    I'm renovating a bedroom right along with you and I want to say thanks. The videos are a great help. I did plaster work last in 1973 when my dad and I built the interior walls of this house. Now, in 2019 I have returned home after a zillion termites had their way with some of my interior walls. After tearing them out and rebuilding the stud work and walls (this time with ground contact lumber), replacing the electrical wiring and boxes, and hanging the sheetrock, I'm in the plaster stage. Again thanks for the refresher course. A lot has changed since 1973 (including my back and muscles) and it helps to see how new materials and tools have made the job easier. Keep the videos coming.

    great videos - very helpful. I'm doing a renovation of an old schoolhouse built in 1872 and I'm really benefitting from your expert advice on drywall! I can plumb do electrical, framing, and hack finish work but I've always been pretty scared of doing drywall but I'm getting some confidence watching your videos.

    Thanks Jeff, you've helped me so much with my first reno. There is a kinesthetic understanding that comes with watching you use a knife and work the mud. it's like my body sees and understands. Then when I am on the job, the movement comes with a familiarity and I can tune in to the finer details of angle and pressure that would take so long to develop without it.
    Thank you.

    I love these videos. The best part is the close-up shots like 5:08. For someone who is a first timer and OCD, it's a life saver.
    When I started my house renovation, I chased my tail all day long to make my mudding super smooth and that was very frustrating to the point that I was losing interest in completing the project.
    Thanks for these videos once again.

    Thanks for all your great tips! I'm going through the drywall series for the second time.....it gives my shoulders a break, and you my friend, have saved me from making a lot of mistakes and a large mess. Because my shoulders were so sore, I ended up using a plastic Ziploc baggie as a piping bag to fill the gaps, i was amazed how easy and quick it was. Once they were filled, I waited a few minutes and went back with a sharp 4" and trimmed out the excess it made taping really smooth too. I found some proper concrete piping bags at HD but I liked that I didn't have extra cleanup and I only used one bag to do 1 1/2 rooms.....not really worth buying one.

    I redid an enclosed porch. Roof shingles, insulation, vapour barrier, drywall. I was stuck at this point due to the lack of knowledge with mud. One thing I noticed is that Jeff swipes the mud off the hawk 'up-side-down'. He never actually mentions this anywhere in the course that I remember. That allows him to do one smooth move from hawk to wall. I'm new to this and always scooped it up and then had to turn my hand to apply to the wall. Wish I had noticed this earlier. I assume it requires a very precise mud mixture so it doesn't fall off on the way from the hawk to the wall. Every time I watch these I learn something new.

    Thank you for doing these videos. Really great audio and you can actually see what you are doing. I wish I would have found them before we started cutting/hanging drywall. We filled gaps yesterday and have questions.
    1. My husband got carried away and started filling gaps that weren't really gaps but seams. He didn't fill the entire length and stopped halfway down the line. Will that be problematic when taping? Should we fill the line the rest of the way before taping?
    2. When we filled gaps it eliminated the gap. Does tape need to cure in the gap? How do you accomplish if gap is filled?
    3. We had a cpl rough mud areas while filling gaps. Would it be ok to sand them now, before taping to make it flatter?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Shelly, The best thing to do now is sand the joints so that they are smooth. And start taping as if nothing happened. You might find you need to use the wide joint technique on areas that were filled in prematurely. Just remember ( it is only drywall) you can always stretch a joint to conceal a bump and you can always sand the imperfections away. Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

    Great videos. I was having thoughts about getting someone in to tape and mud, until I found your video series. I just finished filling gaps with the Sheetrock 45 compound. You are right about working quickly. Almost without warning it instantly goes from being workable to being rock. Although I made only small batches, I think I ended up throwing more out than actually went on the wall. Lol.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY

      With practice this won't happen. Still cheaper than hiring someone. Besides most contractors don't fill gaps. They cheat and let it crack years down the road.

    Sorry to bombard you man I'm just trying to get my head around the progression of mud types here. - So is hot mud good to use for ALL initial taping in addition to filling gaps? In the video you filled one ceiling joint but didn't tape it....with gaps are they supposed to be filled and taped while wet or should the hot mud set first, then be taped over once it dries?

    As a beginner (as in, never done this before) the 45 min mud makes me nervous. I think to use the normal stuff if possible, even if it takes longer. The pre-made mud seems ideal.

      I understand your concern with the 45 minute mud. The reason why it works better in filling gaps vs regular mud s when it dries it's like concrete. Regular mud does get hard, after about 24 hrs, but it'll be prone to crack and not hold that well. My professional advise is Start with a small amount 1st until you get more comfortable!

    If you come to a situation where the gap is too big and you have to use mesh tape to fill the gap, do you comeback with paper tape for "regular taping"? Or do you just go back with a second coat to finish it?

    So we're (wife and I) redoing the inside of our house. We tore apart our bathroom and after putting up the sheetrock there were some gaps. I filled them using the compound with the hardener as you recommended. Not being very experience in this I had the excess mud. Can that be stored or does it have to be disposed? If disposed, what method do you recommend? Love your videos btw. We used one to build our deck.

    Great video, thank you very much, I’m a hack doing a drywall repair on a ceiling that is not square, I have one seam that has a 1/2” gap, your video will help me fill the gap, I wasn’t sure how to do it. I have the mesh tap, my gap is not a corner, it’s in middle of ceiling, I still place the tape over the gap and just fill with joint compound

    If you dont have a big drill for mixing alot of mud at once can you use a regular drill and still mix half a bucket at a time

    Do you use internal and external metal/plastic corners? Fibreglass tape goes on first. lol It's not going to stick otherwise. You already know that.

    Hi Jeff, Absolutely love your videos. I'm installing a drop ceiling in my garage. Should I do the ceiling first if plan on finishing the walls with drywall?

    Thanks for your videos. I have a question. Do you use Sheetrock 45 on your taped joints or just patch work? If not what type do you use on tape joints? Thanks for your time and answering in advance.

    Hey Jeff your videos are helping me greatly I learn something new every time I watch u doing something... but I bought sheetrock 90 instead of 45 and all purpose mud instead of machine mud and in this pandemic it's hard to do returns I also bought metal corners for my bulkheads is that okay ?

    Do you use the sheetrock45 to fill all inside corner beads, midwall bevel spots where the sheets of drywall meet and where the wall and ceiling meet before mudding and taping?

    • @22shroomster
      @22shroomster 5 лет назад

      It's always a good idea to pre fill all the butt joints and flats, aka bevels, before you start taping. Make sure you "v" out the butt joints with a utility nice to get rid of loose paper. You'll get conflicting advise but that's what I do. I only use that to put corner bead on when I need to apply and coat the bead the same day.

    Can you extend the pot life of 45 minute mud or do you just mix what you can use in 45 minutes?
