When reviewing Kup figures, you have to ask yourself “does this figure feel as if he wants to offline himself whenever in the presence of Hot Rod?”. If the answer is no, you have failed at Kup.
Kup is one transformer in my collection that I’m really stubborn about. I only have the G1 version, and I think that he can fit best into generations, since Kup strikes me as so old, he was physically built different.
I feel like if you don't have Legends Kup, then the SS86/Buzzworthy one is a decent stopgap if you absolutely, positively want a modern version of the character that looks like the cartoon art.
Watching this video made me realize just how lucky I am to own Generations Sergeant Kup. Such a fantastic reimagining of the ol' clunker, with a proper truck mode, genius storage for his rifle in both modes, awesome articulation and a fun transformation. Truly an all-timer of an old-timer. And alas, even though he didn't come out on top, second place still isn't bad. Cheers, Legends Kup, you absolute mad lad. And cheers to you too, Gavin! Got G1 Kup last Summer, and I love him. Always wanted one but never really went in on it because he looks awful. Then I got one and a half for free in a big bag of old toys!
Sincerely I preferred the transparent windshield with the silver detailing underneath, the buzzworthy retool/repaint feels too much like trying to emulate the cut corners of the cartoon rather than the general feel of the animated model. I concur on the transformation not being too fun.
I love Kup as a Character, while the transformation is not very fun like Rhinox any version of the character is a must for me. I always seem to like the adult somewhat mentor characters in Transformers, such as Tigatron, Rhinox, Kup, Vector Prime etc. And wish they got more recognition a developed characters
I think with wise or mentor-type characters part of the appeal, at least for me, is that they don't have a lot of developing left to do if that makes sense? I like Rhinox and Tigatron as well, but I think they're so compelling because they're more sure of themselves. Rhinox is the rock of the team and Tigatron knows what he's about and will put his foot down when he's not happy. You're right about the lack of recognition cause people seem to gloss over a lot of their big character beats when they talk about Beast Wars, and the moments where they do get a bit shook up.

You don't need to watch them grow as characters as much as others because they already are developed characters with their own unique motivations and flaws that strongly influence them, they've been around the ole memory block. Something thats always sad for me to hear is when someones favorite character is "Bumblebee" specifically the movie ones, where hes not much of a character at all but more of a window into the transformers universe.

I really like how Generations and Prime gave Kup an Earth mode. The 1986 space-cars are good, they're iconic, but they're not robots *in disguise* and that always bothered me slightly about the movie cast. If the next line after Legacy gives Earth modes to guys that have only ever had Cybertronian modes, I'll be all over that. And now to contradict myself: I have the Titans Return version of Kup which I prefer over Legends for his IDW-ness, and it's an absolutely brilliant mold. An absolutely deserved top spot.
I like Titan Returns cup for being able to fit both cannons on the back with 2 titan masters stood on there manning them. It also fits perfectly in the gap in TR Overlord's base mode and is just a great combo.
I found a cheap Botcon Electro once so I was rooting for his mold mate Sergeant Kup. Something about that truck mode is so fun, I’m glad you even mentioned the gun/exhaust pipe, it’s an incredible detail

I've got the Studio Series Kup and the "United" battle-scarred Kup that came in an Autobot 3-Pack, and I like 'em both, but I just wish they'd done the Studio Series one in his G1 toy colours. Why isn't Hasbro doing more of the G1 toy colour schemes ON their G1-inspired toys? Those paint jobs were great! Certainly better than the cheapened, washed-out cartoon looks (not that I'm BITTER).
A cool multi review. Sergeant Kup reminds me of the patriarch in Yellowstone. He's pushing 90 but he still has hay bales to haul out to the back 40. Buzzworthy/Studio Series Kup is fine. No hate, if you don't have one and you need a Kup you could do worse. Mine is riding a Sharkticon. It is one of the Jack Spaadrow type tall tales. Long story short Kup now rules the seas including Gnaw, Rippersnapper, and Energon Sharkticon.
Headmaster, Targetmaster, A fun transformation and a great robot and truck mode...Got to love love Legends Kup. A great toy thats fun on so many levels.
I bought the iGear replacement head (which comes in cygar & no cygar versions) for Sargeant Kup years ago and I keep forgetting that it's _not_ his original head.
I feel like the Titan Master Kup is undermined by the fact he can lose his head, but then again, if he can lose his limbs, why not his head? And it was sheer luck in that fourth season as to whether your new Nebulan buddy became your gun or your head, so that really could have been Kup. Love the way both mini-bots integrate into the vehicle mode - turns the whole thing into an action scene waiting to happen.
I love the titans return/legends mold. I've never really been the biggest kup fan, so the hasbro version is my preferred one. I like the brighter colors and the headsculpt. it makes him look like a younger version of himself, before he becomes the battle hardened veteran he's more recognized as.
If you loved Sargent Kup in this video he is being sold off in droves now that people have the SS86 and Buzzworth Kups. Totally worth the $10-15 he's being sold at. Kup's a character I can really justify having multiple different toys of in my collection, they're so enjoyable and different in design and feel that I'll keep like 3 of them around at all times.
Prime Kup looks like how a Kup in his prime years (that wasn't meant as a pun; I didn't even realize the word-play until I typed it); if that was the concept they were going for, then I say they NAILED it. But it's not the grizzled "old-timer" we know and love, so it's fair he doesn't win this competition.
Great video, Gavin! As far as I’m concerned, the SS86 Kup wins hands down for me. It’s the only mainline G1 Kup I have since I don’t have Titans Return Kup and the OG Generations Kup. I think for me, SS86 wins because his transformation is very intuitive and I love how cartoon accurate he is. Articulation is top notch for me and the way Hasbro added the limb removal gimmick is pretty cool. That is what I label as extra play value. The face sculpt I don’t mind since he’s supposed to be a grumpy pants anyway, so yeah I’m fine with the face sculpt. But that’s just my personal opinion, to each their own.

I actually considered buying a studio series Kup on the weekend. But I decided to pass because I've yet to see any reviewer give it anything more then a "eh, its okay". Which for $30, doesn't sound worth it.
The Legends one is ok, but I feel the exact opposite about his headsculpt. Granted, I think his expression is a bit weird for the SS86/Buzzworthy one, but it looks like him. The Legends one... I mean, it doesn't not look like him, but it's so stretched out and puffy, like he has coke bloat or something. Maybe it's just cuz it looks bigger on camera and in pictures, maybe if I saw it in person, I'd be more satisfied.
So, I've been wondering, how long does each TRDQ episode (or the standard short ones at least) take to produce? They're not long, but I know how deceptively labour-intensive video production can be. There's (if you'll indulge an obvious reference) more than meets the eye to even such short videos, you have the main camera shots, but there's also b-roll footage, still images spliced in where necessary, I imagine the voice-over requires at least a handful of takes, the script writing, not to mention research and so forth. So if it's not too much of a trade secret, how long does each video take? (or how long does it take repugnus, we all know you make him do all the boring stuff)
Heya - a normal video usually takes a about an hour to script and do the voiceover, make the thumbnail etc. The filming and editing process is maybe 90 minutes. It really depends on the subject. A video like this maybe took another hour on top. Some things like the Brawn video can get done in 1-2hrs

Generations has the best alt mode imo, but the Legends robot mode looks really slick.
Also you should try adding some paint to the little guy, there's so much great sculpted detail crying to be picked out

I still think Buzzworthy Kup is the best classic Kup we can get. Headsculpt is over done yeah but it is fine.
