Goodwin Race Muffler vs. Stock Exhaust - 2019 30AE ND Miata (MX-5)

- After installing Good-Win-Racing's Race Muffler on my ND, I had to capture some footage for before and after comparisons, and man what a difference a simple muffler makes! The car screams louder and with more authority, sounding like a proper sports car, even producing some nice burbles and pops between shifts and when I lift off the throttle. The engine also feels more responsive and peppier, adding to the charm of this car!
Fitment and quality are top-notch, especially for the price, when compared to other options for the ND chassis. I would highly recommend this muffler to anyone looking to improve the sound and performance of their ND! Get yours here: www.good-win-r...

Got an ND2 club less than one month ago. Threw on the Goodwin race exhaust today and what a difference! The Miata has come alive. Just adds to the thrill of driving this street legal go-cart, now with some real sound from her! Love it
Sounds incredible dude, even the stock exhaust sounded dope
Bought the same exhaust for mine and it transformed the character completely, for under $500 you cant beat it especially since its not obnoxious in the low range cruise
Couldn't agree more!
I just purchased the race. What did it change the most for you Joey?
@@samlee1890 Simply put before the exhaust it felt like a sporty zippy car afterwards it came to life, you hear every thing the engine is doing, its especially satisfying on downshifts and hard acceleration. Best part to me is it don't sound like a 4 banger fart can, you can tell the exhaust is really designed to make the car sound how its supposed to. I would never drive it with the stock exhaust again.
@@joeydepp779 I just installed it a week ago. Great exhaust. Driving is more fun with it. Do you use the baffle ?
@@samlee1890 Awesome, let it break in for awhile and will sound even more natural as the carbon builds up, I don’t use the baffle. You always hear the car but if I drive conservatively it’s definitely quiet enough to not annoy me in any way so no need for the baffle in my opinion unless you are driving for really long periods of time which would not be that fun in a miata in general
Sounds great and almost exactly like the Roadster Sport Super Street muffler on my 2019 30AE. The race one sounds maybe a little louder - but not by much. I love it! Sounds like a proper sports car now. Enjoy!
Beautiful - finally found something nice!
Best sounding axle back and light weight! Thanks for sharing this helped me make my mod mind up.
Damn. I'm pretty sure you sold me on this exhaust for my ND!
Great comparison man! I was looking for a video that compares the stock exhaust and the goodwin racing race exhaust and this video really showed the difference. I love the sound so much that I bought one for my ND RF. Thanks for the video man. Made my decision really easy on what exhaust to put on my ND RF. Keep those vids coming Ian!
Thank you so much for the feedback! That's the reason I make these videos. I'm glad you got that exhaust for you ND RF and I know you're gonna love it!
I miss my ND Miata. I made a couple vids with my Goodwin Racing exhaust back in June of 2016. Mine wasn't the race it was called something else. I love what Goodwin Racing puts out.
Everything they make is exceptional quality! I'm a huge Goodwin fan for that reason. What did you replace your ND with?
@@DriveMX5 I went from my ND back to a Mazda3, which is what I sold to get my ND. Kinda came full circle. I now own only a 1995 Miata. It's a great daily and super cheap maintenance. I have enjoyed driving it so much I realized I don't need anything else, and it's saving me a ton of money.
This is the video that made me choose GWR. Thank you!
Great choice and thank you for watching!
I’m really happy you made this video I was super impressed by the exhaust. This one sounds the best by far and you made my decision for me. Great video and nice 30th edition I got a 17 grand touring nd1 so mine doesn’t rev as high as yours does. I like mine too much to get the second generation lol I’ve got red with tan interior love it
what a great flyby sound!!! congrats:D next video with headers, cat and midpipe?:P
One day in the future!
Farout that really does sound good 👍
Deep exhaust is what i like for nd, heard so much of high pitch loud note here in georgia
30AE owner too, I've been debating on which exhaust to get. This one sounds very good.
I've got the GWR Super street Single tip and am very happy with it. Sounds really nice. I am thinking of adding the mid pipe to get a more throaty sound (but not decided yet)
@@cyrusnanavati thanks, I actually got superQ since I'm not good with noises, just installed yesterday. Your feedback was very helpful to me!
Nice comparison, thanks.
Is the racing model too loud for you as a daily and on a soft top? I'm debating between GWRs three mufflers.
Thank you for the feedback! The racing model is not too loud at all. It's very mild while cruising, really just fades into the background or gets drowned out if I turn my music up. Only thing I was different was the exhaust tip, but that's a cheap and easy fix.
Are you planning on doing other mods to the exhaust?
@@DriveMX5 For now I'm thinking muffler only...but you know how modding goes 😉
@@anthonyrystad Haha I know exactly what you mean! The race muffler will be perfect for you
@@DriveMX5 I already drive without music a lot, especially since music in the car naturally sounds more meh when mixed in with a lot of wind noise (which a lot of cars have, which I'm a bit sensitive to since it feels... off when listening). I honestly maybe should consider such an exhaust since I might as well enjoy my beautiful car engine sounds while driving in silence...
Nice video - thanks man!
Thank you, you're welcome!
1:30 dang you heard that whistle. Sounded beautiful
Thank you! I'm incredibly happy with it
i think the whistle is actually a defect in the muffler on nd2 which they fixed recently
lovely
Does it interfere with the Curt receiver hitch for the Miata? I pull a small kayak trailer and I know the OEM muffler allows the hitch.
If the OEM muffler allow it then I’m sure this one will. It takes up a much smaller area
I'm gonna get this for my 2016!!!
I couldn't recommend it enough! You'll be extremely pleased with it.
I bought a 2016 with 18km on the clock (11k miles). It's a joy to drive especially with the roof down
Hi. Planning on getting this one. You mentioned the small pops and burbles, but i thought those were mainly due to ecu tuning for keeping fuel in while lifting, do you have that or is it really only due to the exhaust ?
@@jonycreed I didn’t have a tune on the car, just stock ECU and engine. I think the stock muffler either prevented or muffled the sound of pops while this one you could ever so slightly hear at times
@@DriveMX5 how long do you have it for ? They mentioned on the description since its a single walled exhaust there can be some visual "deterioration" due to heat, did you experience it or its actually fine for normal everyday driving?
@@jonycreed yeah the metal will change color a bit, but it’s not becoming damaged in any way. Had it on the car for a couple years and tens of thousands of miles, no issues
@@DriveMX5 Great, thank you
was hoping to hear some with the top closed but otherwise good vid
What model exhaust is used in this video....this is the one I want.
It’s the Race Muffler, by GoodWin Racing
Wow, the GWR Muffler sounds so much more open! How is the drone when cruising around 3k rpm?
There’s zero drone at any RPM, which is partially why I love this muffler so much!
@@DriveMX5 That's perfect. I'll be ordering one soon. It seems like there is a sale right now. I'm a completely noob when it comes to car stuff. Are there any other issues I should be wary of either mechanically or electronically when installing this?
@@BN99239 awesome! Nothing to be wary of with this. I think I have an installation video that you might want to watch as well. The bolts holding the muffler on are odd at first. Only tip I have is using some soapy water makes it easier to get the old muffler off the rubber hangers and the new one on!
What RPMS were you hitting at 1:30?? Sounds awesome
7k+. That was wringing it out to redline and then grabbing the next gear. Thank you!
Will this be compatible with ND2?
Yes, my car is ND2
I hope the BBR one I got isn't this loud, haha. It looks like you do some weird clutching all the time, what's that about?
What do you mean weird clutching?
Goodwin sounds good to me.
It's the best I've found for the Miatas! I had their system on my old NA and loved it as well, as does my roommate who just replaced his Yonaka cat-back with the roadster sport 4
Sweet sound. How many more horses?
At least 100whp haha. I'll eventually get it on a dyno
Does this exhaust crackle and pop sometimes?
Unfortunately no. Won't get cracks and pops without a tune and/or deleting a catalytic converter. The muffler just changes the sound level and tone. But you do hear some mini DSG fart type sounds when you lift the throttle sometimes lol
Does it drone on the highway?
Not at all!
@@DriveMX5 Thanks! Do your neighbors want to kill you though?
I mean it's your car and your video but why only rev to 3k rpm?
Cold start, didn’t wanna rev it too much until everything was warm. I should have done some revs to redline after driving though...
@@DriveMX5 Still a great vid
Hello, does it drone much inside?
Not at all! Hardly noticeable on the highway with music on
After having the exhaust for months now do you get any pops and bangs?
Not really, maybe some slight pops when I downshift sometimes and blip the throttle, and it has some small pops if I let off throttle but nothing major or dramatic
@@DriveMX5 i have an nc and i had my resonator deleted and it pops and crackles pretty good, im not sure if the resonator delete helps with pops and bangs but im thinking abkut getting an nd but im not sure if its worth the 20k upgrade.
@@DailyDoseofAdam1 ND is a great chassis and the ND2 engine is phenomenal. Resonator delete probably did help yours with the pops
How raspy is this? I want something loud but I don't want something that'll sound like a fart can
Not raspy at all, it's a nice mellow tone, fades into the background while cruising but you really hear it open up under full throttle. I recommend this exhaust to anyone and everyone
@@DriveMX5 yeah I got eyes on this one, superstreet version, borla and cobalt
I have this exact exhust. If you want to make it pop like a gunshot you have to bring the revs up to around 5k rpm, then let off the gas until its at around 3k rpms. Then clutch in and do a fast short throttle blip back up to 5k rpms and it will pop loud. Almost like you are revmatching but keeping the clutch in the entire time. The key to making it pop is to being the rpms above 5k, clutch in, throttle blip back to 5k rpms, then it'll pop. it works 8/10 times for me and i still have the CAT and Resenator on
Hmm, I might have to try that!
Stock header?
Yes, stock everything except the muffler.
@@DriveMX5 is it necessary to tune the car when you install the aftermarket exhaust or just remove the stock one and replace the new one?
@@Yogi17-r3t Unless you are changing the header and/or removing the catalytic converter, I wouldn't bother with tuning
Any idea how this muffler affects performance?
No clue. If I had to guess, zero to 3hp gain
Does this car come with rev matching? Or you just have to do normal downshifting techniques?
No rev matching, just blip the throttle and that usually gets it close enough. The peddles are actually well placed for heel-toe downshifting if you’re wearing a decent pair of shoes.
prefer stock honestly, too throaty and masks the intake sound.
To each their own! Personally I love being able to hear the exhaust sound on my cars, and I added an Injen cold air intake to add more induction noise. Videos on that coming soon ;)
On the contrary I think the stock is little throaty and light.
