Hey there Colin, greetings from the creator of this distro! (Sorry I can't mention the name so YT won't delete my comment.) Really good to see you on your channel, I always enjoy watching you and hearing your perspective on the Linux Saloon. A few additional comments on the video: - 5:50 Thanks very much for highlighting and correctly explaining the developer-hit-by-a-bus issue, that was a major consideration in the creation of this distro. - 11:22 Interesting, you used the VirtualBox EFI option. ;-) That's a good thing to test. - 11:35 Support for VirtualBox automatic resolution resizing is actually pre-installed, it's just that VB always has a quirk where you have to resize the window when you start it maximized to make the guest react to the correct size. - 14:00 Correct, it's just Numix for the GTK theme. It's the theme with the best font color contrast that is available in the Debian repos. I didn't want to include a custom-coded GTK theme, once again going back to the developer-hit-by-a-bus issue, so it had to be a theme from the Debian repos. I would like to highlight the fact that it is normally extremely difficult to make Flatpak apps use the correct theme, especially Qt-based ones. So this distro also preconfigures all those arcane settings to properly theme Flatpaks as well. - 20:00 I personally don't trust Gnome Software to do system updates. The documentation shows the recommended GUI method of updating with Synaptic. - 21:57 Correct, I chose not to install the "libreoffice" metapackage because it brings a lot of unnecessary bloat. I just cherry-picked the specific components that are needed. - 22:30 Thanks a lot for showing the easy GUI method to install the Backports version. - 31:12 Thanks a lot for testing it with real hardware. I considered including libdvdcss1 out-of-the-box, but it brings along a ton of dependencies and it's not really something that most users need. But thanks a lot for sharing your tips, I'll see if some of those packages can be pre-installed and/or add specific instructions to the documentation. As it is now, it does include all the necessary codecs for digital media file playback, including for the Gstreamer framework. - 38:12 Sorry for the bait-and-switch with the "Additional Drivers" menu item. That appears to be the result of cross-pollination from Ubuntu, which has a specific drivers GUI for that menu item, but Debian doesn't, so it just opens the software sources window. Thanks again for the thorough and balanced review! Feel free to let me know if you have any other thoughts or suggestions. Greetings and best regards.
Thanks a lot for your comments much appreciated!! I would recommend regarding codecs for dvd playback having an extra item within the menu for DVD Playback Support that installs what is necessary, I don't believe dvd playback is used as much today, however I'm sure those in less fortunate countries may do, this way if it's needed it can be installed if not the extra bloat is avoided. Yeh the Additional drivers got me, I was excited for a bit Lol, I can honestly never figure out what Ubuntu does to get Nvidia working so easy. Regarding Virtualbox it depends which Graphics controller is used, I still use the VBoxVGA which most people don't today, however on most occasions it will full screen in the distro settings, maybe that's why the resolution was the incorrect size to start with. Thanks for the work you're doing with Spiral Linux, it's a great entry into the world of Debian!!
I haven't had a play with Spiral Linux, but installed Gecko Linux (openSuSE base) on a machine (instead of using openSuSE) & was most happy it remained on the machine for a long time; long enough that I had to upgrade openSuSE versions; I treated it just like my other openSuSE boxes & it happily upgraded. I was most pleased with Gecko Linux, and I'd expect the same from Spiral Linux (I do like Debian)
Another great video Colin. The Cinnamon version would be my pick too... Lol I've been running Eznix's "EznixOS" on my "The Rock computer" I did a video on and it has been a awesome experience as a Debian install. I have to figure out how to get to remember my name on the login manager it will be golden... I gave your CherryTree a look a while back and it was, lets say, more than I would ever use. I'm good with my pencil and paper, after I'm old and a boomer... HahAhAhAhAha Thanks Mate for the video! LLAP 🖖
Awesome mate!! can't go wrong with EznixOS! Hahahahaha "The Rock" Although I use Cherrytree I myself still use a lot of pen and paper, it then gets transferred to Cherrytree before I lose it Lol
Bruce...as root, open... /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf Look for the line below... [Seat:*] ...that says... greeter-hide-users=true Change it to... greeter-hide-users=false It will show the user after a reboot. You may have to choose yourself the first time that you get to lightdm after the reboot, but after you choose your login name, it should remember it thereafter. ;) 🖖
I have tried it but it’s far from ready The budgie desktop iso won’t even load The gnome version will load but it has many issues it really turnt me off I even tried de geko version it was even worse then debian version so I will not touch it
Hi there, creator of both distros here. Frankly, what you describe sounds like user error. But it could be a hardware issue as well. At any rate, if you want help to diagnose it or want to mention specifics I'm available over on the forum for this distro. (Can't mention the name or else YT deletes my comment.)

@@miyolinux Thanks man! That was the ticket... It's worked great.
Thanks for the help!

just upgraded from Buster about 2 weeks ago.
plain Openbox works fine for my taste, but this cinnamon build looks sleek for new users :)
Good to hear! Thanks for your comments!!
rheumatoid health? I can recommend tumeric. I take capsules against my psorasis arthtritis.
Great choice I take tumeric capsules as well!
don't get siduction, make Spiral Linux "unstable"
I'm still happy with Debian XFCE. No need to change it for something else.
Awesome!!

@@s.b.2088 it is the distributions off the developer I install Linux mint and I have no issues at all
G'day Menzo, sorry to hear that, I might try both of these distros and check whether or not I have similar issues, thanks for watching!
