I've watched every video there is on this technique, tried it on dozens of minis, and I just still cannot get the hang of it to a passable level. I'm convinced that anyone that can do it actually is magic
Howdy. Danny Ono gave me the heads up and I just saw this. Thank you for your shout out. I am flattered you found my work useful. I was afraid it would be as a bad example. I consider myself more technician than artist. You are an inspiration. Keep up the great work! Thank you, again.
great video Lyla. i really learnt a lot of things i needed to learn as a venture into nmm. just a tip for anyone a picture taken of amour with a basecoat of matt black eg. chaos black from citadel, with light shinning on it will produce a good reference for light and shadow. thanks again:)
Been genuinely anxious about trying NMM because I don’t think I’m that great a painter yet, but this video makes me feel a little less like it’s completely out of my skill range. I know it’s always about practice but it’s nice to be able to watch videos that break through that initial anxiety. Thanks for the awesome resource!
Thanks Lyla, it’s been fun watching your channel grow - yours is a needed perspective, and I love how you are coming at this from more of a fine arts background. 🤗
Your NMM class was very informative and the hint of going to the museum site was a stroke of genius I never thought of. Thanks much. Oh yeah, I already have and use the hobby holder and brush racks, let someone else have them.
Just found your channel. Your explanations and teaching style make complicated techniques more understandable. Thank you. I'm a beginner mini painter, but am enthused to try new things
I agree. I've heard this called true metallic metal or 'TMM' as a sort of playful reference to 'NMM'. I like to do a nice black-gray-white gradient, then put a thin glaze of metallic over the top.
Good video Lyla! Perhaps this will push me over to finally dare to paint NMM...hmm... I better watch the video a couple of more times before getting my paints on! 😆
Thank you soooooo much for turning me onto the Met's website, Lyla! (very mild sarcasm...lol!) It's been a long, long time since I visited there, and am now stuck obsessing over their art (and armor) photos! 🖒😎
One of the most intuitive NMM tutorials ever. Only one caveat: you should have explained that glazing on the upper part of the greaves to create the reflection of the purple silk. ;) Thanks Lyla. PS: Loving how you grab your brush :D
@@LylaMev @Lyla Mev - The Mini Witch at least It looks unusual to me, but maybe I am The one holding It weirdly haha Anyway, awesome tutorial. subscribing to the channel is mandatory! Greetings from Spain. Keep Up the good work!!
Thank you for this! I appreciate your teaching style, it's really cool that you take the time to explain the method to your madness. Great tips, great tutorial. Awesome!
Thanks for making this video! NMM has always seemed like an unattainable style, but know I feel like I might -actually- be able to make it work! Thank you!
I like to use a blend between NMM and TMM. I use metallic paints, but tint them into the gradients like NMM to regain some control over the placement of shadows and highlights. Inks are great for this and for adding colored reflections because of their high pigment density and lower opacity, effectively coloring your metallics without cutting the reflectivity as much as tinting with paints.

Another helpful video. Even found a site to order from. Definitely going to order some of the desk wizards because well citadel pots suck and right now I blue tack the pots to my table.
Have not done much NMM. I usually stick to TMM as I often think that NMM can look a bit weird on the tabletop from certain angles, but I do like NMM in photos. I do think the principles behind NMM actually helps me do better TMM
This tutorial does assume that one has a preferred technique for painting! I asked people what made nmm seem difficult, and the majority of people said they were unsure where to place the highlights, so that’s what I addressed!
@@LylaMev Definitely a great thing to address, and addressed well! I think a lot of mini painters (myself included) sometimes forget to use real life for inspiration and reference rather than solely other mini painters.
Small point of fact - Neither of those paintings are on canvas. The Mona Lisa is painted on a poplar panel and the Prado copy is painted on walnut panel.
What type and size of brush were you using for your lining? I can't get that kind of performance (fine lines) from anything in my brush stable. (But it could just be me. :) )

However, the pictures you use as reference were of armor taken in a studio, not outside. Those big white areas are the reflections of the photographer's big softbox; not really mideval fantasy realism...otherwise a good vid though.

This is the most direct presentation on NMM I've seen. I feel more confident about giving it a try!

Very cool, glad you're getting a chance to do something fun for your subscribers!
I've found that even if you don't do NMM and stick with metallics, understanding the idea will help those.

bookmarking this and coming back when I try to tackle nmm. your ideas and guidance are solid and helpful!

Yeah you paint that NMM good!
Not to diminish from the tutorial, but I'm smitten by the minis purple pants. Lovely thing.
Worthwhile tutorial too. Rock on Lyla :)

That much closer to taking the plunge into NMM due to this video, and thank you for sharing your knowledge on the matter with us!
(As always) This is such a helpful video! Thanks so much for all the work you out in to this community!
It's really cool seeing your videos continue to improve! And the giveaway idea is pretty awesome :)

Perfect timing! I was gearing up to do some NMM on a figure and needed a quick refresh. :D
Love the idea of using pictures from the Met! Keep up the great work!
Love the look of how this mini came out! Can’t wait to try this out! Thanks for the great videos.

Very nice video! I have yet to try NMM this will be very helpful when I take that plunge. The MET arms and armour collection is so amazing 😻

Great vid Lyla--excellent NMM reference material used and an awesome final result :D
I always get something useful out of your videos. Thank you for making such great content.
Great video, always nice to see different approaches for NMM
This is a great tutorial Lyla, so much information to process but really well laid out. ...and CATS!
Mochi LOVES to help me film.
Great tutorial. And I actually made it to the Met in December and took a lot of photos of armor and weapons just for reference.
1st time viewer and this is very helpful as painting some paladins and this is helpful thank you so much ^-^ and good luck everyone
Thank you for the information, it all goes in the head to help me get better at NMM.
Love the simplified breakdown, it's really helped bring the theory all together for me.
Great video. Always easy to follow along. Thanks for making these tutorials!!
Good video! Still hesitant to jump into NMM. Gotta make the leap on my next solo model after I finish the squad I'm working on now.
Thank you so much for this video! It's super helpful, NMM always stresses me out.
Great textures, love the shading
Cool presentation, like the use of armor references for lighting.
This is great advice! Thanks so much for your content :)
Ooh, even though I came here from your Instagram, kinda glad because new things to learn 🎃
Thank you very much for all the videos.
I'll definitely be checking out the Met museum's photos. Thanks for the tip and the succinct overview of the process.
A nice and quick way to get a simple and effective NMM ^_^.
Great video and explanations, thank you!
This was extremely helpful. I'm still very skittish about nmm. Thank you for taking the time to help us out!
Ooh. Hobby holder. (Great nmm and tutorial, btw - will check out other videos next time I'm painting)
Thanks for that! As always, your Tutorials help me to learn and getting better at painting :)
Great channel, thanks for all the tips.
Looking forward trying this with my minis.
After this month I have to try NMM. Not had any miniatures with metal really, but i have some coming in.
This was really helpful, thank you!
Great tips! thanks. I have a buttload of knight miniatures (my favorite besides Elves). Great job on your mini.
Even if I don't win, I hope to look for Game Envy at Adepticon this year. :) It's always sweet to check out small businesses in person. :)
Using The Met as a reference is fantastic! Thanks for the tips 😁
No matter how many of these videos I watch, NMM is still intimidating.
Approach it one piece of armor at a time instead of looking at the whole suit!
Nice video! This is very helpful!
Beautifully painted. I need to practice more NMM so these are some great tips!
NMM was always so intimidating until I saw this. Might give it a shot now
Thanks for the information of nmm.

NMM isn't my jam but this is the guide I'd use if I ever tried it.
Love love love this video! Thank you so mich!
Haven't done anything in a while with enough metal to try NMM. One figure on my table has a large sword, so maybe it's time to give it a shot.
Fantastic vid! Thanks so much :)
This was really helpful!
Thanks for the great tutorial!
This is really nice! A lot of good ideas here. I will be posting it to the Facebook group/page - Miniature Painting Alliance
Missed the drawing but subscribing because this was an awesome tutorial!
Nice NMM. It'd be interesting to see you glaze different colours on top to simulate different colours of metals.
Thanks for the tutorial, I will try it on my next Farseer's staff :-)
Great video!
Deffo going to give NMM a go after watching this!
i use lots of reference materials and use a large light source to see how the light naturally falls on the model
This was useful & interesting
Step 1: look at metal. Step 2: paint metal. :) But really, this video was very helpful, and I wish it were available a week or so ago!

Thank you for some great videos and this giveaway!
So many great videos on NMM lately... still so hard to get by brain around the highlights.
I came by to check out this video to learn NMM. I find it hilarious that your cats jump into your videos....as though they are doing it on purpose....
What table are you using thank you
What are you working on today!?
What type and size of brush were you using for your lining? I can't get that kind of performance (fine lines) from anything in my brush stable. (But it could just be me. :) )
Try a thin short bristle brush with a bit of flow improver.
Windsor newton 0!
Love how it looks hate how much time it can take...still try and do it tho :)
This is something I want to practice more. I think when I tried it I made the transitions too gradual. It looked cool but not like metal.
I’ve run into that, too!
Not much luck with NMM but this video may do the trick!
Love those cats :3
But what does the cat think of NMM?
I feel like this is a good way to learn about using references but there isn't enough painting in it.

That gets into Earth sky nmm which is an entire other can of worms. Definitely not Beginner friendly.
I'm pretty sure when I attempt NMM my miniature will just explode.
