  • What do you do when you want to preserve your leftover bait?
    Here's what I do. I vacuum seal and salt them, this way they stay preserved for up to 12 months with no problems.

    Hey just a tip for using the continuous rolls. You are sealing releasing and then you cut to size. It is easier and quicker to put it in to seal the end and while it’s sealing pick up the scissors and it means you can pull it tight and then power cut/slide though with the scissors and it’s all done around the same time the seal is complete.
    Just a little tip. I learned this when I bought 20kg of pilchard that I need to cut, cube and vacuum seal which took a few hours!

    Looks like some good bait. Very good idea about putting holes in the bucket when salting things wish I had thought of that a long time ago it gets so wet and fatty at the bottom of the bucket. Good thinkin👍🎣

    To salt whole fish, do the same thing you'd do to cook it whole: Cut it open. Cut open the cavity and pour salt directly in before packing the exterior in salt. I'd recommend not fully gutting just because non-gutted fish works better imo. Then to use it, just butterfly it and use it whole, or chunk it and use on smaller hooks.

    I’m not sure I missed this in the video, but what is the advantage of salting the fish over just vacuuming and freezing? Bonitto seems similar to the mackerel that we use as bait here in England, so this technique seems ace for helping us “down-over”. Thanks Brooke 😬

      I think it dries out of more so less deterioration over time.

    have you tested out the salt baits though do they do good for catching or if you can get fresh its better? or just the vaccum sealed frozen does better? im still experimenting with bait for trotlines. one guy i know who does good uses only fresh bait. but he also knows all the good spots hes been doing it a long time im new so learning. but ya i have frozen gizzard shad but i use fresh drum and cast net shad also. i do best on the fresh shad. but my best was from a fresh buffalo. and ya i liked baiting with the buffalo it was big so i could do 600 hooks and still had bait leftover from one fish. the gizzard shad is a lot of filleting before baiting hooks. the smaller shad i just cut into pieces though so its fast also. but still takes a lot of time to bait 600 hooks lol.

      Laughing out loud while shaking my head. As an eco-friendly alternative, after you have salted the bait and patted dry. Stuff the bait into your pockets and climb into the freezer.

    First time I have seen this done (salting). Can you reuse the salt ?

    • @shamrock241r8
      @shamrock241r8 5 лет назад +2

      Yes you can reuse it, just have the fish as dry as possible before you place it in the salt or you will have a lot of clumping when the salt dries.

    • @randomcuriosities8441
      @randomcuriosities8441 4 года назад +1

      You can reuse but it may taste a little fishy.

    • @kenniffss
      @kenniffss 3 года назад +1

      yes, over and over. works better if you have holes in the bottom of the salt bucket and put it inside a second bucket to catch the liquid. I occasionaly pour my salt out on a tarp in the sun to dry out a bit more. You can pour the liquid into your burley mixture if you are making your own.
