TheWalkthroughKiller It's not a high end phone but I think it runs pretty smooth. Much better than Tracfone's previous Android offerings. It does not crash a lot. Dunno about games since I don't play them but I would think it could handle basic games very well, but not 3D intensive games and not very CPU or GPU demanding games.
just upgraded from the dynamic II to the ultimate 2. The dynamic II was good...just the resolution was horrible and the internal storage was relatively small. The ultimate 2 is about like an iphone 5.
yeah thanks for taking the time to do this. But the 41 only has the 1.2 "duel" core not the "quad" core. So maybe that might make a bit of differance in the 20 bucks too. I'd like to see the Volt on TF too. I'm glad to see TF is starting to get with it. It will be interesting to see if TF allows the phones to be up dated to the new Android OS, like the moto's.
thanks for the compare. I chose the LG tracfone pkg... I'm sick-n-tired of all of the high rates, hidden (& magically increasing fees + taxes) ...if the device lasts, I'll consider using tracfone's monthly payment plan.
forgot an important point, I use either the Samsung Gear Circle -or- my LG Tone Pro bluetooth earphones. they make a world of difference when either listening to music or taking/making calls.
I've had both for a year. The LG is rootable, supports moving apps to sd card, has 2x as many quick toggles and are customizable (Pop Icon doesn't even have a BT toggle) and supports 2x tap to wake. Both have the Adreno 305 for GPU, 8GB ROM, and equal on cell signal. Either can go several days between charging with light usage. BYOD is definitley the way to go now but between these two the LG wins hands down IMO.
+jgfjgfify I had an old Samsung T401G feature phone years ago, that Net10 (subsidiary of Tracfone) had rated the external storage at 16 GB; but according to the phone manufacturer, it could handle 32 GB. I don't know why Net10/Tracfone/Straight Talk(?) insists on dumbing down the storage capacity on their phones' microSD cards; but I followed the manufacturer and went for the 32 GB card. Worked ok for a while, but then it maxed out and refused to access the remainder of the storage space. :( I'm a little leary of trying it now.
Alcatel pop icon seems to be the only quad core tracfone. Mine was refurbished for 70 something dollars. I thought it might have been a used fierce with an larger screen and battery installed.
The name means nothing. They are both the same megahertz. But perhaps with the lower resolution graphics of the LG things may seem to run faster. But if the software supports quad core the Alcatel should blow away the LG.
thanks theres not much dif in size so i prob go big with the pop cause of the sound being so much better..just need to see if i can find a decent way to carry it on my belt or something also if you use wifi no data time is deducted right?
Thanks for the comparison....I went with the Ultimate 2 because I want something that will fit in my pocket comfortably and the size of the Pop Icon, while nice for watching videos, doesn't seem very practical. The only thing that gave me pause was the speakerphone.....I've had flip phones that have had better speakerphones than the Ultimate 2 but it's not too bad.
Don't let this video fool you the LG Ultimate 2 screen look a hell of alot nicer than this video is showing. That screen cover makes it look bad. Also raising the brightness to 80%-100% makes it looks really good.
As a long-term supporter of LG products, I found myself in a dilemma when the Alcatel and LG Ultimate 2 dropped for Tracfone. I bought the LG. End result: Very Happy ! The phone handled everything I threw at it from apps to music to videos. BUT. The saying that "bigger is better" is sometimes a VERY truism and with the Alcatel it is TOTALLY the case......I now own one. Believe me when I say that you get THE ultimate (no pun intended) bang for the buck with the Alcatel. More detailed options. MUCH bigger screen i.e. 0.5 inches makes a big difference. Save your money using a Tracfone and make the better choice and buy the Alcatel A564C.
Thanks for the review. The tracfone website says that the LG Ultimate 2 has a dual core 1.2Ghz processor as does LG's own website, not a quad-core. That being said, most review sites for tracfone say that the LG is currently tracfone's best android phone. JW3HH
If you want bigger get the Alcatel Pop Icon but if you want better quality then get the LG Ultimate 2 is the way to go. Acatel Pop Icon one has jittery video playback and a cheaper front facing camera and plastic covered screen. The LG Ultimate 2 unit has Gorilla Glass on the screen and it will most likely out last the Alcatel Pop Icon unit. I have the LG Ultimate 2 and not sorry at all for getting it over the Alcatel Pop Icon unit. If you have them side by side and run apps they both perform good and the LG Ultimate 2 even dual core is faster on most. Video on LG Ultimate 2 is perfect. Do not let quad core sway you over the dual core as it does not do anything better that you can notice at all.
+Inky Doggy "Do not let quad core sway you over the dual core as it does not do anything better that you can notice at all." Are you sure? I am undecided on this, as I currently have a ZTE Valet with a single-core 1 GHz processor (I think it is); and the resources are such that it won't even get out of its own way. Google Chrome (and the rest of the preinstalled non-removable bloatware) absolutely ruined that phone, in my view. You open the web browser (I use Firefox); and it lags so badly that the onscreen keyboard takes several taps before it finally comes to the screen (if at all). The keyboard then disappears while you're in mid-typing; then when you finally get the address/search entered and hit 'send,' it often force-closes before you get to where you're going. The browser isn't even the latest version; because about a year ago the updates (for both Firefox and Chrome) started coming back with "Insufficient space" errors. The camera always took terrible quality pics; especially now that the lens is broken. Basically I just use it for voice calls and some texting; but this phone is unarguably way overdue for an upgrade. Thing is, with this pitifully poor performance, I thought it best to go for the largest incremental improvement (in specs) that I could afford. The Ultimate 2 (if I understand correctly) only has twice the processor speed and memory of the Valet; and Tracfone charges more for the same phones than (say) Verizon prepaid, because they're making less money off the service backend. My husband's LG Transpyre is fairly zippy; but that's quad core running on Verizon prepay service. I'd hate to spend the money and settle for dual core; only to find that it, too, is barely keeping up.
the specs I see is that it is a dual-core, not quad-core...? Android 4.4 KitKat operating system 1.2GHz dual-core processor 4.5" diagonal WVGA IPS touchscreen display with 800x480 resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass also on TracFone site it say the Alcatel is also dual-core...?

You can transfer your minutes, they'll be put into 3 buckets, talk/text/data the same amount. If you have 1000 minutes on your 840, you'll get 1000 talk/1000 text/1000 data. Thank you Is this Tracfone's latest and greatest Not a lot of reviews out there. I have a 840 that I am happy with. Thinking of going with android. Want to stay with Tracfone.
An Android on tracfone is a great upgrade from a regular phone, though the catch is that once you transfer your number over to a android, you cannot transfer your number back to your 840. you can only transfer it to another android, But you can get the phones and not activate them to see if you like them before you make the decision (you can't call anyone but 911. But at least it will give you an idea if you like it or not) i have the 840 as well before i went with an android and i have to say its a great phone too, though it can no longer fulfill my needs anymore (since my needs out grows it capabilities), but still a great phone to have before upgrading to a smartphone
I have the Alcatel pop icon & I like it but, the speaker for hearing people talk during phone calls isn't very good. Sometimes I can't here people at all. The battery life isn't the greatest either.
Ben Koopmann if you use Hangouts (the default messaging app in 4.4 KitKat), no. As long as it's not a picture or video, where the data must be on. I use a different app, and it has a setting where my phone can auto retrieve MMS texts or not.
What is it with the poor resolution on Tracfone screens? 540x960 and 480x800? I was hoping to switch over to Tracfone from my AT&T HTC One 1080x1920. Why oh why won't they let us BYOP GSM phones? Or has that changed?
I am really confused if you get he lg ultimate 2 can you use all of the features even if you have AT&T I will also be under wifi a lot so can you still download apps under wifi with AT&T
My fear of going android on tracfone is the real cost. Android and its apps like doing things in the background burning through minutes. My java based Samsung not only triples minutes but every thing is the same, units. The only thing that interest me in these phones is the flash, how well does it work? You should do video on that but no ones does.
+bruce p - I think there's basically the same problem on standard smartphone prepaid plans with Verizon, Straight Talk, etc. that run $45 - $60/month. You get between 1 and 5 GB mobile data for that price; but seriously, why isn't anyone talking about just how little data that actually is in today's real-world computing??? :\ You can burn through it quite quickly if a lot of mobile apps are updating (as you say) "in the background," and a lot of those garbage apps from the Google Play Store require rather extensive permissions access (and now Google's "group permissions" policy that's really sneaky). I think the trick is to set the phone (and/or apps) to where they can only operate when wi-fi connection is available. But exactly how that works (what settings you need to change, etc.) I'm not sure. I think it varies somewhat depending on the phone's operating system. Are you referring to how well the flash (if any) works with the camera? I didn't consider that a big deal. The flash on mine has a somewhat greenish cast, so even though it works "always on" with the video (a real battery-drainer, there), both the quality and quantity leaves much to be desired.
+reubj - What do you mean by "roam"? I live in an area where Verizon is the only carrier that has consistent, dependable coverage at my home, inside buildings, etc. (very limiting, price and feature-wise, I admit, as all my MVNO phones have to work on Verizon's backbone); but no other real options). I do not travel a lot (if by "travel" is meant more than a 50 mi. radius from "home base"); but I haven't noticed any trouble getting a signal on my ZTE Valet. If you mean that Tracfone smartphones will not work if one is out-of-state, or out of the area code the phone is registered to, then yeah, that is definitely *not* a plus-point. :( If you mean that e.g. a Tracfone smartphone handset coded to work off of Verizon towers will not "roam" onto Sprint or AT&T towers (in the absence of Verizon towers), then that is not a problem for me. Verizon is virtually everywhere now; and considering that Tracfone's minutes typically cost a minimum of 8 to 10 cents each (ridiculously overpriced, compared to unlimited service), the cost for _roaming_ minutes would *really* be prohibitive. My guess is that they don't have any way to account for it in their business service model. Either way, when it comes to roaming, I kind of like the fact that the phones won't roam. It means I don't have to worry about any nasty surprises where I run out of minutes due to my prepaid phone roaming unbeknownst to me (and deducting 30¢/min. or whatever from my account balance) on my last call.
Tracfone can't sell a 4G network phone since they have a contract with Verizon for cell tower service and Verizon choose to keep the 4G to themselves, which makes business sense.
I have a question, and please be kind. I have the Ultimate 2 and it used to have an icon that would list all the aps on the phone. I cannot find it. I had the Pop Icon for a while and that phone also had a similar list. Can anyone tell me how to get it back? Is there an app from the PlayStore that would do it? Thanks
why don't you get a ZTE whirl 2 on net10 with unlimited service for 35$ and put the SIM in this phone so you don't have to pay the ridiculous high prices.
quad core with 5" vs something with a popular brand name and almost identical specs except weaker cpu&gpu and smaller screen and higher price? Geeee let me think...
+googlemaster190 -Minecraft they go for 65-120 on ebay. FYI tracfone has unlocked phone support now so use any factory unlocked phone. Sony xperia z unlocked goes for about the same.
Does Alcatel have more than one Pop Icon? After searching I am getting two different model numbers, 7040T and A564C. If so it would be nice if you put the model numbers of what you're reviewing, in the information section up top. If there is only one Alcatel Pop Icon then I apologize and will shut up. hehe.
Why don't you talk about internal storage, I have a alcatel and not a lot of internal storage space, can't move apps to SD card, does the LG Ultimate have better storage , or an apps be transferred to SD card? The Alcatel you can not transfer apps to SD card, which sucks .
This was extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time and posting this.
omg thank you!! im trying to figure out which one of these to get for my father for xmas.. this video helped a lot.
Thanks Blake. I was a bit confused.
I am very happy with the Ultimate 2... much better than the Dynamic 2.
Very very true mee tooo
I want the pop icon smartphone
Does the Ultimate 2 run exceptionally smooth in basic use? Does it crash a lot on apps? (Low RAM?) And does it run good with games?
TheWalkthroughKiller It's not a high end phone but I think it runs pretty smooth. Much better than Tracfone's previous Android offerings. It does not crash a lot. Dunno about games since I don't play them but I would think it could handle basic games very well, but not 3D intensive games and not very CPU or GPU demanding games.

They're both $20 cheaper now (June 7, 2015) on Amazon.
Watching this on my lg ultimate 2 :)
Ok does the ultimate 2 run games like subway surfers good or not
GaminWorld101 its runs the games very smoothly

The one touch has now maid it to straight talk too I was happy to see that
HSN has the Alcatel pop $149 and QVC has the LG Ultimate 2 $129.
Thank you for your wonderful presentation and recommendation.

+JustWasted3HoursHere - And how about now?
YOU DID A GREAT JOB BRO! IS THE LG ANY BETTER THAN ALCATEL ON GPS MODE?? THANKS
What I really need to know is if there is a 6" cell phone that can be read in full sun-light??
There probably is, but you're going to pay a lot more for it than these phones being reviewed here.

the specs I see is that it is a dual-core, not quad-core...?
Android 4.4 KitKat operating system
1.2GHz dual-core processor
4.5" diagonal WVGA IPS touchscreen display with 800x480 resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass
also on TracFone site it say the Alcatel is also dual-core...?
The ultimate 2 is dual core, the alcatel is quad core. Tracfone site is quite often wrong with there information.
Here's the specs for the Pop Icon from Alcatel:
www.alcatelonetouch.com/ca-en/products/smartphones/one_touch_pop_c7.html#.VHoxdskhBvk
yeah like i said, their website is often wrong as it is in this case. I own both phones. the alcatel is quad and the ultimate 2 is dual core
ShootBlues is the alcatel really faster having the quad core - or do you even notice?
the reported video stutter on the alcatel scares me also?
Thanks~
No I dont really notice the diff. but I am not a gamer I really only use basic apps like news and email etc. The video does stutter and i would not get the alcatel if that is important to you. also the ultimate has better colors.
Can we get app drawer using a launcher
I think the LG is a dual core. At least that's what I see on most of the forums.
ULT2 has gorilla glass, not plastic like the pop has.
I just got the Alcatel a564c POP ICON. I like everything about it but the videos. RUclips, or from the SDcard.. doesnt matter, theres a slight pause/skip as the movie and/or clip plays. This is brand new out of box it performed this way. From the review looks like this isn't happening. Why mines doing it I have no idea.
i noticed the pause skip on videos when i had the pop icon and i said no thanks and sent it back.
Two corrections; First they both have DUAL CORE not Quad Core processors and second, the Ultimate 2 has 8GB of memory and the Icon POP has onlt 4GB.
Rick opdyke the lg is dual and the icon pop is quad. Its on the tracfon website if you would like to look yourself.
Rick opdyke He also ment 1 GB of RAM That is usally called memory and the space is What you thought about
Does it use minutes like my LG840g and can I transfer my minutes?
Yes.
You can transfer your minutes, they'll be put into 3 buckets, talk/text/data the same amount. If you have 1000 minutes on your 840, you'll get 1000 talk/1000 text/1000 data. But be aware, if you end up hating android, you can NOT transfer back. It's a one way trip. As long as your happy with android, you keep buying the same minutes card as a non-android phone.
Evilista
Thanks for the information and for the caution.
Someone probably mentioned this, but the LG has a dual-core processor. The Alcatel has a quad-core. With that said, could you let me know what difference it makes?
the phone could handle heavier programs if its quad core and its most likely less to lag out than a dual core processor.
quad core= faster
dual core = less fast
The LG has only a Duel Core Possessor while the One Touch has a Quad. FYI
Do either of these have a magnetometer/Magnetic compass that works offline?
Barack Clinton Yes, both of the phones do have them
does either of the phones have the 5.0 update
Thank you Is this Tracfone's latest and greatest
Not a lot of reviews out there. I have a 840 that I am happy with. Thinking of going with android. Want to stay with Tracfone.

Mr. Some Gamer Dude Thank You
Helpful review comparison.
Does the buttons vibrate on the icon like other androids?
the Alcatel screen doesn't look as bright as the U2...or is that just the an optical illusion?
Ultimate 2 is a dual core Qualcomm processor. Not a quad core
Can I use another [TracFone] card Sim in lg phone??
ultimate has more internal storage but only dual core.. Pop has quad and bigger display and at least or better specs except for front camera..
I have the Alcatel pop icon & I like it but, the speaker for hearing people talk during phone calls isn't very good. Sometimes I can't here people at all. The battery life isn't the greatest either.
How good does the phones work with group messages? I currently have a tracfone and it does not work with group messages.
Android 4.4 supports group messaging (4.3 also does, I believe, but I haven't had a 4.3 phone)
ewines16 Thanks!
Do you still have to retrieve the messages if they are in a group text?
Ben Koopmann
if you use Hangouts (the default messaging app in 4.4 KitKat), no. As long as it's not a picture or video, where the data must be on. I use a different app, and it has a setting where my phone can auto retrieve MMS texts or not.
ewines16 Thanks!!!
On the lg ultimate 2 can you play subway surfers and games like run smoothly
What is it with the poor resolution on Tracfone screens? 540x960 and 480x800? I was hoping to switch over to Tracfone from my AT&T HTC One 1080x1920. Why oh why won't they let us BYOP GSM phones? Or has that changed?
You can do byop with gsm now
TheWiffleBaller1212
Yep, you finally can. Took them quite a long time to actually start doing it though.
On the Alcatel can u make it so that the icons are not that big
Back then didn't get much for your money like now in 2024
any problems with wifi connection?
I am really confused if you get he lg ultimate 2 can you use all of the features even if you have AT&T I will also be under wifi a lot so can you still download apps under wifi with AT&T
the lg looks like has some futures as my virgin mobile usa LG volt ( one ) as there is a volt two .

The LG Ultimate 2 in not a quad core only dual...
Do the straight talk version of this video
they are the same phones inside and out, the only difference is one for straight talk and the other is tracfone, that it.
We don't need to see you measure the phone man!
Moto E vs Alcatel pop icon tracfone, please which is better? two different processors! I may cancel my purchase,TY!
Does the LG have a Dual-Core Processor or a Quad-Core Processor?
lg has dual, pop icon has quad.
> Alcatel one touch is better
can you wear this on your belt? thx
No but if you get a case that has a belt clip than yes
LG Ultimate 2 has a 1.2 GHz Dual Core Processor not quad
I have a question, and please be kind. I have the Ultimate 2 and it used to have an icon that would list all the aps on the phone. I cannot find it. I had the Pop Icon for a while and that phone also had a similar list. Can anyone tell me how to get it back? Is there an app from the PlayStore that would do it? Thanks
why don't you get a ZTE whirl 2 on net10 with unlimited service for 35$ and put the SIM in this phone so you don't have to pay the ridiculous high prices.
+Damien Hartley I presume you mean unlimited voice (not data)? When did Net10 start this?
The LG is dual-core, not quad.
why you say it cost $129.00 when the box says $19.95?
Because that the down payment for a months plan
+Blasted Breezy - Three months.
quad core with 5" vs something with a popular brand name and almost identical specs except weaker cpu&gpu and smaller screen and higher price? Geeee let me think...
lol ikr! Alcatel is obviously a better buy that the ultimate. just saving up to get it
+googlemaster190 -Minecraft they go for 65-120 on ebay.
If there is only one Alcatel Pop Icon then I apologize and will shut up. hehe.
Tim G yeah they have MANY different ones.
Pop Icon A846L and somethin'.. I don't know.
Why don't you talk about internal storage, I have a alcatel and not a lot of internal storage space, can't move apps to SD card, does the LG Ultimate have better storage , or an apps be transferred to SD card?
The Alcatel you can not transfer apps to SD card, which sucks .
