bottom, if possible. I take black bottoms and a pair of blue jeans. On my last trip to Europe, my tops were various solid colors and black. My merino wool cardigan was black and my trenchcoat was black. Black shoes. I had a couple of silk scarves that went with several colors of my tops. There was nowhere I couldn't go, with the exception of a black tie event, which wasn't on the schedule. 😊
I have a 5-week trip in Sept and Oct including a 10-day cruise to St Laurence River in Canada. I go by car, plane, ship, bus, and railroad. And I also take 3 senior in their 80’s. I have to pack light and stealth.
When we're getting ready for our yearly trips, I bring up the garment rack a couple weeks before we go & start pulling & deciding 'what to take', then the BIG suitcase & garment bag comes out, along with our carry-on & personal bags... This year we're going to Boston & Cape Cod for a week, once again I pulled out the garment rack, but this time within 20 minutes, using the '5 4 3 2 1, I was done. I found a practically new carry-on suitcase at a consignment shop & the items not mentioned, (toiletries, undergarments, cosmetic case & medications), EVERYTHING will fit in that carry-on, so Hubby can have the BIG suitcase & we can leave the garment bag at home :) My 'personal bag' will be my Coach town tote, I can put my laptop & our 'important papers' in that, then a smaller bag in the carry-on for when we get there. We always print out our flight & lodging papers, that way if there's a sketchy internet/wifi connection, we still have that paper as a backup & there have been times that it's come in handy to have it on paper, not just on the phone. We use a pencil case that has 2 compartments, one for the papers & the front for our passports for when we go on cruises. We wait with the 'non-essential' liquids, (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, sunscreens) until we get where we're going, then we find a Walgreens or Walmart & get the big bottles there. With both of us using them, within a week they're close to if not empty anyway so we can just toss them when we pack to go back home. :)
The main thing is to pack very good quality clothes that will last the distance. Also wash and dry them inside out. They simply wear better, and also wear good quality shoes and handbag. This will help you not look too much of a tourist and more of a local. Avoid synthetics where possible, they stink up in no time!
I have viewed a few of your videos because I like your minimalist approach. Even though I am not a minimalist yet, I am gaining a lot of inspiration from your presentations. I finally decided to subscribe to your channel. The 5-4-3-2-1 approach to packing sounds brilliant. I will need to try it. I also like the way you post photos of your looks on your phone. Nice video , thank you. Never heard of this, will try next time. Love the dark blue set (shorts & top) at the end of the video. Please share where did you buy :)
Great advice for your daily wear clothes, but I have to pack more workout clothes and pajamas. I like to change my pjs every 3 days. I sweat a lot when I work out. Hand washing one set of workout gear doesn’t guarantee they will be dry the following day.
I dream the day I could pack as you easily packed with no worry exceeding the only 8 kgs allowed by the international airlines .Love your video by the way.
There is a shirt presented at 2:39. It is blue button with collar, long sleeve rolled up. I love it and would like to buy one for my wardrobe. What is the brand, style, fabric? Thank you!
How would this work going on a cruise? You need clothes for day, then another type for evening. Plus you’re usually seeing the same people every day-especially when you go to dinner with the same people every night. We go for 14+ day cruises, so it’s hard to decide the combination, and still pack light.
My husband and I cruise three to four times a year, I’m thinking of adapting this method for day and night - 5 each day and night tops, 4 shorts, 4 pants/skirts, 3 shoes, 3 bathing suits, 2 jackets- one day, one night, 1 cover up. A few accessories, minimal toiletries, travel sized flat iron, and Seint makeup that wears and travels like a dream.
This seems like enough clothes to live indefinitely, if you're minimalist. Let alone for a holiday. How will all this fit in a standard suitcase, though? Seems very bulky. I'd be interested to know how you pack these items.
If you take five tops do you do a wash when you’re there if away for ten days? Four bottoms sounds enough for ten days without washing but five tops isn’t!
5 tops can last me 25 days - I can wear the same top for at least 5 days- longer in the winter. I shower myself and clean underwear every day, not my clothes 😊. Now I’m worried- should I be washing my clothes after wearing them only once? 😅
I need anyone’s suggestions on traveling with a chronic illness and pain (need class and comfort), and also I have chronic illnesses and pain, so I need to bring meds and tinctures for Lyme. I don’t know how to pack the tinctures, or what to put them in. Thanks!
Great tips!!! I also travel with very few items. I take 1 pair of confort shoes ( spanish espadriles)that match with all my outfits and my slippers. Spanish espadriles are good shoes for walking and look great with skirts, trousers and dresses ) day and night. Only 1 purse that matches ALL.
I love you videos! Thank you so much! One question..when packing do you prefer rolling your clothes or folding? I have tried both but really can not decide what works best. I have seen where people fold their entire outfit for the day..bra undies included so it all together. I might try this but not sure if it will take up more or less room! Ill let you know!:
It’s some years old and found it from a private seller on Etsy 🥰 here is a similar one: www.etsy.com/dk-en/listing/1489714105/leather-jewelry-roll-personalized
The secret to not overpack is to get rid of the “just in case” mentality. Plan all your outfits by outings and stick to it. Unless you’re going to a deserted island, there are places anywhere in the world where you could buy things, if needed. The same with packing things like shampoo/conditioner/soap and toiletries in general. Buy travel sizes if you think you won’t be able to find your favorite brand at destination. If you think you could, buy there! I can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen getting confiscated WHOLE bottles of shampoo or (insert any product here) from their carry-on, or have bottles explode inside their luggage cause they need to bring everything and more for a week vacation…WTH
Omg- pack NOTHING! 😅 Buy all the cool clothes at your destination( if time allows) we traveled 3 week around Europe this summer with just backpacks and regretted it - could have bought high quality wardrobe for very reasonable price. Also every country has it’s own “fashion” so it’s kinds cool to fit in with locally purchased clothing
For me, it is never the clothes that are the issue with packing; its more the toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, double cleansers, combs, sunscreens etc... would love to see good tips for that :-)

This is a very nicely done video. Jeans are not suitable for travel. Heavy. Hot in summer, cold in winter and take forever to dry if they get wet.
I prefer jeans to skirts because of pockets and durability. Also I wear jeans year round even in Florida.
@@jenniferh1416I never wear skirts. There are many other pants available besides jeans.

This seems like enough clothes to live indefinitely, if you're minimalist. Let alone for a holiday. How will all this fit in a standard suitcase, though? Seems very bulky. I'd be interested to know how you pack these items.
Do you wash some items ? What if you get sweaty or you stain your clothes ?
Thank you so much Signe for this great tips.❤
Great video 👍 I will try it out for sure 🤗
If you take five tops do you do a wash when you’re there if away for ten days? Four bottoms sounds enough for ten days without washing but five tops isn’t!
I wash them by hand if there’s no option to launder it halfway otherwise 😊🙏🏻
Seriously. Too much laundry. Don’t want to do it every 4 days. Can’t wear tops twice.
5 tops can last me 25 days - I can wear the same top for at least 5 days- longer in the winter. I shower myself and clean underwear every day, not my clothes 😊. Now I’m worried- should I be washing my clothes after wearing them only once? 😅
So helpful! Thank you very much!
I need anyone’s suggestions on traveling with a chronic illness and pain (need class and comfort), and also I have chronic illnesses and pain, so I need to bring meds and tinctures for Lyme. I don’t know how to pack the tinctures, or what to put them in. Thanks!
Shoes are my biggest challenge.
Could you please tell us where you found the jewelry roll? It appears to be exactly what I’d want. Thank you.
I found it on Etsy some years back, here’s a similar one 🥰

Thank you so much! I hadn’t thought of Etsy-terrific. Thank you again.
Love this !! ❤❤
I think I would have to do 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 shoes, 2 jackets and one set of workout gear
Could you please share info about the jewellery pouch, it’s beautiful 😊
It’s some years old and found it from a private seller on Etsy 🥰 here is a similar one: www.etsy.com/dk-en/listing/1489714105/leather-jewelry-roll-personalized
Great to know
Is the 54321 method including the clothes you wear ?
"Minimalist"
Brings her entire wardrobe 😂
A rain jacket too?
Yes probably 😅🙏🏻
I would like to have seen one wear all the different outfits
Kocham ♥️
`same here only cosmetics and vitamins are always a worry…
Thanks.... 👍🏻😃
This is a lot for 10 days .
Dont you live in Copenhagen?
Lol white and I don't get along
❤❤❤
❤
I took a lot less clothes on a 35 day trip.
❤❤❤
Omg- pack NOTHING! 😅
Buy all the cool clothes at your destination( if time allows) we traveled 3 week around Europe this summer with just backpacks and regretted it - could have bought high quality wardrobe for very reasonable price. Also every country has it’s own “fashion” so it’s kinds cool to fit in with locally purchased clothing
got a virus from a download. not cool
I am mystified as to how on earth you manage to get all that into a carry on. And you didn't even mention toiletries.
Way, way too much. I cut out at “two bathing suits.”
looks more maximalist than minimalist to me....
This doesn’t take into account what she will will wear on the plane.
