One of the many things i love so much about this channel are the comments. I've never found any other channel here on youtube, where people actually try to start a real conversation, instead of just trying to be cute or throwing shit in the fan... Very nice and very appreciated by me ^^
Olay didn't just change their advertising, they changed the product so they could compete with high end products. Olay got great reviews and produced a high end product that was sold relatively inexpensively. With ProX it's not the same old product put in a new package because the formula is different. To buy additives to ProX is very expensive so that is why ProX is expensive. ProX is about half the price of similar products. When women buy skin care they look for specific additives.
You know it's much more than just these 2 simple truths. With the second truth, marketers think of how to squeeze out every bit of utility through the cheapest costs of labor and material while giving the consumer the impression that it's a good product.
The BigThink here is "Anybody can do or, if you want to be the best company in your industry, you gotta do and. If you go that, everything is doable." Those who do not see why this video was posted are not thinking big.
I think more people should be made aware of just how things are marketed to them. I believe that is the value of this video. People should remember that companies are essentially trying to manufacture an emotional relationship to their products.
The academic endeavour stretches far and wide, just because you don't agree with its conclusions doesn't make this a bad video. Whether or not you agree with the methods or not is irrelevant. One thing that's great is that at least now you know it's happening. What you do with that knowledge is up to you.
@InvincibleIronyMan It's a slogan about selling products, not about how to devise your time. It is used as an example of how you can better your life by changing the way you think about something. I think you misunderstood it.
@xbuster17: Thank you so much for posting that. I was only moments away from saying almost the exact same thing. Based on the title I was pretty excited to watch this one but was immediately let down. Seeing your comment(rightfully the most "liked") gives me hope for the future. Thanks.
That's how you sell nowadays, you sell an experience NOT a product. People should've noticed by now they're buying a cream in order to be socially accepted by the people atound them, not buying a cream to plainly cover their pores because they feel like it. Because of this way of thinking companies like P&G create ads that take advantage of the natural fear of being socially rejected, and they've proved to be useful!
@shiftplusone80 and @timinator1337 - This video gives great inside perspective to the brutal truth behind corporate marketing tactics. If more people were aware of this manipulation (the point of the video), they/you would be a lot less likely to fall for it. No matter the level of insecurity. Second, A company can justify selling it's products for whatever price they want, this video INSPIRES me to not buy them. The purpose of big think is to give perspective, not tell you how to live or act.
@jubulalau It was an example. He means that people, in order to gain success or whatnot, must focus on two truths, not just one. In marketing, that is just advertising the product's looks AND it's effects.
@shiftplusone80 I find it an extreme example because rape, murder, and slavery are evils inflicted on others while insecurity is a self-inflicted wound.
This just basically says that to be successful your product has to be enticing enough to buy but also enough to be bought again, which is nothing more than the most basic of common sense...
I wish people cared more about the second part rather than the first part. I think that the first M.O.T. makes companies lie to their customers(even if the M.O.T. has good means). In an ideal world a good product should not be exceeded by a bad one.
I generally hate marketers. Their basic philosophy is, "every successful product is because of marketing, so you should never spend any money on making your products and services better, instead you should give it all to us." Any normal-sized company that followed the advice of these horrible bloodsuckers would fail miserably, which is why marketers target gigantic corporations who have the power to avoid failure by changing the rules in their favor. Bill Hicks definitely had the right idea.
@rhinnawi95 not sure if troll. I meant cosmetic.. As in make-up yes, Anti-aging cream, anti wrinkle, etc etc.. those may not be "makeup" but it's still cosmetic. My point was that they can charge 50 bucks for a small bottle of "attempted youth"..thats how they make BILLIONS and invest it in nano-technology to one day have skin rebuild itself. vanity may just power science
People crying about our system but dont manage to do something against it. So the point is? Keep crying? Or maybe understand what he is saying and make your own conclusions and adaptions to this? For me the answer is obvious and would find this pretty interesting, if I wouldnt be interested in psychological stuff (which includes marketing either) for quite a while.
@vabyss78 I guess you missed it. They have jumped from a mediocre million dollar company to a billion dollar company because they are appealing to the emotion of the consumer.
what's going on here?? who is flagging comments as spam? when i read the flagged comments they are not spam someone is trying to control minds? don't like opposing views or just being a jerk?
@xbuster17 that is still applicable to what he said if the people are smart and they know what companies are bad then they will not buy the crap and companies will realize that people dont like us we must do stuff they like. if people like smart decisions they will make smart decisions. this of course not taking into account if the companies attempt to control what people think, how ever a good government should prevent that, good being independent of the companies money and smart.
@xbuster17 consumerism is how we got to 1990 where all of the developed counties had balanced budgets etc that were sustainable admittedly the oil was still going to run out but the main courses was that we had seen these things work so well that we got careless also I will admit there was to much focus on services. but consumerism is important to create jobs in other words cash flow the faster cash flows the better the economy that's why dictor ships economies are not great because they^^^
Everything is doable except anything that actually matters. You study the way people take money from emotionally deficient shoppers. That's going to make a great epitaph.
@xRA1D32x It's not a 'How To' for tricking people. It's talking about the subtleties of language and social understanding. Their dipping into the social sciences instead of just the sciences here. Stop fussing.
@garudagal23 I wouldn't be suprised if this corporate guy hired somebody to flag "undesirable" posts. Another tactic in controlling the minds of his consumers. They really do think we're all sheep. Notice how his talk had nothing substantive in it ? And practically the whole video was about selling his product instead of the "power of changing your thinking" (title of the video).
@xRA1D32x just an example, relax. the company got what they want by changing their approach/thought process. in this example social science was used as a tool to make a lot of profit, which is the aim of any business.
Another misleading title. I am quite disappointed at this blatant display of what is wrong with capitalism and trying to pass it off as a brilliant victory of the mind's prowess...
223 fell for the first moment of truth and failed to experience the second. and its not even bigthink's fault. too closed minded these people are, for big thoughts
@bcblkshrt27 It's not simply misleading; it's just too generic. Any of these bigthink videos can change the way you think, but this video is talking specifically about "two truths" etc.
I wtfed at this video. So, basically, it's about how you need to change your way of thinking so you can rip people off? So you can get more money out of their pockets?
@timinator1337 Do you ever wonder if maybe the videos that inspired you repeat things you had thought already? and if so...how is this video not highlighting that?
@xbuster17 funnel all the money to the top which a billionaire are not going to spend there personal wealth because they basically can't so the cash flow goes down so the economy is shit. the exception to this rule is china because they realized that if they spread the wealth promote consumerism and reward people but also reward people for success that promotes cash flow which races the economy forward. The thing they are missing however is promoting artistic talent which promotes design.
@NunSuperior Capitalism in a nutshell.Business is about competition and choice .The winner is the consumer. Socialism in a nutshell.Government decides the winner, there is little choice. The consumer is the loser. Socialism is force and not choice, this is clear ! .
@xRA1D32x I too am disgusted by the actions of these companies; HOWEVER, if you learn how others may try to trick both you and your loved ones you will be better prepared to perceive the action for what it is. Keep an open mind and learn from everything, even the foolish and wicked.
i never buy products that want to sell me happiness you as firm can't possibly be so arrogant to think you know what makes me happy, you don't know who I am, its insulting & derogatory. i want a product for its specific functions or purposes. your marketing-department has to explain me as accurate as possible what your product does, without irritating me to much in the process. If you fail to include enough relevant information, i will get frustrated and will associate your brand with risque.
Wow, Big Think used to have some really great speakers with mind opening ideas or even other ideas one's never heard of. Seems to be now a watered down TED overtaken by corporate $. Too bad....
@xRA1D32x There is a hidden message here, people need to stop falling for the first moment of truth because it is stupid mindless bollocks put there by advertising agencies.
Or, I don't buy the Oil of Olay because it's full of chemicals and crap that isn't going anywhere near my skin. Oh and I LOATHE the word consumer. Got through one minute. No thanks. On to the next video.
Actually there is usually very little true, peer reviewed research to back up the ridiculous claims of these products. Use your brains! Make decisions for yourselves about how you will spend your hard earnt cash! DON'T BE SHEEP! Why should some overpaid male executive tell you what you should look like, how you should feel?
@kindAhumaNbeinG since this channel is too "boring" for trolls, i guess, i find it interesting, but u know the general =3 public wont remain interested by this
stop posting bullshit like this. I liked the Big Think for mind opening and interesting thinkers. Not insight into how facial creme companies trick consumers into buying shit they don't need. I could care less about manipulating people for the sake of profit and i think it's disgusting.
One of the many things i love so much about this channel are the comments. I've never found any other channel here on youtube, where people actually try to start a real conversation, instead of just trying to be cute or throwing shit in the fan... Very nice and very appreciated by me ^^

No matter how much you may hate commercialism and/or consumerism, it's still interesting, and perhaps useful, to see how these people think.
The BigThink here is "Anybody can do or, if you want to be the best company in your industry, you gotta do and. If you go that, everything is doable." Those who do not see why this video was posted are not thinking big.

I normally hate the whole "big company" thing but I kinda liked this video
@xbuster17: Thank you so much for posting that. I was only moments away from saying almost the exact same thing. Based on the title I was pretty excited to watch this one but was immediately let down. Seeing your comment(rightfully the most "liked") gives me hope for the future. Thanks.

@Rumstern basicly, from what i understand from this guy, is that the compagnies have the power of changing the way the customer think.
I always wondered how we all get manipulated into buying stuff we don't really need, now I know.
@shiftplusone80 and @timinator1337 - This video gives great inside perspective to the brutal truth behind corporate marketing tactics. Welcome to the world of Marketing people!
Very insightful, Thank You.

why do people dislike this? This is standard capitalism
@InvincibleIronyMan It works if you're talking about two *desired* goals.

Very interesting take on effective advertising.
wow, there's so many resentful cynics in the comments. making money and business is a part of life. get over it.
@shiftplusone80 It's not like other products are not exploiting the human condition.
Capitalism in a nutshell. Business is about winning. Winning what is unclear.
Possibly the most offensive thing is being told by male advertising executives what I want!
This is why I never buy superfluous products like Olay.
Now the cosmetic industry is worth BILLIONS, ans spending more money on nanotechnology than any other industry combined.
@xbuster17 that is still applicable to what he said if the people are smart and they know what companies are bad then they will not buy the crap and companies will realize that people dont like us we must do stuff they like. if people like smart decisions they will make smart decisions. this of course not taking into account if the companies attempt to control what people think, how ever a good government should prevent that, good being independent of the companies money and smart.
i was expecting a better video on this channel!
So? Is the $3.99 product the same with now $50 product in essence?
@xRA1D32x who said its manipulating. he never said a damn thing about manipulation only that smart businesses do what the customer whants
@kindAhumaNbeinG That's because thinking people are attracted to what they can comprehend.
@jubulalau Yes. That's it.
@xbuster17 consumerism is how we got to 1990 where all of the developed counties had balanced budgets etc that were sustainable admittedly the oil was still going to run out but the main courses was that we had seen these things work so well that we got careless also I will admit there was to much focus on services. but consumerism is important to create jobs in other words cash flow the faster cash flows the better the economy that's why dictor ships economies are not great because they^^^
I Like this one!!!
Stop fussing.
moral of the story, there is always a dumbass out there that will buy a $50 terd in a box.
@garudagal23 I wouldn't be suprised if this corporate guy hired somebody to flag "undesirable" posts. Another tactic in controlling the minds of his consumers. They really do think we're all sheep. This did NOTHING for me. The word "consume" makes my skin crawl and will not get us as a people or our planet anywhere good.
although this was interesting, doesn't the 'do "and" rather than "or"' go without saying?
Another misleading title. I am quite disappointed at this blatant display of what is wrong with capitalism and trying to pass it off as a brilliant victory of the mind's prowess...
@xRA1D32x agreed
how to trick ppl into thinking that you are good looking. just sell them a 3$ cream 50$ and run add telling them that they are sexy
@InvincibleIronyMan your over analyzing it too much. it makes perfect sense if you just consider the context he is talking about
lolz. that was awesome. a guide on how to use woman's insecurities to make a profit.
@kindAhumaNbeinG I don't see a lot of people giving thumbs-down to opposing viewpoints here, that could be a possible reason.
223 fell for the first moment of truth and failed to experience the second. and its not even bigthink's fault. too closed minded these people are, for big thoughts

@timinator1337 Do you ever wonder if maybe the videos that inspired you repeat things you had thought already? and if so...how is this video not highlighting that?
That's an interesting philosophy.

@kindAhumaNbeinG since this channel is too "boring" for trolls, i guess, i find it interesting, but u know the general =3 public wont remain interested by this
@rhinnawi95 I liked what you were talking about better too lol
hi
@BeardedBill86 To paraphrase Winston Churchill, capitalism is a terrible system, and the only worse system is anything else.
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah!
