When John sings, if you listen closely, he has a weird secondary raspy overtone to his voice. It sounds like there's a tiny ghost with a raspy voice inside his mouth singing off key along with him.
Yeah! It's like they've got his voice going through a harmonizer effect or something, because nobody else is singing during those points. I wondered if anyone else was hearing that too!
