Great video, Ian. Think you down played a little how difficult this transit is for a solo sailor. Once you enter the canal, you're committed to a long stretch as there are very flew places for pleasure boat to tie alongside and anchoring is prohibited in main channel. The one place we tried, shown on canal map as an anchoring location had large signs saying no anchoring. Those floating lock pontoons also have no bollards or cleats to lasso so solo sailor needs to alight from his/her craft to secure lines. Not easy at all.
Thanks Ian 😁 and very true, it was a real challenge solo. It would be easier if the locks didn’t have pontoons at all, so you can use the posts set in the lock wall. Would also be easier if there were anchoring locations. As you say anchoring is prohibited, even in the lagoons dotted here and there.
Thank you very much! Very useful for anyone planning the same passage. Strange that the lock pontoons make no concessions whatsoever to yachtsmen and leisure craft. Thats the Hun for you, I suppose. Best wishes
Never thought I’d be interested in the Kiel Canal Ian but after this I am. Fabulous! ⛵️
Thank you Hugh, it was worth it to be able to cut across instead of going right the way round, thats for sure. A great experience.
Very nice video, thank you!!
Thanks 👍🏻

Thank you 👍🏻 not that surprising they make all their money from the ships passing through.
Thank you.
Interesting, thanks.
very instructive, thx!
would be good to know around what time of the year the images were taken
Thank you 👍🏻 this was the very end of august.
You are at Brunsbüttel in minute 11, not in Kiel. Kiel is at the other end. :-)
Schilksee, not -seel
